Yá’át’ééh, hello, My name is Shaandiin Cedar, writing to you from a small van in Aotearoa New Zealand. In the mid-1980s my mother traveled to Arizona to protest efforts against the forced relocation of Hopi and Navajo people and the leasing of new land and water resources for coal and uranium development. During this time, my mother met a smart young man who’s family lived at the epicenter of this land dispute, an area of Northern Arizona called Big Mountain, the heart of the Navajo Nation and their traditional homeland. A few years later, I came along, Scotts-Irish and Cherokee on my mother’s side, and Chiishí and Naakai Dine’é on my father’s side. Like a lot of families, mine was not always perfect. Alcoholism and addiction plagued my father, uncles, aunts and cousins. They dealt with health issues, racism, trauma, recidivism, abuse, land-based identity crisis’, and poverty, cycles that, as an adult, I understand better in historical context. There has also been great healing, breaking cycles through community support and personal triumph. Which brings me to this moment. There is so much anxiety, tension and uncertainty in the world right now that It can be tempting to let cycles of fear and exhaustion defeat us. But we must move forward. For me, this looks like engaging in advocacy work, protesting, protecting land and celebrating cultural identity like my parents did. This looks like writing, starting hard conversations, often being the only brown person in the room and at the table, relearning the Navajo language, engaging in small and large acts of resistance, sustainability work, long hikes, climbing, laughing and contributing to work that shapes a future that’s just, equitable and ecologically sustainable.” - @ibexwool on Instagram

I attended UNB in Saint John after high school, and graduated with two degrees (Science and Arts) in 5 years, but still couldn’t see myself moving forward with either of those paths. Luckily I come from a family who are makers and who aren’t afraid to take a chance and dive into something new, so I started weaving on a loom my mom had and before I knew it I started selling and attending markets. We transformed a little shed into a shop to be able to sell our products locally. It was important to us to fill our new little shop with as many things as we could make ourselves, which is where the candle making began! Thanks to you all I have kept busy doing these both and am so thankful I am able to spend everyday doing something I love!! Spent most of Monday hiking and meeting the wonderful TNC Ohio staff at the Edge of Appalachia Reserve! @nature_org has been protecting land in Ohio since their first 42-acre purchase in 1959. Virus time is lonely, mama. My five-year-old said this while I held her after about an hour of crying before bed. Its one of the most honest statements Ive heard in a while. I feel a lot of pressure not to feel lonely, like their is something wrong with me if I havent found my groove six months in to this new normal but the truth is virus time is lonely. We try to hurry on these plains to reach the checkpoint. The landscape changes completely, everything is golden and we can here the bells of the sheep cattles. It feels good to see some life on the mountain again. As we arrive to the checkpoint, the athmosphere is great. We arrive greeded by the people, were we finally heroes ? We take a drink together and enjoy a warm local meal before taking the route again. At this point we meet with a journalist for an interview. Wow we are late man ! ( the busy life of the hiker 🏃😱 ) . We drop the bags and get to talk about our experience. At this point you need to understand that we are super damn tired arleady., Usually, we take an hour and 5 argues shooting our vlogs and it is a painful moment as some of you may know ...😂 But here, boomshaka, the magic happens, the words are coming easily, our tongues forget how dead we are and we talk like normal people !! Hopefully we get to leave before the night ! We are late... and we enter this area some croatians we met are calling the amazonia. Dont camp there they told us. It is too many bears. not safe. We walk and walk in this massive forest, and realize our biggest problem will be to find a flat spot.... We keep going and finally after an hour and half headlamps on we stop and pitch with no more space than we really need. We know for many people this kind of little spots are not even considered camp spot. But gues what... Being a person with heightened anxiety means that I need to have affirmations ready to take up space in my fertile and not always helpful imagination when things go south. When I am in these states of out of control nervous system response, I often try and make tools like this and I test them out on myself. I can say with certainty that working with these affirmations moved me from a state of deep sadness and fear into one of grounded joy and hope. Pick a card... While I love the idea of mass printing a deck in some regard, I generally prefer to make things by hand. There is a certain magic to the lines and the intention put into them. I was just trailing through my photos, and came across this one. This was taken on my recent trip to Peru, where I had the pleasure of spending time with 13 amazing women from all over the world, learning, sharing and experiencing Mother Nature at her finest. The majestic power of the Andes made me feel small, powerful and connected all at once. Looking back on this I can’t believe this was only a matter of less than 10 weeks ago. Včera ráno jsme se probudili u městečka Mora, které jsme si později zašli pohlédnout. Poté jsme se vydali k severnímu pobřeží jezera Vänern, kde jsme poobědvali, dali kafčo a prostě si udělali pohodičku 🌅 Odpoledne jsme se začali sbírat a vydali se na cestu do vesničky s barevnými domečky Smögen. Tam už jsme bohužel nedojeli. Valimu zřejmě praskla vačková hřídel nebo její náhon