One of our distinguished #WSSUAlumni celebrated a major milestone birthday earlier this month. Gloria Banks shared with us that her big brother, Dr. Edward O. Happy belated birthday, Dr. Diggs Here is a picture of Edward O. Diggs and family, c. 1951. As we announced in April, our Black History Collection has been digitized by the USC Imaging & Media Lab to be made available online. The number of records on the site has grown from 100 to over 300 in the past six weeks, and that number will continue to grow as USC continues to upload the digitized artifacts in groups. This photo shows Reverend I. H. Hunt with First African Methodist Episcopal Church members on December 15, 1955 (BH-D-18-43). To view all of the photos currently available click the link in our bio. I’ve been taking about this since 2015 but the actual bombing happened on this day May 13th, 1985. the Philadelphia police department bombed a West Philadelphia neighborhood because the people living there were black liberals. Children and Adults were killed and no one has been held responsible. til this day. I remember walking pass this neighborhood to get to elementary school everyday and wondering what the hell happened... once I got older I finally looked into it. Back in June 2018 I went to check on the houses and saw that Philadelphia council woman was rebuilding the homes for gentrification purposes. it’s 2020 and I still feel like not enough people know about this. I wish I had a voice big enough to make change... today we remember and spread the fuckin word. #rememberMOVE - @madeinamiraca on Instagram

Today we would like to highlight the work of Kerry James Marshall. Kerry James Marshall was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 17, 1955. The March on Washington was a peaceful protest. It got the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed, and led to the Selma Voting Rights Movement and the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Let us *please* seek REAL justice for Floyd, and any other person who has been a victim of abuses of power. The only way to do this is by changing laws, raising money, winning the culture war and coming together as a COMMUNITY, not 🔥burning communities and inciting more hatred and violence. Violence, no matter how you attempt to justify it, only begets more violence. . This is not what “justice” looks like. Yet white kids on social media keep cheering on riots like a fashion trend for peer-group cool points, completely out of touch with real life consequences for people like this black man. Who will clean up the flaming rubble of people’s houses and POC businesses across our already divided country? We just leave the mess for our brothers and sisters to deal with, and leave many of them hospitalized? How does hurting your own team “teach the cops a lesson?” What does real change look like? Well, consider raising money for this guy (second photo) Korboi Balla on GoFundMe to pay back the damages, and volunteer to go clean all those cities. It’s the right thing to do- rather than the “trendy” thing. - @lancecourtney on Instagram

Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges was born on this day in 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. In 1960, Bridges and three other first-graders—Gail Etienne, Tessie Prevost, and Leona Tate—were the first Black students to attend formerly all-white public schools in New Orleans. Etienne, Prevost, and Tate attended McDonogh 19, while Bridges was the only student of any race to attend William Frantz between January and May 1961. Federal marshals accompanied all four students to protect them from angry, sometimes violent, protestors. Happy Birthday Ruby! It’s strange to feel young in your body yet old enough to have lived to witness such an ugly side of history repeat itself. “Things like this should only happen once in a human lifetime” you reason to yourself because as they say, we are clearly smart enough to learn from our mistakes. With age you begin to zoom out and see a bigger picture, not all at once, but in fractions. You also realize you will never see the image in its entirety because you exist in such a blip of time, a millisecond in the scale of human existence, that it would be physically impossible to see. Thoughts of discouragement follow, but fear not! You are a key helper in getting your species to the next step, to healing itself of its deep-rooted flaws. THIS is evolution my friend, and the growing pains have only just begun. You need proper physical and mental nourishment for the years to come and when your body can no longer regenerate its cells, you must to pass on the wisdom, kindness and respect for humanity you have garnered along the way. There is no room for hatred on our fragile planet. We are still a budding species, let’s see this through and see what magic lies ahead. Bandcamp is waiving fees today. Demand they do so for a month, for a year, until that disgrace of a human being is out of office, until we start to see real change. The purpose of the march was to draw attention to the civil and economic inequities faced by Black individuals in the United States, and advocate for change in these sectors. 250,000 people marched from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial in a historic rally for African-American rights. 🔸Simo Häyhä, the deadliest sniper of history🔸 🔸The Awakening of THE legend In 1925, Häyhä was drafted for a year of military service. He displayed his military prowess early on and after only one year had already advanced to the rank of Corporal. Later, Häyhä joined the Finnish Civil Guard and discovered his talent and passion for shooting. He reportedly spent all his free time outside practicing his shots. Eventually he could hit 16 targets per minute from 500 feet, making him ideal as a sniper in the war which was fast approaching. 🔸When the war broke out The Winter War began in Finland in 1939, when Russia took the opportunity to regain the territory that had once been theirs. The Russian army probably assumed that such a tiny country like Finland would be easy to take. What they didn’t count on was the Finnish concept of ‘sisu’, which roughly translates to ‘guts’ or ‘determination’. Häyhä’s skills were put to good use against such overwhelming odds. At one point, he and 31 other Finnish men faced off against 4000 Soviet soldiers. 🔸The White Death Though the Winter War lasted only around 100 days, Häyhä managed 500 confirmed kills during that time, and his unofficial total may be as high as 800, a record which has yet to be matched. His personal best was 40 confirmed kills in a single day. Häyhä managed this thanks to military tactics that were unheard of at the time. Dressing in white camouflage allowed him to blend in with the winter scenery and he only carried a day’s worth of supplies, so that he wouldn’t be weighed down. He piled up snow banks around himself for concealment and put snow in his mouth to prevent his breath from giving him away. Rejecting more modern and advanced models, he used his own gun (a Finnish Sako Mosin-Nagant Model 28-30 rifle) with an iron sight instead of a scope, as he claimed that scopes could catch glare from sunlight and be spotted by enemy snipers. He knew his gun well enough to maintain it even during one of the coldest Finnish winters on record. Partner: @the_irish_historian - @the_eyes_of_history on Instagram

