Maccarone Time Capsule from Coming To Power (2016) featuring the artist Carolee Schneeman. With our @grimes and @deliabrown exhibitions launching last week, we wanted to focus on Coming To Power to highlight the fierce work of feminist creators. Coming To Power was originally curated in 1993 by Ellen Cantor at David Zwirner Gallery. It reflected the bold voices and urgency of iconic female artistry from the 60’s & 70’s, pop and porn of the 80’s, and collided with early 90’s sex positive, queer, BDSM, and sex radicals of performance and video art culture. These images are from Carolee Schneeman’s Eye Body: 36 Transformative Actions for Camera (1963). Right now we are in a time of Jewish grief and also a time of sweetness as we usher in the new year. I’d like to add a little to this sweetness by sharing this story from @finding_sappho. This beautiful two are Felice Schragenheim (1922–1945) and Elisabeth (Lilly) Wust (1913–2006). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the early 1940s Lilly was living in Berlin with four children while her husband was away fighting. Her housekeeper introduced her to Felice, who was not only Jewish, but a member of the German Resistance. The two women fell head over heels in love, with Felice visiting Lilly every day, always with flowers and poetry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Lilly separated from her husband in 1942 and Felice moved in. They lived together happily for only two years. In 1944 Felice was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp. Lilly tried desperately to visit her, but was refused entry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On 9 October 1944, Felice was sentenced to death and transported to Auschwitz. She probably died on 31 December 1944. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The two leave behind a load of photos and love letters, sealed with lipstick kisses. They also left marriage contracts, signed in 1943. Felice’s is composed of ten promises, beginning with “I will always love you.” You can find these at the Jewish Museum in Berlin. After the death of Felice, Lilly went on to house more Jewish women, protecting them from the Gestapo. She managed to do this even though she was under close watch, having to sign in to the local police every two days. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Lilly hid Lucie Friedländer, Katja Lazerstein, and Dr. Rosa Ohlendorf in her home, all three surviving the war. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Lilly was declared Righteous Among the Nations on 31 August 1995 by Yad Vashem. - @adameli on Instagram

Yesterday my family and I received the devastating news that my papi (as we affectionately called him) suddenly passed away back in Nicaragua. He was my Mami’s great love. My mom, tio and tia’s dad and mine, Ramiro and my cousin’s grandpa. It’s heartbreaking that we can’t be there as a family to lay him to rest because of the pandemic but I hope our love for him shines through. He left us with the fondest memories. Ramirito was a total character! He gave each one of us kids crazy nicknames. Mine was purrucu parra (LOL it makes no sense but it was perfect). He used to love playing pranks on us, too. His favorite thing to do to me, specifically, was pull my ear. As a little girl I always hated it but I really miss it now...More than ever. He was an avid baseball fan and we all inherited that from him. All the boys in our family played it growing up. Cooper will too! He loved raising and riding horses. He owned many on the farm throughout his life. He taught each of us how to ride a horse. He loved music which we all also inherited. He always loved a good mariachi ballad but he also enjoyed the opera music my cousin would serenade him with. He always loved a good drink and a nice rocking chair chat. He was a master card player and beat us often. The list goes on and on. He left this earth with a big hole, but his legacy lives on and we are thankful God lent him to us. Appreciate everyone’s prayers during this time and thank you for those thinking of us. Rest In Peace, Papi and I hope you are rejoicing reunited with my Mami. I’m accepting this challenge, with a bit of a caveat. • I work in a predominantly cishet white male world that is deeply rooted in Americana - all sorts of old fashioned values are upheld heavily and unfairly. To be honest I feel like screaming most days. • For one, I am constantly conscious of my femininity and the ways that I am given different treatment solely based on my gender identity. It affects how I am perceived in terms of competence and knowledge, and how seriously I am taken in the workplace. Look, I’m working where I am because I’m damn good with boots, not because I’m eye candy OR MY BOSSES’ GIRLFRIEND (yes I have been asked this). I’m too often sexualized with no invitation - it’s rattling to realize that to some, femininity is often inseparable with sexuality. • My experiences with the entanglement of femininity and sexualization may not seem like a big deal, but it’s a part of a systemic problem. At a base level, there are so many ways in which human beings are still being prosecuted for being who they are. There is a lot of violence that stems from the sexualization of women. This black and white challenge even originated as a way to bring attention to domestic violence in Turkey. I live in a country where Native and Black trans women are murdered at an alarming rate. We have a lot of problems with violence in the world, and we’re all stretched thin right now, but it is all extremely important. • It is often challenging and uncomfortable being in a space where you have to build your own turf. Even being half white and cishet I’ve had to work extremely hard to prove myself and carve out a space to have a voice - and it’s a lot harder and less friendly for those who don’t have the same privileges I do. • The one thing that keeps me going is the support of all the people who also have to push to break the mold. To all the women, LBGTQ+ and BIPOC individuals around me who are pushing - thank you. It’s an exhausting and tough time but by supporting each other we will keep going💪💪 • I know I didn’t quite do it right but thank you to beautiful beings @scratchsniffpurr and @allsystems.jo for nominating me ❤️❤️ - @shungacowgirl on Instagram

