She seemed somewhat miserable last night... so I knew we’d better check the cameras regularly. 🙈 - - I woke up at 3:30 am, she was restless... but no babies. I checked again at 4:00 am and there were already 3 nursing! 🙌🏻 - - I already knew she was a great mama, and she showed me just that again this time around. - Resting after a hard day of causin trouble
Following a report of a painted dogs den sighting in Sinamatela, our trackers Washington Moyo and Lephius Muyuni went to check it out. Behold, its the Lukodet pack and Didi, the alpha female, is denning! The pack has been off the radar for a while and tracking inside the park hasn’t been as frequent due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. We suspect this is probably the packs second den or so. Painted dogs normally move their pups to a new den site a few times during the denning period to avoid detection by other predators in the area that could pose a threat to the pack and the pups. Another reason is to avoid or reduce parasite infestations. The pups will stay at a den until they are about 4 months old. This is when they are big and strong enough to move with the pack. Unfortunately, the team did not catch a glimpse of the pups or get closer to the den as they were avoiding disturbing the site. Didi and other pack members were also jealously guarding the site against all sides. Last year Didi had a litter of 11 pups and 13 pups in 2018, though not all survived in both litters. We are happy the pack is well and growing even bigger and stronger. The last time we saw the Lukodet they were 16 strong. I’m sitting here in bed going through these photos of them on my Instagram and I feel so far away from them now. I want to go back & sit with her, just hold her & cry because I don’t know how to save her You have no idea how it feels going into this darkness, seeing them like this. Scroll back up & really look at her, look at her eyes & her babies...are we really doing this to them? I have literally died inside. I’ll never feel real happiness while they are suffering, I can feel them in my soul every minute of the day, behind every “happy moment” all my jokes & laughs, she’s there. All of them are, sitting so heavy inside my chest. I’ve said this for years & it’s still the same, even though I appear happier now, I’ll never leave the darkness. My friend told me a few months ago that my ex Jessie messaged him while we were together saying “I’ve lost her bro, she’s gone into the darkness from this & she’s not coming back” hearing that really hit me I did mushrooms once to try & release some of this, because seeing a psychologist just doesn’t help, they really just don’t get it. During the trip I was hanging off my bed crying in so much pain, my friend was telling me it’s ok to let go now, that I can’t carry all of this but I can still fight for them. I was crying hysterically saying no into my pillow curled up “I’m staying with them” If I leave the darkness it means I’ve let go of them. I refuse to just get on with my life. That’s why I keep going back If you haven’t been inside & met them like this you will never understand what if feels like. The suffering in the air as you walk toward these sheds. Opening the door & seeing all of them. I can’t smell the night air without thinking of them now There is a real darkness in this world & it’s us, we are doing this to them by choice. We have chosen to be evil, allow the industry to hide them away, package their bodies & feed us lies. I refuse to let them win. This needs to end. I don’t know why anyone would be ok with paying for this to happen to someone else. This is her life, this is her soul, her body. Who are we to do this. Animals know. They can see kindness, and they seek it. Gary and Sara have had a few new arrivals to the sanctuary, some baby wombats and Amy the Cobargo Wee Wallaby. These cuties will receive a lot of love and care from them until they are sent out to other shelters. The wombats will go to an unaffected (by fire) shelter until they are a little older and will then return to Gary and Sara as this is his/her home. The mothers of these orphans will have taught their babies the layout of the land. Where to find the best feed and where to find water. They will not forget what their mothers taught them. Without a steady supply of water, keeping these darling bush babies long term is not feasible so Amy the wallaby is heading off to another carer shortly who has another wallaby the same age. This will offer company and comfort to the babies. Water is necessary for making bottles, washing pouches and basic linen items required to keep bush babies warm and clean. This is why a water tank is high on Gary and Saras priority list. A tank is still a little while off as they work through some challenges to get it delivered, but the wheels of progress are moving slowly. Happy World Snake Day! Today we celebrate by spotlighting one of the largest snakes seen here at Pedernales Falls, the Western Coachwhip! Measuring in at 7 to 8 feet long, these non-venomous snakes can be found across much of Texas, preferring to live in grassy/dry areas. They feed on rodents, lizards, frogs, and even other large snakes! The Coachwhip can be found with various colorations, from red to tan to brown, and all share the same woven leather pattern and shiny texture. This reminds many of the woven leather whips that stagecoach drivers would use, hence the name Coachwhip! Just like with any wild animal, give these snakes plenty of space. While not deadly to humans, the coachwhip can live up to its name and swing its sharp teeth wildly at anything threatening it. They usually keep to themselves however and serve a key roll in our ecosystem. They keep rodent populations low, while also serving as food for large predators like hawks and eagles. We can’t save them all. That’s just a fact at a rescue such as this. Sometimes we get there too late, sometimes they are simply too sick for us to save, and sometimes, even after they’ve started healing, their body succumbs to the horrors it faced before we found them. We are deeply saddened to say that Sehrai passed away on Thursday night. When she was found a few weeks ago, Sehrai was on the brink of death. She was skin and bones with barely enough energy to carry herself. But thankfully she was taken in and well cared for. She was given food, water a safe place to recover and a lot of love. She was doing incredibly well: eating, drinking, healing. We were so impressed at how well she was doing, and then one evening, she was gone. Just like that. With no warning. It’s possible that her body could no longer handle the previous abuse it had endured, or maybe she had an underlying illness we didn’t know about. Whatever the cause, Sehrai has crossed the Rainbow Bridge to be with the others. And while we are saddened at her passing, we can rest in the knowledge that she was one of the lucky few who knew the love of a human, even if only