At this time humanity is in great crisis, Madiba. People are in fear of the coronavirus, the climate crisis, deepening inequality, the election to power of fascist governments in the most unlikely places, and much more... But, the good news is people are still standing up in resistance under these tremendous difficulties; from the #BlackLivesMatter movement in the US, to the #FeministVoices, to the #IndigenousRights movement, to young people fighting for #ClimateAction all around the world. On this day, I am happy to celebrate your legacy and find inspiration in your words to keep fighting to achieve the impossible. #MandelaDay2020 #ActionAgainstPoverty @nelsonmandelafoundationsa @amnesty @greenpeace @africans_rising @afpentertainment @associatedpresscheck @reuters - @kuminaidoo on Instagram

Whether enslaved or free, of limited means or privileged backgrounds, African Americans—like so many Americans—viewed education as the key to changing their status. Communities banded together to build and support schools and parents sacrificed to send their children far from home. Despite various obstacles, African Americans sought education—from the basics to higher intellectual pursuits—that established a lasting legacy of achievement.   Desks used by students in a Rosenwald co-funded school in Pomaria, South Carolina are part of our Museums collection. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1961, President John F. Kennedy signed legislation that established the Peace Corps as a permanent government agency. Kennedy described the new organization as an army of civilian volunteers-teachers, engineers, agricultural scientists, etc. – who would be sent to underdeveloped nations in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and elsewhere to assist the people of those regions. He hoped that by improving the lives of people in less developed countries, they would become more resistant to the charms of communism and be convinced of America’s sincerity and ability to help them. Some members of Congress saw it as an expensive public relations ploy wrapped in a new ribbon. The program turned out to have a popular appeal. History and perspective from @jamiefordofficial ⠀ I know a few people who dismiss ideas on defunding the police or fundamentally reimagining public safety as new, radical, and even dangerous — it’s easy to do if we’ve never been exposed to the writings of Angela Davis, the views of those who undertook the Journey of Reconciliation, or historic examples like the one outlined here. There are also those who think the concept of defunding just needs to be “renamed”, as if it’s a branding issue, and call it “diverting funds to other social alternatives” or something else. (Catchy, right?) ⠀ ⠀ No. The research is there. The information is there. The momentum is finally here. For those of us that waited too long to read up, we have no excuses anymore. ⠀ ⠀ #blacklivesmatter - @seemeggrow on Instagram

Priest Truth Washington, D.C. 2020 . . . Priest Truth was such an amazing soul to meet doing my time in D.C. Priest Truth approached us in Walmart when she noticed the cameras around our necks. She asked What yall taking pictures of? We tell her what we doing and that were from NYC. She tells us we should take her picture because shes going to be famous and that the Lord told her that. She felt that the Good Lord sent her to us. She was so confident and I admired that. We separated in Walmart and then stumbled on her again in the deli aisle, with her hands on this gentlemens head, praying for him. I had to make that image! Had to! When she was done, she ended up running into me in the produce aisle and asked Are you in a rush? I tell her no and she says if you stick around after you leave, Ill play my harp for you. You guys can hear me sing. I sing opera. Now you know I was definitely sticking around for that. She said shell meet us right outside after we checkout. So we do just that. We approached her as she was taking her harp out the shopping cart. Shes showing us all the pieces and parts to it and then she begins. Singing beautifully. Im not the big church hymn guy but she did her thing and she did it well. We asked her if she would like a print or if she has an email. She politely said I dont need the pictures. I know what I look like. Give them out to people. Such a sweet lady. Such a kind soul. Such a great experience. Thank you, Priest Truth. - @coco.butter.shutter on Instagram

This newspaper cartoon was trying to humorously depict what I needed to do to be safe leaving my home after a friend and I were taken down at gunpoint by police. The shock of seeing that many guns trained on us, caused me to turn to my friend who had recently graduated from the same university to ask, are you wanted?. Incredulous, he looked wide eyed back at me and said ``No, are you?. We couldnt fathom what would warrant this many police cars and every officer on scene with gun drawn At one point handcuffed lying face down with my nose on streetcar tracks I turned my head to ask my friend if he was okay and the angry officer told us to shut the F.... up. I could hear the disappointment in their voices when all they could find in my car was my friends takeout chicken and fries. We were scared and confused and one wrong move on our part could have led to us being shot. Ive been thinking about the takedown this week and I am grateful we both escaped with our lives. We know so many others didn’t. You dont need to live in black skin to understand how horrific it is to watch the life forced out of another human being by the person society has appointed to protect them. I told my 13 year old I thought we were bringing her into a better world than my generation grew up in but I fear that is not the case. My 18 year old has inherited the activist streak and it will serve her well if she realizes her goal of becoming a lawyer. Its been a tough week. - @dwight_drummond on Instagram

