There are two types of lifeboat releasing mechanisms- on load and offload. These mechanisms release the boat from the davit, which is attached to a wire or fall by means of a hook. By releasing the hook the lifeboat can be set free to propel away from the ship. Offload mechanism: The offload mechanism releases the boat after the load of the boat is transferred to water or the boat has been lowered fully into the sea. There is a hydrostatic piston unit provided at the bottom. the piston is connected to the operating lever via a link. As the ship becomes waterborne, the water pressure will move the hydrostatic piston up. The piston will continue to move up, pushing the lever and as a result, it will operate the hook arrangement releasing the fall wire. There is a safety pin arrangement provided near the clutch box, which disables the offload release (in case of rough weather or hydrostatic piston malfunction) allowing the operator to perform onload release of the lifeboat. Come July 9th of 1931, the second Vainamoinen class coastal defense ship of the Finnish Navy is launched, she is Ilmarinen! She weighs in at 3,900 tons, has a length of 305 feet (93 meters), and can make a modest 14.5 knots; armed with four 10 inch, eight 4 inch guns, and an assortment of AA weapons. Overall Ilmarinen has a peaceful career through the 1930s, her crew making visits to neighboring Scandanavian countries and other ports within Finland. The time not being spent on voyage or doing maintenance aboard is spent with playing cards and such-like games. There is one occasion in 1934 into the evening when Ilmarinen comes aground while underway to Vaasa. No.2 engine room is ruptured and she develops a list to port, worse still is the warship’s pumps cannot pump out the water faster than it was flooding. Due to this Vaasa sent in the coast guard to assist Ilmarinen and she’s taken in for repairs at Suomenlinna. By the end of November in 1939, the USSR invades Finland after demands over territorial gain fail. Ilmarinen, for her part, steams for Aland Islands to provide military supplies and support should they too be invaded. The natural ally to Finland finds itself in defense of the Island once ice begins to form further the conflict drags on into winter. Ilmarinen and her sister are better found useful for AA cover for the city of Turku against Soviet air raids. Some of the air raids see close calls for Ilmarinen, on December 25th she is near missed off the stern which causes minor flooding and kills one crewman from splinters. Although Finland lost the Winter War, a chance came to regain the lost land from Russia in June of 1941 when they join Germany in Operation Barbarossa. Ilmarinen and her sister, on July 12th, make for Hanko in support of Finnish troops to bombard the Soviet forces there. Specifically the air field is shelled, this being the first time Ilmarinen fires her main guns in anger. The warship doesn’t see much action between then and the beginning of September that year. Silhouettes — Haven’t done one of these in a while. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. Yamashiro would go on to become the last battleship to be defeated in battle by enemy battleships, succumbing to torpedo and gunfire damage at the Battle of Surigao Strait. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

The north end of Assateague Island has been moving westward at an accelerated pace since the Ocean City jetties were constructed in 1934. But did you know that a partnership between the National Park Service, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and local government agencies known as the North End Restoration Project is in place to help slow the roll of the north end? Sediment starvation on the south side of the Ocean City inlet had more than doubled the rate of shoreline erosion along the northern 11 miles of Assateague since 1934. To mitigate impacts of the loss of natural sand transport processes, a two phase restoration plan that was initiated in 2002. In the first phase, the USACE conducted a one-time beach renourishment project that widened the Assateague beach south of the inlet. This replaced about 15% of the sand that was captured by the inlet since 1934. In 2004, the second, long-term phase of the restoration plan began. Since then, each year, twice a year in the spring and fall, a dredge vessel moves sand from the offshore shoals and from within the inlet channel itself into the nearshore area along northern Assateague Island. During the next week or so, keep an eye out for the USACE vessel CURRITUCK as it works on the north end of the island. The dredge will remove approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand from the inlet and offshore shoals and deposit it closer to the beach just south of the inlet on the Assateague side. From here, Mother Nature lends a hand by moving the sand up on to the beaches all along the shoreline. This project has successfully reduced the accelerated erosion rates to pre-inlet conditions. Keep in mind that the intent of the sand by-pass project is not to create a fixed-width beach or to stop erosion completely, but rather to mitigate the impacts of the jetties, slow the un-natural erosion rate, and allow natural coastal processes to continue within the national seashore. August 30, 1943. A special day at Portsmouth Navy Yard as two brand new fleet boats are prepared for launching on the same morning. Balao-class boats USS BANG(SS-385) and USS PILOTFISH(SS-386). USS BANG would be credited by JANAC with 8 ships sunk for 20,181 tons. She would be transferred to Spain in 1972, and scrapped in 1983 after a long career. USS PILOTFISH wouldnt be credited with any sinkings in her five