a my tak nebyli schopni pokračovat dál v cestě. Začali jsme přemýšlet, jak situaci vyřešit - nejjednodušší byla koupě a výměna motoru nebo transport domů. Psali a volali jsme všude možně, ale vzhledem k časovým možnostem a nabídce transportu jsme se rozhodli nedokončit cestu po vlastní ose a Valiho poslat domů kamionem 🚛 Tak jsme si uvařili dobrou véču, dali si cuba libre a užíváme si poslední noc ve Valim tady ve Švédsku. Děkujeme Bohu, že nás nepotkalo nic horšího a mohli jsme tu strávit nádherný měsíc 🙏 Nemrzí nás nic z toho, co se stalo, ale to, že naše svatební cesta pomalu končí. Once I’m in the store, I deposit my keys in my purse, & pull my list out. Once I’m done shopping, I head for the exit. Before I leave, I throw everything in my purse, sling my bags over my arm, & hold my keys between my fingers. I walk out of the store, shoulders back, head high, noticing everyone around me. If there’s another woman who’s alone or a mama w kids, I keep an eye out for them. Once I’m at a distance where I can see under my car, I make sure the only thing under there is pavement. Once I arrive at my car, I glance around. I unlock one door, climb in, lock it. Start the car, & leave. If you’re rolling your eyes, stop. If you’re a male, you still need to keep reading to understand how we as women are constantly needing to be aware that at any time we could be raped, kidnapped, abducted. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen to males, but it’s WAY more likely to happen to females. I’m not paranoid. I’m trying to live smartly & safely. But tbh, I’m kinda tired of holding my keys between my fingers. Since I’ve started walking around w my pink pepper spray swinging from my keychain, I’ve felt way more prepared, powerful, & confident, bc I know that I have something that’s made to defend myself, not just keys. I realize I’m very privileged. I don’t live in a place where I’m constantly in danger. I’ve never been sexually assaulted, but it doesn’t mean I never will be. The last two weeks I solo hiked and camped the tour du mont blanc , a 150 kilometer trek around the mont blanc with a total height gain around 10.000 meters. Initially the plan was to do only half of the trek, but I finished the whole tour yay! It was such a wonderful experience, being alone in nature for such a long time, tackling a 2500 meter col everyday ( my knees hate me now) , wildcamping, and experiencing how powerful or bodies are in acclimatising ( the first col took me three days, the other ones one day) . At the tail end of last year I made a goal to live outside more often, and over the past couple weeks I made that goal become a little more true, all by exploring every corner of a state I normally wouldnt choose. Using @campspot I was able to find campsites that not only allowed me to get outside and explore, but also keep a very safe distance from other humans in Americas dairyland, Wisconsin. It was a great get-away checking out the driftless region all the way up to the northern highlands. Day 99/100 - California Quail ⁣ [Continued from previous post}⁣ So, in answer to “What next?”…. I’m starting another 100 Day Project! That’s right.. I’m calling it 100 Days Of Doing Whatever The Heck I Feel Like! 🤣 I’m taking a sabbatical! ⁣ ⁣ Over the last few years I’ve been keeping a lot of balls in the air, but I’ve also been living with this constant feeling of needing to do more. Be more. Give more. I’ve been under a lot of pressure (mostly self-imposed) to prove myself. To justify my “job”. Make a decent income. To fit society’s definition of “successful”. I’ve been a bit like a hamster in a wheel, and all the while, I’ve been dealing with increasingly complicated health issues. Oh, and in recent times there’s been the whole 😷 situation. Life has thrown a few curve balls this year, as you would know!⁣ ⁣ All that is to say, over the last few years I haven’t made a lot of time for so many things I want to do. Things that I keep putting off, even around my house! I unpacked all of those boxes in a such a hurry, that I didn’t give myself time to organise, decorate or make any art for my own walls. Making a house a home is something that brings me so much joy, but I’ve been putting it off until I “have more time”. I don’t know if it’s because it’s my birthday month, and the Cancer hermit crab homebody in me is pulling me inwards.. but I’m really feeling a need to hit “pause” and hibernate for a while. ⁣ ⁣ Right now, sitting in the winter sunshine in my garden with no agenda sounds like the dream! After I’ve recharged in the sunshine I want to make time for doing some paintings for my own walls. Time for all of those DIY projects I’ve collected on my Pinterest boards over the years. Time for gardening and growing a food forest in my backyard. Time to learn new skills, and to take some of the many online classes I’ve signed up for, from permaculture to pattern design! Time to daydream, read and write for no reason. I think I have a book in me, but I need time. And space. Space for new ideas, inspiration, and insights. ⁣ ⁣ So, I’m calling it a sabbatical. A saíra-apunhalada (Nemosia rourei) recebe esse nome pela mancha vermelha do bico ao peito que lembra sangue escorrendo de um ferimento. Extremamente rara, sua primeira ocorrência no Espirito Santo foi em 1941 em Itarana/ES. Permaneceu sem registros por mais de 70 anos, sendo considerada extinta na natureza pela ciência, até que em 1998, foi encontrado um bando com 4 indivíduos em Conceição do Castelo/ES. Toda essa importância, tornou a saíra-apunhalada mundialmente conhecida. Em 2020, foi fundado o Programa de Conservação saíra-apunhalada, as ações do projeto ocorrem na região conhecida como Mata de Caetés nos municípios Castelo, Vargem Alta, Venda Nova do Imigrante e Domingos Martins. As pesquisas do programa se estendem também para Santa Teresa, Itarana e região do Caparaó, onde a saíra-apunhalada já ocorreu no passado.
