My first born is fifteen today. I don’t have words to express what an honor it is to get to be this young man’s mom. From the beginning, I have known he was set apart — that there was a plan for his life that went beyond what I could imagine. I have felt a responsibility to steward this time with him the best I can. I can’t believe it’s already been so long. And that I really don’t have that many years left with him in my house. He is strong, wise, kind, curious, courageous and powerful. This past year has been a massive one for growth. It is a beautiful thing to see a boy become a man. I get a front seat to one of the best “becomings” to watch. Ever. I prayed so much for God to give me what this baby boy’s name should be. What God had for him and to declare over him? (I have a hard time deciding what kind of ice cream I want when there are 20 choices so naming a child was super stressful.) The name I couldn’t shake was Alexander— defender/protector of mankind. It has absolutely been the name for him. And is what I continue to pray over him as he steps more and more into what that looks like as the man he is becoming. This momma is full of joy and celebration today. He is one of the greatest delights in my life. Loving him has, and continues to, grow me up. It is an honor to celebrate his life today. I loved my little girl @camilamariaconcepcion so much ♥️Camila was the first girl to call me “mama,” a responsibility I did not take it lightly. I haven’t been able to acknowledge her passing publicly for 10 days because I have been so devastated. Her death feels like a colossal loss for the whole world. Camila was brilliant — words flew through her like sacred magic, she had the sharpest self-deprecating humor, and her exuberant light was blinding. Here are some of my favorite photos of her: on set for writing an episode of Netflix’s Gentefied, hanging with my mom and my sisters on my birthday last year, her altar at home, + I’m posting some of her brilliant writing (from our text threads) in my stories... A lot of booksellers grew up with books, but I think my childhood was a little unique. My mom would take my sister and I to our local bookstore every weekend to pick out a book. When I was 9 years old, in 2003, we noticed that we owned all the books in the store. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My mom discovered that Once Upon A Time was going out of business and the founder, Jane Humphrey, was going to retire. I decided to write a letter to our local newspaper asking if someone would save the bookstore so I would be able to find the fifth Harry Potter book. The paper published my letter and the bookstore got a lot of attention, but no buyers. So Jane approached my family, and my parents put in a bid. A few days later we were all screaming with excitement as the proud new owners of Once Upon A Time! Since then I have grown in the bookstore and am now the manager after 16 years on the job. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I still get joy every day by walking in and discovering something new. It is a magical experience to live and work so closely with books for so many years. I’ve got a new woman crush today and her name is Megan! 😍 I’m only 3 days in and now I know exactly what all the hype was all about with these BOD ropes and 🔥burning fat left and right. This week has been no joke with these HOME workouts and I’m not wasting any time, money or energy going anywhere else to get a 35 minute strength/cardio workout. The visual and listening cues are on point and I’m able to focus and hone in on specific muscle groups while self-correcting and lifting smarter when I hear and see her crew also doing their work at home. The fact that I’m getting these short 💦workouts in a 5 am helps me stay focused and 💥ENERGIZED for the entire day while I’m also burning fat as I’m 😴 sleeping. “True LOVE is truly understanding YOURSELF!” I wrote this on my board as I wrapped up today because I know what happens behind closed doors and when I’m all by myself...it’s all about INTEGRITY and what I do with my time that allows me to improve in all areas of my life. Hi everyone! Just felt like writing with some little life updates 3 As of today, Im 25 weeks pregnant! Unbelievable. Cant believe how fast this whole thing has gone :o Baby Blue is getting bigger and stronger by the day - not messing around at all with these kicks! Im in PT now for some gnarly pregnancy-related hip pain. But dont worry. My wife is taking great care of me :) I think were both enjoying the process so far, and we sure love seeing our baby grow.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Alex and I have been trying to take extra good care of our bodies and spirits these days. Lots of cooking, lots of yoga, getting excited for lots of walking as the weather cools down. Ive been trying to continue to limit my time on social media, which is absolutely necessary for my health and well-being - trying to schedule posts as often as possible, and desperately trying not to start my day with screens because I know if I start the day that way, its how I spend the whole day. Today’s my sister’s 44th bday. She lives in London with her husband and 3 kids and we usually spend her bdays together. I wish I could see her today and make her uncomfortable because she is definitely not a hugger like me. In fact we are pretty much opposites. Her eyes are 5 times bigger than mine and her overall knowledge of science, nutrition and numbers is also much better than mine. I’ve always thought of her as the brains AND the beauty of our family. I think of her as she looks in this picture. I tend to be EXTREMELY hard on myself.. Today I had a huge epiphany and realized that my life is very similar to my plants... Let me explain 🌱🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ Every morning I go outside early af to water them. I trim the dead off/prune them. I take care of them like they’re my babies. I was soooo upset