Or does Klimt use these traditional associations only to demonstrate to what extent he is celebrating nature and existence, trumpeting the wonders of nature and of the world? – This splendid painting was restituted to the heirs of Adele and Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer by the Republic of Austria in March 2006. Style No. SS38417 & SS38201 / SUN SURF SPECIAL EDITION “TORNADO TIGER” & “ONE HUNDRED TIGERS（百虎）” この「トルネードタイガー」は和柄の王道的なモチーフである龍と虎で柄を構成しているが、それらをボーダー・パターンに配するという斬新なアイデアは数あるヴィンテージのなかでも異彩を放つ。また、通常であればオリエンタル・デザインにはレーヨン壁縮緬生地が使われていることが多いが、この作品はレーヨン羽二重（フィラメントレーヨン）生地を使っているのも特徴。威嚇し合う龍虎のモチーフを縦方向に連ねており、このようなプリント版の継ぎ目の無いデザインを刷り上げるには非常に高度な技術を要する。和柄アロハシャツとしての完成度の高さがヴィンテージファンを魅了して復刻のリクエストも多く、2001年にサンサーフから発売して以来、実に19年ぶりの再復刻を果たした。 共に紹介している赤いシャツは、ヴィンテージアロハシャツのなかでも最高傑作のひとつとされる「百虎」。この百虎の図案には、今回復刻したトルネードタイガーのモチーフと酷似した虎が描かれている。どちらの作品も当時、原画を手掛けた職人が同じであることが推測でき、世界に知られる名作でありながら未だ謎に包まれた百虎のルーツを辿るヒントがこのデザインの中に隠されているのかもしれない。 “TORNADO TIGER” textile design (a black shirt in photo) is composed with two traditional Japanese motifs, dragons and tigers. It is rare to see this type of design being arranged into the stripe pattern, and also printed on filament rayon fabric instead of usual crepe fabric. It has series of dragon and tiger printed repeatedly in vertical direction without any misalignment, which requires very skillful technique of printing. Because of the increasing demands for reproduction from many dedicated vintage fans who have been fascinated by the high degree of perfection as a Japanese motif Hawaiian shirt, Sun Surf released the shirts for the first time in 19 years, since 2001. “ONE HUNDRED TIGERS” (a red shirt) is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Vintage Hawaiian shirts. It is interesting to note that because the tigers in the shirt remarkably resemble the tigers in “Tornado Tiger”, it is assumable that these two artworks might be done by a same designer. Even the well-known masterpieces have still many things that have remained unsure.
