Jay-Z, photographed at the launch party for the first Rocawear line, held at the Altman Building in New York City on July 28, 1999. There were hundreds at the reception celebrating Roc-A-Fella Records newest business move, including fashion influentials, Timbaland and model Beverly Peele. Having a clothing brand was always part of Roc-A-Fella dynasty plan, with discussions on its implementation beginning back in 94. The initial plan had been to make shirts under the brand name Crew Love; with the promotion built on the labels main ethos: We shouldnt let anyone make money off us, and we shouldn’t give free advertising with our lifestyle. Since 95 brands such as ENYCE and Phat Farm had given Jay merchandise or signed him to short-term sponsorship deals. During this time Hov, Dame Dash and Kareem Biggs Burke were also wearing a lot of Iceberg clothing—an Italian knitwear company that had recently branched into streetwear. Roc-A-Fella recognized Jay’s commercial pull, and believed they were largely responsible for Iceberg’s record sales. I would be onstage performing, and I noticed all the kids were wearing Iceberg, Hov told WWD in 2009. They had on the same clothes I had worn. We thought, Why should we let Iceberg get all this business when we can do it ourselves? Firstly they set up a meeting with Iceberg executives to explore a partnership—hoping to walk away with a hefty deal and the chance to design their own line. We went there with a plan to have our own line with them. We were gonna bring them into this culture, which was on the rise, Jay reminisced in WWD. But in the end it didnt work out. We were naïve and asked for way too much. As well as a large amount of money, the Roc requested unlimited use of the companys private jet. Dash would later say that he felt the vibe with the company was that they werent sure if they wanted to touch hip-hop, or have us represent them. We said Yo, we feel weve tripled your sales. Help us to do our own clothing company, or at least pay us to represent you. But they werent interested.