for a few short weeks. Rest In Peace Sehrai. Sea Otters fall into the animal family #Mustelidae - the weasel family! #cute . A taxonomic grouping that also includes ya’lls favorite badgers, weasels, ferrets, martens, minks, and wolverines. Within Mustelidae is the subfamily #Lutrinae which contains all of the 13 extant (living) species of otters. Then within Lutrinae you have eight extant and remaining Genera (Lutra, Hydrictis, Lutrogale, Lontra, Pteronura, Amblonyx, Aonyx, and Endyra [as seen above!]). Don’t those sound like #Pokemon ? Every year, thousands of pangolins are trafficked from Cambodia onto neighboring Vietnam and China. Their scales are used in traditional medicine and their meat is eaten as part of the insidious bushmeat trade. This Sunda pangolin was recently rescued by our Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team, one of more than 400 rescued by our team from the illegal wildlife trade. Despite increased protections, #pangolin scale seizures are at an all time high amidst the #COVID19 pandemic. A new report by the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, provides new data and details that show the trade in African pangolins to Asia for traditional medicine continues to grow. Last year, not only were more pangolin scales seized globally than in any other year for which data is available, but it also saw the biggest individual seizures of pangolin scales on record. Within a single week in April, Singapore intercepted a 14.2-ton shipment and a 14-ton shipment, estimated to be from more than 70,000 pangolins. Chris Hamley, senior pangolin campaigner for @EIAEnvironment, says illegal trade may have increased because as smugglers have shifted from Asian pangolins to African ones, there was an existing supply chain they could co-opt. “In Africa, there was already the bushmeat trade chains that have pangolins, and so it was almost like a natural byproduct,” Hamley says. Our first premmie flying fox of the season. Flying foxes usually give birth in spring and early summer so it wont be long until baby season is upon us. Last year we had terrible flowering over winter which led to a starvation event and an abnormally large intake of premmie babies. We do absolutely everything we can for these babies but unfortunately they do have a guarded prognosis. This year we have had beautiful flowering across our local area and there are lots of very fat and happy mums flying around at the moment. Today while moving skulls so I could dust, I came across the first skull I ever cleaned. This yellowed raccoon is the skull that got me started, the skull that made my husband think I was an absolute lunatic and the skull that taught me all the things you should NOT do while cleaning skulls. This raccoon was never fully degreased, I lost some of its teeth, it has broken bones and it has some discolouration because I couldn’t bring myself to do the gross work so I just buried it for a few months which actually mummified it and I ended up having to do the gross work anyways. It’s a funny looking little skull that sits on a shelf with some of the nicest, cleanest and favourite skulls I have. Ive told the story of Bubbles and Squeak, but Ive been putting off telling the tale of Lazarus. TW: animal cruelty, poison. Lazarus and his brother were the first two rats Ive ever known and loved, even though our time together was so short. Lazarus and his brother were found in the dirt, covered with cockroaches. They were poisoned by their own mothers milk. Even in his last moments, Lazarus was searching for the comfort of his mother. He wasnt aggressive, he wasnt angry. He just wanted his mother. Please, consider humane methods of pest control. This is a plea on behalf of animals like Lazarus. One of the lucky pangolins that was recovered a couple of weeks ago was a large and heavily pregnant female who was later name Autumn because of the stunning colours of her scales. Autumn responded to her treatment well and was soon out foraging for ants on her nightly walks and picking up the weight that she had lost during in ordeal. Autumn has now begun the stage of her rehabilitation called soft release, where she has been released in an undisclosed location and will be closely monitored for the coming weeks to ensure that she continues to eat well and explore her new surroundings. As she is believed to be so close to the end of her pregnancy we are all waiting with baited breath to hear when the little one arrives. Providing her soft release goes well, mother and baby will then be able to continue their lives undisturbed by humans. Help us to keep helping them... It was really nice to pick up my paintbrush again to make something special for a friends birthday. Cost nothing but priceless nonetheless. I used Puer tea for this because we both love tea! Earth Culture. I have so many cherished memories around piñon. Memories of my Great Grandmothers table with a bowl of them for sharing. Memories of gathering them as a child with family. And most recently, gathering with my mother and fam before she transcended. Everytime i gather it’s like all the memories from past gatherings flood in. Its so beautiful. It feels good to be in that element of ancient. Im doing my best to pass this love on to my children. So that every time they gather in the future all of the past will come to them. A couple of our new patients today warrants a reminder. We are all enjoying the cooler temps and everyone loves a nice fire with these cooler evenings but please be mindful that the brush piles make great wildlife refuge. This Eastern cottontail was probably using the brush to hind from predators or possibly just sleeping. She did not know she would be burned out of her safe place. Yes, she is still alive, which amazing, but definitely needs prayers and good vibes sent her way. Please take the time to check the brush pile before lighting the flames. Visually examine, kick around it, and move or shake the limbs to run someone out. Then, this Eastern box turtle was supposedly found and brought to us because she has ocular discharge. In reality, she has multiple health issues because someone stole her from her natural habitat and provided poor nutrition and husbandry. She has severe metabolic bone disease, causing a deformed shell and limbs, along with bilateral ear abscess. Unfortunately, we dont know internally the damage she has suffered. But, we do know this does not happen in the wild and does not happen over night because Mother Nature provides what the wildlife needs. Humans keep interfering with the wildlife, not Mother Nature. So, remember it is illegal to keep wildlife as pets in most states and that you cannot mimic Mother Nature. Even experienced rehabbers have to try extra hard to provide what the wildlife needs and its not easy for us, so what makes you think you can do it and why you should deprive that animal of their natural habitat. Stop being selfish and hurting the wildlife.