Weve been sharing family stories and today we have a beautiful one by author Nikki Darling. Come back tomorrow for Part 2 and watch our First Friday Instagram Live 10/2 at 12:30 PT with Nikki.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ In the early morning of August 4th, as the Sturgeon moon receded into the pale sky, its navy star spotted pigment fading, my Scorpio grandmother, muse and Godmother left her earthly body. I knew she was a bruja, but a witch who also believed in Jesus. She was devotedly Catholic in that way I wish I could be, she reveled in the Gothic nature of it, making art from bottlecaps, ribbons, magazine cutouts, collages from cigarette ads and the leafy pages of the bible. When I was in Spain I wrote her name on a piece of paper in one of the oldest churches in the gothic square and dropped it in the prayer box. She had an airstream trailer behind her farmhouse where she would patch quilts together with old sweaters and found fabric, we often joked she invented photo shop because she would cut her face out of pictures she did not like and replace it with another photo of herself that she did. She tie dyed and cut, painted and sculpted endlessly decorating empty jars and containers. It was not unusual to receive a Quaker Oats box with ribbon ensconced and hotglued in some geometric pattern, homemade cassettes of her and her mariachi band, also consisting of my grandfather, stuffed inside. Some might envision the typical arts and crafts a grandmother might make, but this wasnt that. My grandmother was an artist. Her work was not cutesy, she followed an inner voice and logic only she could see. When spray paint became available in stores she started buying it in bulk and using it to spray paint not only her studio, but her canvas as well, never having heard or seen graffiti. She lived a rural life punctuated by visits to New Mexicos larger cities, setting up her wares in Las Vegas, Sante Fe, Albuquerque and Taos. Her work today might be called outsider art, and I suppose it was. It was wild, there is no real way to describe, only to say, she had it. My mother and sister often joked when we would visit modern art museums, That looks like something grandma would have made. - @picturingmexicanamerica on Instagram

Me and Dad at @griessmuehle - In the Cosmic Hole - before starting the last Oscillator night in 2017. I’m wearing his original Typhoon club t-shirt from 80s, and he was very proud! Anyway, he partied for 16hours and I left before him cause I was tired and I am probably a grandma more than he is 💥 I went back to the club in the morning with a coffee in my hand and he was still there.. in the garden putting wood in the fire with a bunch of Australian kids.. they were communicating with google translate, my dad speaks just Italian, and he was answering in my home-town local dialect - Hilarious! They were having so much fun BUT I felt very embarrassed and wanted him to leave the club. After 3 years, looking at this pic, I can finally see how special this night was and I’d never forget that! Seeing him walking around the club where I have mostly of my beautiful memories since when I moved to Berlin was emotional. There are so many things about our parents that make us feel uncomfortable but we should just accept them for what they are and this is what I learn after having my dad to every single gig I had in Berlin for the following months, standing next to the DJ booth for hours, protecting his daughter like if she was still ten years old and behaving like he was still a 20 years old party-boy 😁❤️ - @vale_budino on Instagram

