Xavier’s family has been lifting him to transfer into their current vehicle because they had a non-accessible van. As he has grown, transferring him this way had become very difficult and they decided they need a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, they were unable to leave their home, but our partners at @vmivans and @amsvans came to them. They conducted a needs assessment, valued their trade-in, worked with them to pick the perfect vehicle, secured financing, and then delivered the vehicle with our risk-free process. The first publicly available electric vehicle fast charging station in a First Nation community in BC is open in Osoyoos. We met with the Osoyoos Indian Band Council to thank them for partnering with us to help make this possible. The station is decorated with Syilx-inspired artwork created by the Osoyoos Indian Band Youth Council. As part of Ochsner’s mission to serve, heal, lead, educate and innovate on a local and global scale, the University of Queensland(UQ) Ochsner Clinical School began an innovative program in 2012 in which 4th year medical students have the opportunity to do one of their core rotations(called medicine in society) in Haiti. This program provides the students a first-hand global health experience in their final year of training. In the summer of 2019, @uqochsner selected six medical students to be part of an academic medical mission to Haiti, which would take place in the summer of 2020. This year’s selected students include Diab Ali, Jacob Boudreaux, Monica Gillie, Bailey Goodwin, Angelica Hinchman and Andrew Wayment. The students are mentored by Dr. Yvens Laborde, the medical director of Global Health Education at Ochsner Health and founder of the humanitarian foundation, FONDYLSAHH, which is a Haitian based non-profit organization promoting health, education, agriculture and economic development. FONDYLSAHH partners with the Haitian Ministry of Health to provide services to a number of healthcare facilities in Haiti. Historically, this rotation allowed Ochsner physicians and medical students to treat thousands of patients in underserved areas of the country with limited access to care. This partnership prioritizes a collaboration between the community and existing health care system in Haiti and the Ochsner team. It is our aim to promote a mutually beneficial relationship serving the needs of the communities while also educating the students on the principles of global health. “We believe strongly that our students have opportunities to not just learn, but help provide healthcare where it is desperately needed,” said Dr. Yvens Laborde, Medical Director-Global Health Education with UQ OCS. “Global health is local health and we are determined to train physicians who graduate with global view of health and healthcare,” he added. 💪🏼 @huntington_beach_firefighters ・・・ On Nov. 11, 16-year-old Tim Deits parents found him at home unconscious and in cardiac arrest. Engine 45 and Engine 44 arrived two minutes after 911 was called and provided CPR, defibrillation, airway management, and life saving medications. Paramedics were able to get a faint pulse and blood pressure back in the ambulance on the way to Hoag Hospital. Doctors told Tims family that he would need a heart transplant but 2 weeks later Tim walked out of the hospital with an internal defibrillator and no other serious injuries. Tim and his parents stopped by Lake fire station to say thank you and share his story. . Last week @saddlebackchurch, in partnership with our Westminster Family Resource Center, provided free food to those in need at a community drive-thru grocery distribution at Westminster Mall. @westminsterpdca officers also stopped by to assist with the distribution. Today we received our new refrigerated (and stuffed!) van from our friends @wholefoods, as part of the Nourishing Our Neighborhoods program. Presented at their 50th new store opening in Wayne this morning, this van will allow us to rescue 20,000 lbs. of healthy food per week, diverting it from landfill and redistributing it to our network of agencies that serve our neighbors in need. Yes, we are still open normal hours. Sun-Thu 10am-Midnight Fri-Sat 10am-1am In addition to requiring masks, which we have for free, some changes have been made to accommodate social distancing guidelines and ensure proper sanitization: - Technically, we are supposed to limit capacity to 50%, but we are overly cautious. We are capping it at 20%. - The Cidercade is now cashless. Only cards are accepted. - Some tables and chairs have been removed to ensure distancing and make aisles wider. - We have adopted the procedures of airlines and purchased ULV foggers. These foggers allow complete coverage and sanitize surfaces for weeks. - We also have an Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) swab tester that enables total surface hygiene verification. This is what is used in FDA facilities. - We have staff sanitizing games constantly. - Disinfectant wipes are available. - And, of course, hand sanitizer is everywhere. - @cidercade on Instagram

In May, we decided to take advantage of being closed and embarked on repairing the floor in our kitchen. We never would have dreamed that we would be doing it again so soon! But here we are four months later facing the SAME issue we thought we had addressed. Thanks to the Roger Roger sandwich we have a loyal customer and dear friend, Christos, who knows the importance of doing things right the first time around. Even though he doesn’t normally take on small jobs like this one, his love for the Roger Roger and desire to be able to get one when he’s downtown, compelled him to repair our floor on his day off! The meals have all been given out, believe it or not, and the community, far and wide (Im talking about the Bega Valley LGA) are so appreciative of them. Healthy, delicious - they are a hug to the soul for many people. As you probably would be aware, the #COVID restrictions are really causing quite a lot of grief for many people down here, already traumatised by the loss of their homes or near-misses caused by the bushfires. And now the anxiety is ramping up, with bushfire season being declared today, September 1, the weather is wonderful but warming up, people are still living in tents and vans, and many also battling local government bureaucracy to get approval to rebuild. Ive heard many stories of domestic violence escalating and depression and suicide increasing, as well as people dying suddenly (which I believe is caused by the stress). So, although a meal might not sound much in the wider scheme of life, it means a lot to the recipients because they know someone has cared enough to source the food, cook it, and bring it down here to them. We got a call from a helpful neighbor letting us know about a Facebook post in @ryeryebrookmoms that mentioned the families affected by the fires in Port Chester were in need of kitchen items and toiletries. Our operations team members, Jake and Frank, quickly got these items together and stayed late this past Friday to deliver a van full of personal care supplies like toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant from our retail recovery program. Thanks to the San Diego community’s generosity in support of the Food Bank’s COVID-19 Response Fund, we were able to provide capacity building grants to a number of our nonprofit partners including Friendships For Hope in National City to help them distribute more food to more people affected by the pandemic. Their $6,000 grant helped purchase this brand-new, refrigerated van which will enable them to pick up nutritious, perishable foods including fresh produce, dairy products and frozen proteins to distribute to families in need in the South Bay area. COVID-19 has severely impacted the supply of blood units available in local hospitals, because many of the common donation sites were forced to close. But as New Jersey’s Governor Phil Murphy has stated, “The Covid-19 outbreak threatens to disrupt our blood supply and we must continue these operations to ensure we can meet the critical meeting medical needs of all New Jersey Residents.” The American Red Cross volunteers and staff work to provide relief and support to those in crisis. This includes disaster relief, supporting international services, helping military families and veterans, and providing lifesaving blood through hosting blood drives. This past week, Puratos for Purpose was lucky enough to partner with Puratos US at our Headquarters in Pennsauken, NJ to sponsor the third annual America Red Cross Blood Drive.
