If someone gets vulnerable with me, I immediately want to solve their problems, and Ive only recently realized that its not because I want to help them, but because hearing their pain triggers my own, and I dont like how that feels. Since I cant sit with my pain, I work to distract, avoid, or medicate from it. Thats all temporary, and the only real benefit will come from simply sitting with it. Spending time alone has been both lonely and liberating. I can hear myself, not just the voices of everyone else. Hearing myself has been teaching me a lot about who I truly am. It feels like Im spending less time deciding my life, and more time opening myself up where my life is supposed to be, based on what feels right in my gut. This hasnt been easy, and often I crumble and grab the phone or turn on the TV for a quick distraction, but Im slowly adjusting to replace those with a journal, or out loud conversations with myself, as I waslk around my spot in circles. Im not perfect at honouring my commitment to sit with my pain, but Im making progress, and that counts for something. We have unlimited options to avoid being alone with ourselves; pills, porn, phones, dating apps, social media, netflix, sugary foods, and any other distraction with a price tag. But it costs nothing to just sit with it, breathe with it, let it do its damage, and realize youre still there. The anxiety builds, and the urge to get a dopamine fix is real, but as with all addictions, it gets darkest before the dawn.