war patrols, however, she did perform life guard duty on many occasions, performing well in this capacity. She would hold the distinction of participating in the official surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. This was probably the height of PILOTFISHs career. She just never seemed able to pick up the scent trail of a target worth a torpedo. Herself would be deemed a target worth an atomic bomb in 1946, serving as a target for Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. Japanese pride: The Battleship Musashi Codenamed Battleship Number 2, the battleship Musashi was one of the two Yamato class BB, often overlooked by her sister. Designed in 1937, the ship was massive, with guns calibers forbidden by the Washington treaty, and with the capability of fighting against several ships at the time. The general concept of it was that this ship would be so powerful, that Japan would equilibrate the naval battle by this type of ships, against the industrial capacity of the United States (yet, we would later discover why this concept was wrong and why after Midway the Yamato Class became kind of useless). The ship was constructed on top secrecy, avoiding the detection of it by the foreign powers. Under the same secrecy it was built, the ship was successfully launched on Nov 1st, 1940. Some modifications were made to the ship, and, after the little delay, it was commissioned on may of 1942 for trials. During its time in Kure on July 1943 (where it was sent and designed as Yamamotos flagship), it was modified and 4 Type 22 fire control radars were installed. Between 5 Aug 1943 and 10 Feb 1944, Musashi remained mostly in port at Truk; the only sortie she embarked upon was the Oct 1943 movement to Brown Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands in response to a possible American invasion of Wake Island and raids against the Gilbert Islands. After losing lot of equipment she was carrying to Palau to a typhoon, the ship was hit by 1 torpedo fired by an US submarine. After reaching Kure, it was repaired and were added several guns. On 18 Oct, Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita engaged in Operation Sho-Go by taking a powerful surface fleet that included both of the Yamato-class battleships. The fleet sailed into the Sibuyan Sea west of Leyte of the Philippine Islands, aiming to hit the vulnerable American transports on the other side of the island. On 24 Oct 1944, an aircraft from carrier USS Intrepid spotted the fleet. By 1018, Musashis lookouts reported about 30 incoming hostile aircraft. #TBT - 21 years ago this month, Crowleys tug Sea Victory towed the aircraft carrier ex-USS Oriskany from Vallejo, California, around the southern tip of South American via the Strait of Magellan to Beaumont, Texas, as it was too large to fit through the Panama Canal. The 112-day, 15,153-mile tow for the U.S. Navy marked one of the longest in Crowley history. The voyage was completed on schedule, on budget, and without a single lost-time accident or mechanical failure. How Carthage lost the 1st War with Roma - Part 1 The First Punic War (264 to 241 BC) was the first of three wars fought between ancient Carthage and the Roma Republic, the two great powers of the Western Mediterranean. In the longest continuous conflict and greatest naval war of antiquity, the two powers struggled for 23 years for supremacy, primarily on the Mediterranean island of Sicily and its surrounding waters and islands, but also in North Africa and even in the South of Italy. The war began in 264 BC when the Romans answered to a request of help by the Marmetines who were a group of mercenaries who had captured the city of Messana by treachery and raided many cities in Sicily after that. Defeated by Hiero II (a tyrant of Syracuse) at the Longanus River and in a dire situation, they called for help from a nearby fleet from Carthage, which established a garrison in Messana. Seing this, the Syracuse forces retreated, not wishing to confront the Carthaginians. Uncomfortable under the Carthaginian protection, the Marmetines appealed to Rome to be allowed into the protection of the Roman people. At first, the Romans did not wish to come to the aid of soldiers who had unjustly stolen a city from its rightful owners but the prospect of enrichment from the gains of war and stopping Carthaginian expansion over Sicily that could eventually be a threath to the South of Italy changed their minds and they accepted an alliance with the Marmetines. Ironically, Roma had recently punished a Rhegion garrison composed of soldiers with similar origin as the Marmetines that had expelled the original Rhegion citizens. In response, Syracuse allied itself with Carthage. With Rome and Carthage brought into conflict, the Syracuse/Marmetine conflict quickly escalated into the First Punic War. ON THIS DAY… in 1916, Yelcho arrived into Punta Arenas in Chile. Onboard the vessel was the crew who had left England with Ernest Shackleton two years earlier, 22 of whom had been stranded on Elephant Island for 137 days, with little to keep them going other than the belief that their leader would one day return to rescue them. On 30 August 1916, that day came. - The Yelcho rescue was all the more impressive given that the vessel was deemed unfit for purpose prior to departure; her steel-built steamer was not strengthened against the thick ice and she had no proper heating system. On 31 January 2008 she was hit by a wave that caused her cargo to shift and she beached at Blackpool, very close to the boundary with Cleveleys. Large amounts of the ships cargo was spilled overboard after the ship ran aground, resulting in much of it being salvaged by members of the public.
