Posted @withregram • @nikijabbour One of the questions I’m asked the most is how much help do I have in my garden. Honestly, besides the annual lugging of wheelbarrows of compost or manure to the garden, 98% of it is me and just me. There’s family help if I ask of course, but growing in raised beds with permanent pathways really cuts down on the work. Plus, I pull weeds as soon as I spot them so they don’t go to seed in my beds. At this point in late spring, my biggest chore is watering and I’m watering for about 20 min a day. I have 20 raised garden beds, a dozen planted straw bales, a 14 by 24 foot greenhouse and a large collection of assorted food and flower containers. I spend about 30-60 min in the garden every day but a lot of that is sitting and enjoying the space. I know I could do more - build that new compost bin I’ve been wanting, tackle an ornamental bed that needs TLC, and build a few more trellises but I’ve been busy with writing and life in general so I don’t feel pressure to always be working. Wenn im Betrieb von Peter im Spätsommer die Hochphase der #Ernte anläuft, arbeiten bis zu 800 Menschen auf seinem #Gurkenhof. Viele von ihnen kommen als #Saisonarbeiter aus Polen und Rumänien - der #Landwirt spricht mit ihnen in ihrer jeweiligen #Muttersprache, das ist für ihn eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Er begann mit Polnisch. Das lernte er von seinen ersten Mitarbeitern. Mein Traum war schon immer, einen großen landwirtschaftlichen Betrieb aufzubauen und zu leiten. Dazu gehört auch, dass ich mit meinen Mitarbeitern in ihrer Sprache kommuniziere, sagt er. Der ehemalige Mathematik- und Geografielehrer beendete mit 40 Jahren seine Schullaufbahn, um im #Spreewald einen Gurkenhof zu gründen. Auf seinen Feldern werden fast ausschließlich #Einlegegurken angebaut und mit dem sogenanannten #Gurkenflieger geerntet. Die Einlegegurke gehört zur botanischen Familie der Kürbisgewächse, die man botanisch Cucurbitaceae nennt. Sie ist eine Variation der Salatgurke. Einlegegurken werden in #Deutschland fast ausschließlich im #Freiland kultiviert. Die Haupterntezeit ist von Mitte August bis Mitte September, wenn die ersten #Gurken eine Länge von 9 cm erreicht haben. Bei früher Aussaat im Gewächshaus sind die Gurken schon ab Ende Mai reif. 2018/19 verbrauchte jeder Bundesbürger im Durschnitt 6,6 kg Gurken. In Deutschland wurden 2019 auf 2306 ha 249.916 t Gurken geerntet. 73% davon waren Einlegegurken aus dem Freiland wie bei Peters Gurkenhof. Er ist einer von 305 Betriebe, der Gurken auf diese Weise kultiviert. „Ich habe den Wechsel des Arbeitsplatzes nie bereut“, sagt der zahlenaffine ehemalige Mathematik-Pädagoge. Heute arbeiten zu Hochzeiten mehr als 800 Menschen auf dem Betrieb. „Mit jedem mache ich am Ende persönlich die Abrechnung. Das ist für mich ein überaus wichtiges Zeichen der Wertschätzung. 🙏🏻RESPECT🙏🏻 Being an only child to my parents, I have always been the apple of their eyes. While they pampered me for every right thing, they also empowered me to be an individual and achieve my dreams on my own, without interfering in the process of how I was trying to achieve. This not only helped me develop leadership qualities, but made me understand how important it is to empower people and how vital it is to make them feel respected for whatever personality they are. If you interfere in their natural process of growth, you are disrespecting them somehow. They may not always tell you but will feel it. This law will apply to not just humans but every life that exists. We must learn to respect the life forms around us because they don’t live to enjoy life, they do it for mere survival. It costs nothing to be kind, instead all it will get you is blessings and an unimaginable amount of love in various forms. Your respect for #MotherEarth and its children don’t need to be on a high scale, your tiniest acts like leaving food grains and water bowls for hungry & thirsty birds, playing with stray animals and feeding them with love, watering plants and adding manure to its soil etc. They might not be able to thank you in verbal language but their positive wavelength will reach you somehow, trust me IT WILL!!! We had been planning a rooftop garden for @rosellasushi for a good while, especially after working with @joelorsini in Dallas. Covid showed us just how important it was to move forward with a concept based around not just sustainable fish, but a sustainable business concept that includes eliminating waste and growing as much of our own product as possible. It’s a young garden but she is a real beaut and pumping out more herbs and veggies than we could have hoped for. Through an entrepreneur program, Boise refugees like Safiya grow and sell a variety of produce. 🥬⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Idaho Office for Refugees oversees the program, which offers refugees the chance to practice both English and business skills. 😊⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Abdi was born in Somalia, but spent most of her youth in Kenyan refugee camps. Now, she runs one of the most profitable CSAs in the program, in addition to selling produce at Boise’s Capitol City Public Market.
