Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs! Lynxes are being considered for reintroduction in Ireland as part of an extensive re-wilding project. These magnificent wildcats used to be widespread across the island of Ireland once upon a time, but were driven to domestic extinction due to loss of habitat and human hunting. Rosette patterns to leopards are like fingerprints to humans. Rosettes come in a variety of shapes, sizes and formations and learning how to identify and isolate these patterns for comparison against other coats, is a leopard identification skill that takes some practice! The Olympic Cougar Project may be a misleading name, as we are also collecting data on bobcats for Pantheras small cat program, in conjunction with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. Here, one of our remote cameras captured an image of a bobcat and their prize, a mountain beaver. Mountain beavers, also known as aplodontia, boomers or sewellel are endemic rodents to the coastal forests of the north western United States and British Columbia. El gato montés de Escocia, que antaño vivía por toda Gran Bretaña, sobrevive hoy solo en las Highlands escocesas. Ante esta situación, la Junta de Andalucía colabora en el partenariado internacional Saving Wildcats, ofreciendo asesoramiento, en calidad de experto, para el desarrollo de un programa de cría en cautividad de su primo escocés. En este proyecto de conservación que lidera la Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), colaboran también otras entidades de Escocia (NatureScot, Forestry and Land Scotland, The Cairngorms National Park Authority) y Suecia (Nordens Ark). Para RZSS, la experiencia de 17 años de cría en cautividad del lince ibérico en Andalucía puede ser clave para evitar la desaparición del felino escocés. An old male snow leopard eats a domestic sheep killed during a snowstorm near a village in Indias Spiti Valley. Studies done by scientists at @snowleopardtrust show that even in the presence of abundant wild prey like blue sheep and Ibex, snow leopards still opportunistically hunt livestock. Its this soft spot for an easy meal that, at least partly, has brought these cats into conflict with humans. All creatures in these remote, rugged, brutally cold mountains, humans and snow leopards included, live with a very thin margin for survival. A familys loss of a sheep—or a donkey or yak calf—results in the loss of precious rupees and calories. An innovative insurance program introduced by wildlife biologist Charu Mishra in the 1990s and implemented and administered by locals has reduced the threat to families and their hostility toward the cats. The Wildlife Initiative has recently gone forward with a research project where they trapped five Lynx and put the collars on them. The collars will fall off after a few months but the purpose of them is to track the movements of the Lynx. If their movements can be traced, Zoologists can better understand their patterns and aid them. This form of trapping is completely legal and the Lynx are released without harm after getting the collar. The results will be out this fall (Kowitz). Spring is here on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. That means an increase in young cats dispersing or heading out on their own. Last month we GPS-collared two subadult cougars (C21 & C22) that weve been monitoring with their mother (C5) since last January. When we initially collared the mother our houndsman said she had 3 kittens but subsequent camera footage that we got only ever showed two at a time. Now 9 months later we can officially show that yes, indeed she has had 3 kittens all along because this family clearly takes turns at a kill and one very obviously is not collared! He seems like a healthy male, and now that these cats have left their mother to make their own kills we may only occasionally see him with his mother. . . . A #throwbackthursday of Neebati with her cubs in December 2017 at Naboisho Conservancy. Out of the four, two males survived and successfully dispersed. Our @marapredatorconservation Programme last sighted them during their 2019 intensive monitoring session moving to Serengeti. Neebati recently brought up four males to independence who dispersed in July this year. They saw her a few weeks ago in Olare Motorogi Conservancy and she is probably pregnant or looking for males to mate with. - @kenyawildlifetrust on Instagram

Essa semana tivemos uma notícia muito triste, a anta Eva foi atropelada em uma estrada de terra por um motociclista, e dias depois foi encontrada morta.😥💔 Felizmente o motociclista não se machucou gravemente. O filhote da Eva, que já tem oito meses de idade, não foi atingido. Estamos botando pontos de alimentação reforçada por onde a Eva circulava com o filhote, vamos monitorá-lo com maior atenção agora. O atropelamento de animais silvestres é um grande problema no mundo todo, estima-se que 475 milhões de animais silvestres são atropelados por ano só nas estradas do Brasil. No caso de animais de grande porte como as antas, esses atropelamentos podem causar acidentes graves. Respeitar os limites de velocidade e dirigir com atenção redobrada em estradas próximas à áreas naturais são meios de evitar esse tipo de acidente. Estamos providenciando, com apoio da prefeitura de Cachoeiras de Macacu, REGUA e Projeto Guapiaçu, redutores de velocidade e sinalização para a estrada próxima à REGUA, para reduzir a chance de novos acidentes. Eva foi a primeira anta fêmea a ser reintroduzida na REGUA, viveu livre por quase três anos e deixou dois filhotes na natureza. Quando chegou ficava muito tranquila perto de pessoas, mas depois de solta, em poucos meses, ficou arisca e não se aproximava de ninguém, como uma anta selvagem. Estabeleceu seu território entre a REGUA e outras propriedades rurais, andava quase sempre junto da anta Valente, pai do seu filhote. Se adaptou plenamente à vida livre, como se nunca tivesse vivido em cativeiro. 💚💚💚 Aprendemos muito com a anta Eva e estamos muito tristes com a sua morte. Consola saber que teve uma boa vida livre, e que a reintrodução da Eva ajudou a acumular experiencia para a reintrodução de outras antas na natureza. This weeks black bear death on I-65 demonstrates need for wildlife corridors and safe crossing designs. ⠀ ⠀ A black bear was killed by a motor vehicle Tuesday morning crossing I-65 south of Louisville. Black bear are rare in central Kentucky. This accident demonstrates the need to establish wildlife corridors with protected natural land to allow bear, bobcat and other animals to move safely about in their search for food, shelter, and mates. ⠀ ⠀ Highways and other congested roads designed and built with culverts, underpasses, and wildlife overpasses keep transportation infrastructure from being death traps for mammals, reptiles and other creatures. Over 6,000 motor vehicle collisions with animals reported in Kentucky in 2018/2019, resulted in 6 people killed and 24 seriously injured. Designing roadways and highways to accommodate wildlife movement will save money and lives. ⠀ ⠀ Bernheim is proud of our efforts to establish protected wildlife corridors.
