A story about Cam Newton: With everyone analyzing how to define success for Cam in New England, and his legacy in Charlotte, I want to share a story about Cam off the field. I have a friend, Becky Hughes. Becky is a former NASCAR driver publicist, and the mom of two sons — Elijah and Sam. Elijah, the older of the two boys, battled cancer before passing away in 2015, at age 10. But before he passed, he got a telephone call from Cam. Becky went to Auburn, and a connection on The Plains informed Cam of Elijah’s illness. They discussed girls and sports, favorite foods and games and whatnot. Well, during this hourlong conversation, Elijah invited Cam to a party. Elijah’s favorite holiday was Halloween, and there was some fear he would not make it to see Oct. 31. He was very ill. So his neighborhood decided to celebrate Halloween in September. Cam told Elijah he’d check his schedule. Sure enough, come party night the following weekend, folks came running down the street to inform Becky and Elijah that Cameron Newton was indeed at the party. And not only was he at the party, he remembered every one of Elijah’s favorite foods and games. Huge silver platters of shrimp and steak and macaroni and cheese. Elijah loved Papa John’s brownies. Cam had 30 boxes delivered. He also brought an ice cream truck for the whole neighborhood. He got out of the car and began pushing Elijah up and down the street in his wheelchair. Elijah was very weak. Everyone clamored for Cam’s time. He told everyone he wanted to hang with Elijah first. He stayed for hours, played games and signed more than 100 autographs. After Elijah passed, Becky took some of his ashes to places that Elijah most loved. He’d always wanted to attend the Iron Bowl, but passed away before he got the chance. So Becky and Sam took a small vial of his ashes to the 50 yard line at Jordan Hare Stadium, before the Iron Bowl, and left them. Cam was at the game. He saw Becky and Sam. And he immediately walked over and hugged them. Becky told me today: “He’s such a class act. I don’t care what color jersey he’s wearing, he will always be so special to our family.” - @martysmithespn on Instagram
