It goes without saying that 2020 has been a hard fucking year for all of us. Relatively speaking, I’m doing okay - I still have a job and a roof over my head, and my loved ones are safe and healthy. But I’ve completely lost my sense of who I am and have felt like a ship adrift at sea for a very long time. The truth is, without travel I am no one. I have one foot in hospitality and one foot in fitness, but I don’t fall squarely into either of these communities, and I know at the end of the day I’m an outsider looking in. I built my identity on the assumption that I’d always be free to pack up and fly off to a distant country when I started to feel caged. Fleeting encounters with strangers and unfamiliar situations that force me out of my comfort zone are where I thrive. Commitment is my greatest weakness - I don’t know how to stay in one place or build meaningful relationships with the same people. I only know how to run away. So that’s what I have to say for my birthday post this year. Francesca was born in South Florida but raised in Haiti. At a young age she expressed interest in architecture and attended Miamis Design and Architecture High School. She completed her Bachelor of Design in Architectural Studies and Fine Arts at Florida International University. In 2012 she earned her Masters of Fine Art at the Rochester Institute of Technology and received their Wallace Center Purchase Prize Award. She has had several solo exhibitions and participated in a variety of group exhibitions along with performance and public art installations. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Art Miami, and recently, Quotidian Gallery in Los Angeles.  Francescas contemporary work is influenced by various sources that range from architecture to psychology. Her multidisciplinary practice often explore dual concepts such as life and death, resistance and obedience, and control and freedom. She currently lives in Los Angeles, California. . Many moons ago, before I knew about the asphalt... or exercise... or waking up at the crack of dawn in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, I had a beautiful friend who lived it. She ran every morning, travelled abroad to participate in marathons and looked amazing for it. This lady was a gazelle. Graceful, elegant, gorgeous and strong. On some Saturdays she would tease me with an invitation to go running with her, and I would always respond with some variation of Crazy woman, its 5am. ON A SATURDAY. Get away from me! It was particularly upsetting at the times when I had just come in from a club or lounge 15 minutes before her crazy call. Who would have thought that today, getting up at 530am (and sometimes 4am for long bike rides) would be my thing? I’m walking. I’m riding. I’m planking. And I love it. Life can be so funny. I wish she and I could have done one loop of Bourdillon together - me on my bike, of course. She would have loved the Lekki/Ikoyi Bridge. Uche Felicia Orizu, my neighbor and friend lost her battle against cancer eight years ago, today and I really miss her friendship. I know she is in a better place, and all that, but not having her here still hurts. She was way too young to go, but God always has the final say and I trust Him completely.
