This is the Jharokha at the Palace (Maharawal Palace) or the Gaj Vilas, Jaisalmer. It has 90 peacocks with necklace around their neck. Carving has been done right through the stone. One can well imagine the skill required for carving such piece. One wrong chiesel and the entire piece would be waste. Sanchi Torso/Avalokiteshvara c. 900 Madhya Pradesh Sandstone The beautiful sculpture was found at Sanchi during the excavations of western gateway of Sanchi Stupa in 1883. For a very long time, its identification remained uncertain until a similar figure was found which was identified as Bodhisattva Maitreya. This helped to recognize this sculpture as that of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Both the figures must have flanked a Budda image on either side in a temple setting. The torso appears to wear a waistcloth, the border of the upper hem being ornamented with a foliated scroll. There is a girdle with small kirti-mukha clasp, the upper band being engraved with small birds, elephants, rosettes and other conventional motifs. Other details include a broad jewelled necklace with small bell-pendants and a skin of the Black Buck (krishnajina) worn over the left sholder, passing across the body and round the right side. New spot on our Hidden California site! During one of our annual Hidden CA roadtrips, we hiked to one of the most curious phenomenons. Located alongside a reservoir is what appears to be an unearthed kingdom from the ancient days. Strange pillar formations tower along the shoreline, twisting 20 feet high. It would not seem unlikely to assume this was a man-made structure, but it’s not! These columns had actually been hidden for over a billion years before the reservoir’s pounding waves began carving them back out. Researchers determined that the structures were created by a combination of cold water dripping down and steam rising out of hot volcanic ash, then spewed by a cataclysmic explosion 760,000 years ago. They are an astounding product of a natural experiment in the physics of hydrothermal convection. The columns began forming by snow seeping into the hot tuff, thus boiling and creating evenly-spaced convection cells similar to heat pipes. X-rays were able to prove that tiny spaces in the convection pipes were bonded together by erosion-resistant minerals. It is believed that as many as 5,000 of these columns exist within a 2-3 sq. mile radius of the lake. On this day that year(1999) , I can’t but help think of how the officers and men of 2 Raj Rif would’ve felt? Was there an eerie silence? An uncomfortable emotion. Bitter sweet? They had captured Knoll, but at what cost? Three officers and many other men were now sleeping peacefully to never wake up. Meeting the officers and men, in other words; some of the survivors of the war of 2 Raj Rif was perhaps the most emotional part of my journey with #VijyantatKargil. None of them shed a tear. In fact most of them smiled, but I couldn’t help but think long and hard about the pain behind their eyes, once I would sit back in the car to go back. For isn’t that what a soldier always does, despite the emotion he may harbor: SMILE. Col. Praveen Tomar: was one of the first people I met. Since he was in Bombay. Robin and him had been coursemates. Not only did he very graciously invite me to sit and chat in his rather impressive office, he did so patiently with a smile for hours. While we sat, I saw the sun shifting from right into my face, to a soft retreating glow, as he told me of all the ‘fun’ they had together while at war. He told me of Robin’s innocence, their camraderie and the ‘debt’. The ‘debt’ that remained unpaid till date. Somehow, it has never left my thoughts. Brig Kala: was perhaps most generous with not just his hospitality, but also his time. He spent not one, but two back to back days with me, with Hav. Dan Singh on Day 2, tirelessly and rather patiently explaining both the battles that Robin was a part of. But the last story he told me, touched my heart. He spoke of how, once it ended, he stood next to the fallen heroes, saw their faces and swallowed the relentless lump that wouldn’t leave his throat. As their senior, his pain wasn’t just for a subordinate, he spoke of the ‘boys’ as if they were his sons. To witness their fights and their sacrifice the way he did, hadn’t been easy. O primeiro incidente aconteceu entre o paulista Jerônimo Pedroso de Barros e o reino (português) Manuel Nunes Viana, em Caeté. A nomeação do emboaba Manuel Nunes Viana como Governador das minas irritou os paulistas, pois se sentiram lesados, começando, então, violentos choques: atacados pelos Emboabas e chefiadas por Bento do Amaral Coutinho, junto ao Rio das Mortes, depois de resistirem, os paulistas cercados se renderam, mas foram traídos. 🇮🇱 Tel Beer Sheva is an archaeological site in southern Israel believed to be the remains of the biblical town of Beersheba. 🔹The most ancient finds date back to the 4th millennium BC, but the settlement was abandoned for about two thousand years and re-populated in the 11th century BC. 🔹The main structures of the site date back to the 9th-8th centuries BC and were built by the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Judah. 🔹The settlement was rebuilt three times until it was finally destroyed at 701 BC during the attack of the Babylonians. 🔹During its heyday, ancient Beer Sheva was a well-fortified small city with 60 residential buildings, in which approximately 500 people lived. 🔹In 2007, Tel Beer Sheva was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 🔹The site includes several buildings of later periods: Hellenistic, Roman and early Arab, but most of the buildings in Tel Beer Sheba were built in the Iron Age (see map (photo №6)). Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed, Emir of #Kuwait, has passed away, aged 91. . “With great sadness and sorrow, we mourn … the death of the late Sheikh Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait,” State news agency KUNA reported. . Sheikh Sabah was admitted to hospital in the United States in July following surgery for an unspecified condition in Kuwait that same month. . Babylon بابل Babylon was a key kingdom in ancient Mesopotamia from the 18th to 6th centuries BC. The name-giving capital city was built on the Euphrates river and divided in equal parts along its left and right banks. Babylon was originally a small Akkadian town dating from the period of the Akkadian Empire c. 2300 BC. The Amorite king Hammurabi created a short-lived empire in the 18th century BC, he built Babylon up into a major city and declared himself its king, and southern Mesopotamia became known as Babylonia. After being destroyed and then rebuilt by the Assyrians, Babylon became the capital of the short lived Neo-Babylonian Empire from 609 to 539 BC. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. After the fall of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, the city came under the rule of the Achaemenid, Seleucid, Parthian, Roman, and Sassanid empires. It has been estimated that Babylon was the largest city in the world c. 1770 – c. 1670 BC, and again c. 612 – c. 320 BC. It was perhaps the first city to reach a population above 200,000. Estimates for the maximum extent of its area range from 890 to 900 hectares. The remains of the city are in present-day Hillah, Babil Governorate, Iraq, about 85 kilometres south of Baghdad, comprising a large tell of broken mud-brick buildings and debris.