This week I want to share the work of Jacqueline Ayer: textile designer, entrepreneur, and picture book maker. The daughter of first-generation Jamaican immigrants, she was born in NYC in 1930 and went on to have a flourishing career that took her to Thailand, Hong Kong and London, where she eventually settled with her two daughters. I first encountered one of Ayer’s books in its original format published in the 60s from @pvdath and the economical use of shape and line felt wonderfully timeless. Her work stayed on my mind, and I shared them with my publisher @enchantedlion. Ayer passed away in 2012, but two of her picture books are now re-printed by @enchantedlion with her line work & colors as fresh as ever ~ here are my favorites from Nu Dang and his Kite. A veces me detengo a pensar cómo quiero seguir, esos “a veces” son cada vez más diarios. Esta foto me gusta porque hace mucho no tocaba y me sentía bien, el último año tocar fue difícil, me costaba conectar conmigo y con la parte de disfrutar, muchas veces porque llegaba con poco encuentro con mis canciones (encontrarse lleva tiempo) o porque me ponía a pensar qué pensaban quienes estaban escuchando. El miércoles pasado en esa situación tan bizarra de tocar sola en casa cantándole al aire, me sentí bien después de mucho tiempo. Le mande un mensaje a una amiga que decía textual: “Me siento tan bien ! Estoy logrando ser honesta conmigo me costó mucho pero acá estoy”. Hoy siendo honesta me reconozco trabajando muchísimo para mi música todos los días, y por fin estoy viéndome. Siento hoy, que esa es la real recompensa: verme desde muchos ángulos. Really enjoying this essay by Susan Sontag from 1966 called “Against Interpretation”. As far as I understand, Sontag is critical of the approach to art as an object for immediate interpretation- you know, we tend to approach a work of art as something that is ready to interpret and extract content from, even before we had the chance to experience it. By focusing on uncovering it’s “true” content hidden behind a form or a style we miss out on experiencing the piece in it self. To me her point becomes the clearest when I think of film and how form choices and photography make such a difference to the experience of the movie, even to the degree that the story line becomes secondary. My mom passed away last night. It was too soon. With an addict parent you always hope for a miracle. You always hope there will be a change. You always dream for a healthy relationship. Unfortunately she lost her battle with addiction and we weren’t able to have those things. I am so heartbroken and I am also so glad she is not suffering any longer. I love my mom deeply. She made me who I am: strong, big hearted, empathic, spiritual and a good cook. I will miss her and all the amazing memories we do have. She taught me so much. This one’s for all the black and brown junior and leaving cert students who are going to have to accept final results from their white teachers who may have never truly seen them. Since there’s no public examinations, teachers will be deciding on a final grade for their students. This is terrifying to me and I’m sending y’all love and support. I’ve had teachers give me lower marks than white students who COPIED MY WORK, punish me unfairly over other students and isolate me in their classrooms, one guy never allowed me to sit beside anybody and would painstakingly look through every line of my maths homework, find a mistake and humiliate me in front of the other students. I also had teachers who believed in me and encouraged me - so I know it’s possible to do this! I chose to study astrophysics in college because I think the universe is dope and I always wanted to understand the physics that describes it. But I also chose astrophysics so nobody could ever tell me that I was stupid, or lazy, or a troublemaker. As if I had to prove my worth in the world via western institutions! As a teacher in uni now, I have the privilege of teaching in classrooms that are really diverse. Sadly what I’ve learned from my students is that discrimination in the classroom is the exact same as when I was in school. In some cases it’s actually worse. I’m fittin to start my own school. Where we teach students the work of African writers, inventors, musicians, physicists, astronomers, zoologists, botanists and philosophers. There is so much to learn from the great thinkers of Africa and the African Diaspora. It would be a shame to deprive our kids of that wealth of knowledge. This school would be welcome to everyone, because in my opinion, we have ALL been deprived of a globally complete education, not just black ppl. Loves!! Have I told you about the first course I ever created? Urban Sādhana.

Three years later it’s still my favorite course!

I created it because I felt that typical yoga classes focused overly on asana and, aside from doing a teacher training, there was nowhere for students to learn more about yoga. I do have to say Urban Sādhana was ahead of its time as breathwork (prāṇāyāma) and other core principles of yoga have been trending lately.

Since then nearly 100 students have taken my course! From newbie meditators to experienced teachers it has been an honor to fill in the gaps left by mainstream yoga and help build a home practice. 

I love Urban Sādhana because it has the ability to start people on their journey of spiritual growth. It’s transformational not only because of the content and the support of the group but also because of the secret behind-the-scenes stuff I do in my daily energy and meditation practice.   I am jazzed to announce that I am offering Urban Sādhana as a purely online program!

“Three-headed victim” 30 x 40” Charcoal over stonehenge paper This drawing is my personal favorite from the series of self-portraits as a victim, i also think it’s the best one of the series. Like in a critical “art talk” sort of way, i think it’s superior to all the other drawings of the series. Why? Not sure, but i will tell you some things i like about it. Whether or not those things make the drawing “good”? Fucked if i know. . I like the upside down triangle of heads, i enjoy a lot how each head has different sorts of treatment (btw i fucking hate the upper left head, although i tolerate it as part of the whole) I like that i was able to get three heads in and have them not look disjointed from the “main” body I like the nipple of the left breast (which you won’t see on instagram) and the skin of the nipple changing into “regular” skin, pretty proud of that The hand on the stomach just barely sinking into the skin from the fingertips. The insinuation of joints and nails, they’re barely there irl, but just enough to be very clear . She’s a crookedly stacked totem, and i sure do love that centered sort of composition . It’s been months that I’ve been working in @e.l.i_project You might’ve noticed it from some of my stories. I couldn’t imagine that my mind and heart would be taken away for a project in these uncertain times. It’s been very challenging and I’ve been in all the stages possible emotionally 😅 Having responsibility for over 48 people it’s scary. But I’ve been learning and achieving things I wouldn’t imagine I could in such a short period of time. A documentary film to help @earthleagueint to draw awareness to the illegal trade of endangered species and the impact of human encroachment on their environment in order to foster protection of wildlife and ecosystems against exploitation and crime. I can’t be more honor to be part of this as a producer, writer and actress. This is my favorite project since the beginning of my career for many reasons but more than anything for the important message that it’ll send to the world. I’ve missed it if I’m to be honest. It’s one of the most comforting feelings for me and for him.
