CREATURE FEATURE: Southeastern Pocket Gopher As you are driving down the highway, ever wonder what makes those sandy mounds on the grassy sides of the road? It is likely a Southeastern pocket gopher, a resident of Florida, Georgia and Alabama. These rodents grow up to 11 inches head to tip of tail and only weigh up to 10 ounces. They are also known as “sandy mounders.” Feeding on plant roots using their large buck teeth, these animals rarely come to the surface, but when they do, they make the mounds which consist of excavated sand and soil. They carry extra food on the sides of their mouths in “pockets” to store for later use. With a short rat-like tail, they are brownish in color and can dig a tunnel system up to six feet underground. One studied gopher had a burrow system extending almost 500 feet in length! Because they live below the surface, they have tiny eyes and ears and use a good sense of smell to find food. Pocket gophers aid the ecosystem by aerating the soil (as do worms). Other small animals also use the pocket gopher burrows. Our native pocket gophers’ population is threatened by land use changes such as residential and commercial development. Next time you are on the road, keep an eye out for the sandy mounder! The Australian Sea Lions have very distinct characteristics between the males and females. The males are dark brown with a light yellow mane around their heads. 🚨 New patient alert 🚨 Well, sort of. Hold onto your hats, it’s a lengthy one. As many of you know, on September 2nd we were so thrilled as we released another four of our harbor seal pups.. We are sorry to say that this past weekend we had to readmit one of those four, Montauk. After spending just over a week in the wild, Montauk’s condition started to dramatically decline, and he was starting to lose weight. This change was, unfortunately, a direct result of human interaction (HI). Montauk found himself bouncing around a few beaches in the area and completely unable to rest and recover due to harassment from beach goers. Reports came in of people getting far too close for photos, just to investigate him, and in some cases even force him back into the water. This caused a massive stress response that became detrimental to his health. He was brought back in Saturday to treat exhaustion, dehydration and newly acquired respiratory issues. What’s more unfortunate is this is the second time Montauk has fallen victim to human interaction. Montauk was initially brought to us by Marine Mammals of Maine as a maternally dependent pup after being picked up out of the water by a boater thinking they were doing the right thing(it is more than likely that Montauk was not abandoned.) We cannot stress enough how important it is to keep back 150 ft(🚌🚌🚌) and are here to remind everyone that seals are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, so 150 feet is in fact a law, NOT a guideline. Seals are semi aquatic animals, which means they come on to land to rest and regulate their body temperature. The beach is their natural habitat, we must do better to share and respect their natural space. If you feel like you are witnessing an animal in distress, please call your local stranding authorities. Finally, it’s GAME OVER for this psychotic animal abuser!! Yesterday, PETA, @wildanimalsanctuary, and @turpentinecreek wildlife refuge rescued 22 lions, tigers, and lion/tiger hybrids from Wildlife in Need under court order after we successfully sued notorious owner and operator Tim Stark for egregious violations of the Endangered Species Act. Tim Stark’s exhibitors license has been revoked and a warrant is out for his arrest after he hid animals who were being removed by authorities earlier this week. US Marshals ordered Stark to remain at least 2 miles away from the property during yesterday’s rescue after he made violent threats against PETA staff. Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs! NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June.
