Join us today for a final #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek otter highlight, with our very own Schuster! Schuster has always been a bit shellfish, managing to take all the live enrichment for himself. The first time we gave live crabs to the otters he took all three for himself, even though he was only a year old and half the size as the other otters at the time. Recently, they were given crabs again. This time they were given four crabs for enrichment and Schuster took three of them while Nuka and Oswald had to share one! Schuster was originally found stranded as a pup with injuries along his side that were consistent with a shark attack. He was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and rehabilitated; however, he was not able to be released back into the wild. He arrived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in February 2012. Schuster is often seen enjoying ice treats with toys frozen inside them. Schuster was immediate friends with Oswald and they can be seen playing together in their exhibit. - @oregoncoastaquarium on Instagram

Follow @Mitty for more. — REPOST • @natgeo Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Mitty As our ship made its way into an inlet late in the evening, as we were looking for shelter, we were greeted by a colony of Adélie penguins along the soft slope of an iceberg. After hours of diving deep into the frigid black waters off Antarctica in search of silverfish and krill, they shuffled into groups and greeted one another in a chorus of raspy squawks. The survival of these plucky little birds is dependent on the natural rhythm of sea ice as it forms and recedes—a cycle that is now threatened as global temperatures rise. As I watched them gossip among themselves and preen their salty feathers, I worried about their future. Our @Sealegacy team has worked to establish marine protected areas around Antarctica to reduce the impacts of a drastically shifting climate, giving sea life a chance to recover. The battle against climate change is both a sprint to save our global biodiversity and a marathon to mitigate the effects on future generations. It’s going to take all of us to meet these challenges and save our oceans. Sorry for the long post. Story time: you can catch me on the season 2 premier of @the_politician on @netflix. This little scene means more to me than other things I’ve done before. You see as a white Latino for the most part I usually go out for stereotypes of Latin men. When my agent sent me this audition I genuinely thought it was a mistake, the role was “lobster fisherman with thick Boston accent” I thought, I’m not from Boston, this is a mistake. I was so used to being portrayed a certain way that I didn’t think I was able to be anything else other than what I’ve been told I am. “Ethnically ambiguous” I figured what the hell I got nothing to lose and so I called @julialopriore and bless her heart she had her super Boston mom record the scene so I could work on the accent. So now this Colombian immigrant, raised in New York ended up playing a lobsterman with a boston accent. I’m grateful to have worked on this awesome show and a huge thanks to @bradfalchuk who directed the episode and managed to make this shoot work while we were out in the bay in freezing weather. After our feast at Kuromon Ichiba Market, we headed to Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan which is located in the Tempozan Harbour Village of Osaka Bay. This is a spectacular aquarium with 15 tanks, each representing a specific region of the Pacific Rim. The central tank is home to the main attraction of the aquarium… the whale shark - the largest extant fish species You start your tour from the 8th floor. From there, you slowly spiral down around the central tank. Since some of the tanks span several floors, you get to see different perspectives of the sea life as you continue on your journey. You can also pick up some whale shark ice cream in the cafe. After our visit to Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, we took the 10 minute Captain Line ferry to Universal City Port, home to Universal Studios Japan and Universal CityWalk. Thats where we came across Eggs ‘n Things (if youve been to Oahu before youll recognize this place) and ordered up the Roast Turkey Benedict and paired it with the Berry Dressed Pancakes. They also had a takoyaki museum here if you have a hankering for octopus balls. Irish property developer Ballymore has picked up a landmark gig in Dublin, to transform the St James’s Gate Guinness brewery site into a “visionary neighbourhood for living, entrepreneurship, creativity and commerce.” Drinks giant Diageo, which owns Guinness, has named Sean Mulryan’s Ballymore as its development partner for the major project after a three-year selection process. Other candidates included Harcourt, Oxley, Hines, Quintain and U&I. The ambition is turn the historic 12.6 acre site on the banks of the Liffey into “a standard bearer for the city’s future, as Dublin’s first zero carbon district”, called