It was a cold and rainy night in Rome when John Convertino and I went for a walk with our good friend Carlo Martelli through some of the ancient neighborhoods. We were soaking up the mood of the place and suddenly the conversation turned towards il Maestro. We had just walked near the Roman Forum and were near his apartment. “Wouldn’t it be great to see him and have a chance to say hello” one of us said. So we walked by his residence to tip our hats to the one who had poured so much creativity and liveliness into the world of improvisation and soundtrack music. We traveled far from our Sonoran Desert home where a rainy day there is considered not only a rarity but a sign. Much like Morricone’s work there is a lot of space for nuances to whisper some of the more subtle aspects of his music and allow for signs to be felt and heard. I love how experimental he was as a composer and storyteller. His use of unique combinations of instruments in his arrangements still catch my attention when listening to his body of work. Perhaps the fact that he started out as a trumpet player has something to do with his orchestral voice and the connection we felt to our own group’s use of trumpets or maybe it lies in the strong sense of mood and place with his music. So there we were standing in the rain paying our respects to Il Maestro and Carlo having worked at RCA for many years told us a great story. During a recording session Some years ago there was a short break and all of the musicians left the studio. When they returned the electric guitarist who had left his instrument leaning on the gas heater found that the strings were all out of tune. Without having a chance to retune the warped sounding guitar the orchestra began playing. When it came to the guitar’s part Morricone heard the strange sound, stopped the orchestra and instructed the guitar player directly “don’t change a thing” and kept going. I love that. It encapsulates a lot about who he is and what makes his music so great. I imagine he was an exceptionally good listener. Free God... Reflecting on the past year, i must say for me its been one of immense challenge, where my comfort faith and boundaries were greatly tested, physically, emotionally and spiritually... a year ago this time of year i woke experiencing overwhelming pain and unable to move.. though i spent a few months lying down, I believed i would heal and focused on doing so and after many months of pain and discomfort, loving support daily stretches breathwork, long slow intentional walks i became mobile... through the winter i pushed my limits and went back to the gym , pushing light weights painfully (despite the warnings and be carefuls) in april i stated running again, it hurt, my body would shutter mid stride and spasm.. i kept pushing and in may the pain was gone.. this summer i hit the bars and lifted moderate weight, when I recently returned to the gym my strength and range of motion returned.. Often when we experience any disease of the body we become attached to the feeling and believe it becomes a constant of our reality, we then recreate it in our being.. be mindful not to do this, choose how we wish our body to function and then give it the proper conditions for it to become real.. Pain is an alert that something needs attention, give the cause not the pain awareness and begin correcting and healing.. This past year was a big lesson for me about faith.. it may be one of our most powerful tools... Looking forward to what this personal new year brings...