when the groundhog ate my only watermelon growing. When my zucchini & summer squash had mosaic virus (it’s not harmful to hoomans) Or when I only had 1 zucchini growing (the other died..) and only 2 summer squash.. But you know what! I grew my own food on my first try. Today I saw my tomatoes are getting bigger and turning red. I have a shit ton of peppers growing plus my jalepeños are FINALLY growing... they took awhile and I had to replant them 74945 times. I have another zucchini growing and a ton of summer squash 😍 I realized allllll of my hard work is paying off even though it didn’t seem like it at first. When everything felt like it wasn’t working for me, I felt like giving up. Who tf am I to grow things. I kill succulents bc I succ 🤦🏻‍♀️😩 Having the realization that everything I want is coming to me so much easier now I feel so happy. My business is building where I want it to be. My body is getting where I want it to. My mindset guys! WHEW. My mindset has been so much better this year. Patience & gratitude has been a reoccurring sign for me and today I really feel it. I’m grateful for all of my hard work in everything I do and it’s building a solid foundation for what I desire. When Mom was first diagnosed with Lung Cancer, I was blocking the feelings around life, sort of spiritually bypassing if you will, the really real feelings of saddness, anger and fear of the unknown all hiding under the rainbows, butterflies, LSD and sunshine. Day-to-day Mom had her struggles (chemo, radiation, lung removal), & I still went about my days fully believing she was okay and everything was fine. Miracles were happening-that I trusted... About a year ago, I woke up to my saddness around Moms health and healing, I started to feel so lost & about 6 months ago Mom found out she has an inoperable brain tumor. My world froze in this fear of losing my mom, of her being sick and her battle... awareness was hard. My dad had to quit working to care for Mom. Behind the smiles, I worried so much. During this time: In August I moved into an amazing home with Adam, & we have had such a hard journey; I felt safe to Express these hard emotions, the fear was overwhelming... and it created so much attachment drama in my life. I could not spiritually bypass depression, saddness & fear. I was angry & scared. Felt frozen. Mom had developed DM (an illness from immunotherapy drugs she took), and is (still) fighting to survive. Had blood transfusions & she is down to 90lbs... I went home to visit. For two weeks I supported my family as a caregiver, nanny, a friend, a sister and a Daughter. arriving back in LA today, I realize most of my fear was simply based on not knowing the unknown- yup, zero control. Life happens FOR you, not TO you... miracles happen, maturity happens, life happens & it is invaluable having friends and a partner in the hardest moments of life. Thank You life, Gratitude🌻 . How are you all going? 🦋 Hanging in there? I just happened to do two things before lockdown started that I’m SOOOO grateful for now, and they are: 1) cut all my hair off, and 2) re-start medication for my mental health. I’ve been lucky enough to access medication three times over the years and in each instance I genuinely believe this intervention saved my life. Somedays it’s enough just to survive, but other days I’m seeing a glimpse of who I used to be again and it’s... nice?? As Kendra has written in one of her daily lockdown reports, “I am feeling annoyed at some parts but at others I am feeling good.” We’ve been playing dress ups, walking everyday and baking (pictured is the successful experimental upside down caramelised fig and apple cake!). I deep cleaned my oven. It took 3 days and I had to vacuum it first 😳 my days and nights are filled to the brim with the work of homeschooling Kendra, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and caring for our baby. Last night I picked up my guitar for the first time since March and recorded a cover song dedication for a friend, and surprised myself with this “hopeful” feeling, that maybe I can carve out some more time for music in the evenings, even if it means getting 4 hours sleep that night. I try to keep my socials generally upbeat but I wanted to share this for anyone who is on a journey towards mental health (that’s all of us, right?), anyone who is recovering from addiction, anyone who is grieving a loss, any parents who have had to make some painful personal sacrifices to keep their families afloat during this crazy crazy time — to all the mothers doing the unpaid labour to keep things going — I SEE YOU. All I can say about this photo is that God has brought so many amazing moments to into my life lately, and this one is very high on the list!! Oh who am I kidding? I have lots more to say! 😉😂 I first remember reading a book by @sally.clarkson when I was 18 or 19 years old and babysitting for someone. It struck a chord with me and I tucked the ideas away for later when I had kids of my own. That day came when my oldest was 3 or 4 years old and I was really contemplating the kind of learning environment I wanted to create for him and his baby brother. I read Sally and Clay’s book, “Educating the Whole Hearted Child” and it filled me with excitement about what our home school could be like. It set me on a path that I’m more grateful for all the time. Some years later I had a little guy who challenged me as a parent in ways none of my other kids had. I wanted to understand him, love him, help him, but sometimes I didn’t know how. Sally and her son Nathan’s book, “Different” came to the rescue this time. It was the very thing my heart needed to feel peace and to help me understand and love my boy better. To say Sally Clarkson has been an influence in my life is not an exaggeration. She’s encouraged, inspired and comforted me. I’m truly grateful for her. And I can’t even tell you what a delight it was to stand next to her, me holding my first book and her holding her 23rd!