Guinness Quarter. “Together we plan to transform the iconic site into one of the most dynamic mixed-use urban quarters in Europe,” declares Diageo. The St James’s Gate brewery has been the home of Guinness since 1759. It was once known as a “city within a city”, with its own railway line, medical department and fire brigade. Ballymore’s regeneration plans aim to keep the site “at the heart of the local community, while also boosting the regeneration of its Liberties area location and the broader city.” New public spaces will be created, with heritage buildings preserved although “the zero carbon ambition will see existing buildings assessed for potential re-use and renewable energy potential explored.” Ballymore was founded by Mulryan and his wife Bernardine back in 1982, and is still 100% owned and managed by the Irish property tycoon. The firm has some significant regen projects under its belt in both Ireland and the UK, including London City Island and Old Spitalfields Market in London. The Antarctic ice sheet spans an area of almost 14 million square kilometres being the largest single mass of ice on earth, with the oldest core ever extracted to be estimated at 800,000 years old. Since the last glacial period around 120,000 years ago, we have been in an interglacial era called the Holocene. This year we experienced the hottest day on recent record in Antarctica at 18°C on the 6th of February. 🐢Tourism as a game changer for the conservation of sea turtles. 🦕Sea turtles are living fossils that have navigated the world’s oceans from the time of dinosaurs. Unfortunately, All species of sea turtles are threatened with extinction due to anthropogenic threats such as overfishing, bycatch, hunting, infectious disease, pollution, climate change and habitat loss. 😢In Mexico, the exploitation of sea turtles has been a traditional activity among coastal communities for centuries. The rising market demand led to an increase in sea turtle exploitation which reached its peak between the 1950s -1970s when more than 50% of the world’s sea turtle catch occurred in Mexico. ☠️As a result, all sea turtle populations in Mexico collapsed, forcing the Mexican government to declare a total ban on sea turtle fisheries and trade of derived products in 1990. Despite the ban, sea turtles and their eggs are still consumed in illegal acts. 🤝The long-term conservation of species is dependent on local political support as well as wider community support. 🍃The sustainable tourism can generate income and provide employment and at the same time support the conservation efforts. 🙌🏻Turtle hatchling releases can be used to increase public awareness of the threats facing sea turtles and their habitats. They grow from roughly 10 kg (22 pounds) at birth to as much as 40 kg (88 pounds) just 12 days later, when fully weaned. Thanks to their mothers’ especially fat milk, they can gain more than 2 kg (4.5 pounds) a day! À soixante-sept ans, Pompon sort enfin de l’obscurité et est reconnu comme un des artistes majeurs du genre animalier. Conçu en plusieurs versions entre 1920 et 1927, l’Ours blanc a fait l’objet de multiples éditions, réductions et agrandissements, en plâtre, bronze, biscuit, marbre ou pierre de Lens. Il constitue l’oeuvre manifeste de François Pompon, reconnu pour ses formes épurées, synthétiques, et ses surfaces lisses, nées d’un renoncement progressif à tous les éléments anecdotiques pour se concentrer sur l’essence du sujet. L’artiste réalisa un masque à partir de l’agrandissement de l’Ours ; fixé sur la porte de son atelier au 3, rue Campagne-Première à Paris, il accueillait le visiteur comme une apparition passe-muraille. L’unique version en bronze, tirée du vivant de l’artiste, en 1930, est conservée au musée Pompon à Saulieu. Le plâtre de Roubaix provient de la famille de l’artiste et présente les mêmes traces de coups de râpe que le bronze. Ce masque s’impose de manière spectaculaire par ses dimensions, par son traitement virtuose du plâtre et par sa polychromie avec le léger maquillage des yeux, révélant une discrète influence de l’art égyptien. . The next morning we took a Zodiac through the beautiful Cierva Cove just off the Antarctic Peninsula. The blue ice was spectacular and the wildlife was too! REPOST // @britishantarcticsurvey with @make_repost ・・・ More than 1,600km away from the nearest #Antarctic research station, scientists from the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) have discovered and successfully mapped deep seabed channels under #ThwaitesGlacier in West #Antarctica. These channels may be the pathway for warm ocean water to melt the underside of the ice. The data, collected by #ITGC research missions, using aircraft and ship-born survey, are helping scientists to understand the contribution this huge and remote glacier is likely to make to future global sea level rise. Two new papers describe the discovery; the first led by Dr Kelly Hogan, marine geophysicist at BAS, and the second by Dr Tom Jordan, aero-geophysicist at BAS. Both published today in The Cryosphere.
