GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN #24 N E Brotchie Pharmacy 21 Keys Street, Beaumaris Beaumaris’s enviable legacy of mid-century buildings is not just all about houses… there were churches, school buildings, banks, public halls… and Norm Brotchie’s chemist shop in Keys Road. The son of a pharmacist, Norm’s career arc was firmly predestined. Qualifying as a chemist in the early 1950s, we went soon had designs on a pharmacy of his very own. He eyed a potential location far south across the river, down Beaumaris way. Keys Street had already burgeoned as a local retail hotspot by the mid-1950s, when Norm Brotchie engaged Peter McIntyre to design stylish new premises at No 21. The young architect rose effortlessly to the occasion with that you see before you: a simple edifice with recessed window-wall giving way to an interior with fantastically futuristic furniture and an eye-popping ceramic mural of overscaled pharmaceutical paraphernalia. Norm Brotchie’s Keys Street pharmacy remained a hallowed local dispensary for years and years… it was still running in the 1970s, after Norm opened a second outlet on the East Concourse. While the original shop was later converted into a medical centre, the mural was at least partly preserved and remained a nifty snippet of mid-century public art until its regretful obliteration in 2007. El Monte Legion Stadium - Originally built in 1927 as the gymnasium for the old El Monte High School campus , the stadium is most famous for hosting the dances that would serve as inspiration for the song “Memories of El Monte” written by Frank Zappa and performed by The Penguins. The stadium remained mostly unused once the new El Monte High campus opened on Tyler Ave. and welcomed the class of 1940. The American Legion purchased the stadium in 1945 and renamed it “El Monte Legion Stadium” From 1945 through the mid 1950’s the stadium hosted a wide range of events: basket ball games, wrestling, boxing, roller derby’s, and even mini car races. The stadium reached the apex of it’s popularity when legendary disc Jockey Art Laboe brought his Oldies But Goodies dances to El Monte. At the time city ordinances and regulations in Los Angeles did not allow large gatherings of young people under the age of 18. The stadium was a perfect venue, close enough to Los Angeles but outside of the city limits and not subject to Los Angeles ordinances. Art Laboe’s dances at the Legion we’re extremely popular. Crowds of young people from different backgrounds and ethnicities from all over the southland were brought together by their love of dancing and music. Some notable acts that performed at the stadium: Jerry Lee Lewis, The Penguins, Rosie and The Originals, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, and Richie Valens. By the 1960’s The young crowds moved on the the booming sunset strip and Los Angeles proper. The stadium remained in operation hosting smaller events. In 1973 the US Postal Service purchased the stadium property to build a new post office. The stadium was torn down on Friday the 13th 1974. The Union Walk townhome development currently sits at the former site of the stadium at Valley and Ramona Blvd. A small fountain and plaque in front of the development memorializes the history that the Stadium made in EL Monte. - @elmonte.captured on Instagram

The 9/11 Memorial in Havelock was dedicated in 2011, on the 10 year anniversary of the attacks. The centerpiece is a beam from the World Trade Center, that helps to serve as a reminder for all of the sacrifices that occurred that day. —————————————- 📷: havenews.com —————————————- #ncdailydose #northcarolina #nchistory #september11 #havelock - @nc_daily_dose on Instagram
