My brother Alex is one of my favorite people on this earth. Alex has low functioning autism and is non-verbal. As well, Alex was born with Sturge Weber Syndrome, has a birthmark on the right side of his face, is globally delayed, and visually impaired. When Alex was 6 months old, he had to undergo a brain surgery for intractable seizures, which resulted in weakness in the left side of his body and limited use of his left arm. Fortunately, he was accepted into world renown school @eden_autism in Princeton, NJ and has been given so much care and opportunity in his journey throughout life. In case you haven’t seen, I am putting together a music compilation of artists, bands, and musicians with the help of @dimm_entertainment and @hellmindedrecords to give back to Eden Autism who all they have done to help autistic children, adults, and families, including my own. 100% of the proceeds will be given to Eden. I love Alex so much and I want the best possible future for him, so contributing your music, donating to the compilation when it comes out, or simply sharing and spreading the awareness is incredibly appreciated! Hey guys, it’s Alex (the other half of Hungry Pants). I’ve asked Joey to give me the social media controls for a minute so I can share something that’s important to me as a small business owner. As we finish celebrating #LatinxHeritageMonth, I am reminded of the immense drive and sacrifice that my grandparents had to come to the US. As a Spanish speaking Chilean immigrant, my grandfather started washing windows in NYC while focusing on learning English. He went on to open his own insurance agency and quickly rose as a top producer exclusively serving the Latin community in the tri-state area. His value of entrepreneurship and the ability to write his own story, despite the most challenging circumstances, is often what I reflect on when I need a push to keep going. As a first generation American, I am proud to contribute to the fabric of our community and create opportunities for those individuals that are working to write their own story. I’m also grateful to live in a place like Orlando that has so many people with unique stories of their own and a community willing to celebrate them. I lost my brother yesterday. Clark was a model human being, my guiding force. He took care of me when we were kids. During our early Toronto years, all we had was each other. The first time I watched 誰も知らない, Onward, and Grave of Fireflies - I felt those films summed up my relationship with him. Clark bravely battled his illness for two years, with my parents on his side. In life, he taught me how to appreciate manga, Star Trek, Batman, Tom Cruise, Joshua Tree, and many many more pop culture references. We talked about movies all the time. He also taught me to be generous, patient, and self-critical. So many of the traits I am today is because of him. I had a chance to chat with him for the last time last week for about thirty minutes, during which we made plans to go to Joshua Tree together. I also had a chance to thank him, and to let him know how lucky I feel that I got to have him as my brother, just in case I won’t have another chance. Now I will never have another chance to call him or spend time with him. He will always be on my mind every day for as long as I’ll live. Farewell, brother. Thank you for helping me find my way. What’s a bar without a barback? Nothing? Nonfictional? Less fun? I’ve worked with @gato1079 for as a long as I’ve worked with/for @sueyinthecity and @mixtressnyc... going on 11 years if I do the math right. We started working together at Lani Kai, then @cloverclubny and then he helped us get the systems in place at @leyendabk so we could actually function. Everyone else calls him Amante, but I call him Mi Vida. To this day, I haven’t ended more shifts and broke down more bars with anyone else more than him. This photo was taken 31 years ago on my first birthday, and its still one of my favorites. It is an all encompassing snap shot of the pure LOVE that created me. I look at this photo and wonder if my parents could imagine that three decades later their little brown girl would still be fighting for the type of change they spent so much of their lives fighting for. . Growing up as a bi-racial child, with a white parent and a black parent, there wasnt a single day that went by that I wasnt aware of race, what it meant, and the polarizing differences of experiences. I have witnessed day in and day out the way the world treated my father vs the way it treats my mother and I witnessed how it extended further beyond just my parents. . What is going on right now cuts me on the deepest of levels. Many people are finally waking up to whats been happening, while others have been fighting tooth and nail for many many years. As far as Im concerned it doesnt matter where you fall on the spectrum. What matters is your commitment to LOVE. Your commitment to learning and becoming better. And your commitment to justice and equality. . I know that a lot of people are feeling helpless right now-- its important to remember there are so many different ways to be of service and to help create change. Sometimes its necessary to take a beat and be still to figure out which lane to take and how YOU can be most effective. FYI I am STILL figuring out all of the ways (it never ends). . This platform, MY platform is built on LOVE- it always has been and it always will be-- and I will continue to fight for it in all of the ways I know how. I encourage you to sit with yourself and ask the ways in which you too can fight for love. It’s hard to find the right words in moments like this. My cousin Joey passed away this morning after a terrible car accident. He had just recently turned 19. He was such an important figure in my life and the lives of my entire family. I grew up with him and loved him like he was my brother. I love you bud. I will cherish the memories made with you for the rest of my life. There were plenty of tears today, but I know that once they dry we will look back with only smiles on our faces. And even now I can’t help but giggle at the little memories that seemed so minuscule just two days ago, but mean so much more now. The little things seem to flood my head more than I ever thought they would. Like when I kicked your ass at ping pong two weeks ago or when we played violent video games without telling my mom when we were younger and when you, Carmen, and I would fight over the top bunk until we gave up and all slept on it. My dad was a cop while I was growing up. And a good cop. The best cop. The kind that had his office in the projects and the kids did their homework there to be safe and he took them on camping trips and gave us the DARE bear and told us all not to do drugs good cop. I’m serious. The epitome of protect and serve and someone you are thrilled and relieved to see coming if you were in danger. Objectively, if you were to describe what a “good cop” looks like- you are looking at my dad. I’m a white girl with a cop dad, so I recognize my privilege in saying this but- I loved police. All my experiences with police were good and positive. Even when I was pulled over for speeding or rolling through a stop sign as a teenager and gave the officer who pulled me over every bit of my teenage attitude- I had a good experience with them. Now, my dad is retired, but I mention all that to really lay out how much I love cops and appreciate the good I saw them do in my - very privileged white life. However the more I’m learning, it’s seems good cops are unable to restrain the bad cops. So the mere existence of good cops doesn’t matter or at the very least, it’s not enough. It’s that there are too many bad ones. Or, the union keeps it so the bad ones don’t have any consequences or repercussions for doing really bad things. Like murder. Not “officer-involved shootings”— murders. Y’all- something’s gotta change. Police cannot keep killing black people. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain... the list is endless. And now Jacob Blake who was shot 7 times in the back- while his kids watched. His little kids. We can’t, as a country, keep perpetuating the stereotype that black kids have broken homes when the very same system is the one breaking them by killing their dads. Jacob Blake was breaking up a fight. He was being “the good cop.” Before the actual cops showed up and shot him. (From what I understand at this moment, he seems to be out of surgery and fighting for his life. Praying that he makes it.) But there are so many that didn’t make it and that don’t. He is just pure magic. A thing as simple as ice cream can give him so much joy..... and its #epic. After one of the toughest years of my life (and really Im sure so many feel this globally) with it escalating the last month and a half I find it a struggle lately to keep pushing forward with a smile. (Especially when you experienced a loved one in the hospital and you feel so helpless because u cant be there) Staying positive and keeping faith has been a challenge lately. Honestly more challenging than ever before for me. However this special amazing little human that I have had the privilege of carrying in my womb and being loved by, is my world. He is my teacher. I have had a few people who have diminished me, me as a woman, me as a mother, me as a woman of faith, and frankly me as a human being, but I was blessed with a son who reminds me we as humans can be gifted, loving, kind, and inspirational to others. We can be uplifting and empathetic. We can be pure..... we can be real and we can enjoy life for all that it can be, even in times of difficulty. This week is National Eye Health Week so were sharing Bens story to raise awareness of the importance of routine eye checks. Ben was 14 when he went to the optician for a routine check-up. Within hours he was referred to hospital and a scan revealed he had a brain tumour 💔 Immediate action was required and he underwent surgery in 2013. Ben recovered well but needed further treatment, this time in the US, to halt the growth of his tumour. Bens mum Jane said: “My world had been turned upside down. I had walked into the opticians with a child who seemed perfectly healthy and was just days away from going into year 10 to start his GCSE courses. Less than 24 hours later my son was diagnosed with a brain tumour and needed life-saving surgery. I was 29 weeks pregnant. When Ben turned to me and said: ‘I really want to be here to meet my new baby brother or sister.