“The right to vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool or instrument in a democratic society. We must use it.” Confrontation on the Bridge (1975), Jacob Lawrence (African-American, 1917-2000) DESCRIPTION When Jacob Lawrence was commissioned to execute a print to celebrate the United States bicentennial in 1976, he illustrated the March 7, 1965, march by unarmed protesters objecting to the denial of African Americans right to vote. The march began in Selma, Alabama, but before the 600 protesters could reach the state capital in Montgomery, law enforcement officials attacked them with clubs and tear gas as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge. John Lewis was the first to be beaten in the clash with state troopers, who cracked his skull with a billy club on the date that became known as “Bloody Sunday.” Lawrence symbolized the malicious and brutal attack by including the vicious dog at the left edge of the scene. Two days later, with court protection, Martin Luther King Jr. led 25,000 marchers to Montgomery. Outraged by the barbarity of the civil rights struggle, the U.S. Congress passed and President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act later that year. Lawrences strong colors and compact composition relay the intensity and injustice of the violence inflicted on the peaceful protesters. #clevelandvotes #clevotes #govote #rockthevote #rockthevote2020 #bidenharris2020 #clevelandmuseumofart #johnlewis #selma #voterrights - @dmcphcle on Instagram

#TheEncyclopediaOfInvisibility: At the age of six, Ruby Bridges (1954–), became a pioneer for the Civil Rights Movement. ⠀ ⠀ She was the youngest of six African Americans selected through testing to attend William Frantz Elementary, and the only one of the selected who decided to enroll in the all-white school in New Orleans. On November 14, 1960, escorted by marshals, she walked in, only to spend the bulk of her day in the principal’s office as parents began removing their children from the school. Barbara Henry taught Ruby for a year while a child psychologist named Robert Coles supported and counseled Ruby and her family during this period. ⠀ ⠀ Today, Ruby’s courage remains a source of inspiration. She continues to speak publicly about her perseverance and strength to this day. In 1999, she released her memoir, “Through My Eyes,” and established the Ruby Bridges Foundation, using education to promote tolerance and unity among schoolchildren. More recently, she published a children’s book, “Ruby Bridges Goes to School: My True Story” (2009). ⠀ ⠀ @TavaresStrachan’s artistic practice activates the intersections of art, science, and politics, offering uniquely synthesized points of view on the cultural dynamics of scientific knowledge. This week, Tavares shares the history of pivotal figures who inspire his work. ⠀ ⠀ #RubyBridges #TavaresStrachan - @mariangoodmangallery on Instagram

I realize I’ve posted my art once in the six months since I said I’d try to put more stuff out there, mostly because I’ve felt unmotivated when it came to my work. However, I felt compelled to do this one after experiencing an overwhelming amount of emotions and thoughts about both how I view racism and why I’ve never been vocal on this issue. Black people in America, really all people of color for that matter, have been treated as less than humans for far too long. Though I never consciously thought about this, my silence and lack of introspection both contribute to the problem. That ends today. I’m not the type of person to go march for something. I can draw though, so hopefully this sketch can contribute to the millions of posts and chime in with the millions of voices calling for the human race to come together and bring about some real change. It’s about time. #blacklivesmatter - @jbnky on Instagram

Too many of our elders fall prey to exploitation and abuse. What has been happening to Ms. Nichols both saddens and infuriates me. Her role as Lt. Uhura sparked my love of sci-fi and inspires me still - as it also does for countless others. Please use the link in my bio to learn more information and how you can help. And please help spread the word. Thank you. - Rod F. - @the7thmatrix on Instagram

To honor 100 years of the 19th Amendment and the ongoing work toward achieving equity, @LACountyArts collaborated with the @LACWGI to commission six artists to create commemorative artworks for the centennial. Today, we are sharing Resistance and Restitution by artist Moses X Ball (@mosestheartist). In it, Ball depicts five important Black women suffragists who fought for an intersectional vision linking race, class, and gender. Moses’ work declares that Ida B. Wells, Mary Church Terrell, Nannie H. Burroughs, Mary B. Talbert, and Frances E.W. Harper deserve proper recognition for their accomplishments with improving the lives of all women. A Jewish teaching says those who die just before the Jewish new year, are the ones God has held back until the last moment, bc they were needed most & were the most righteous. And so it was that #RBG died as the sun was setting last night marking the beginning of Rosh Hashanah. - @jews_of_ny on Instagram

This Thursday at 5 p.m. (PT), join us and @chicagofilmarchives for a free virtual screening of THE MURDER OF FRED HAMPTON (1971), a still incredibly relevant portrait of the Black Panther Party Illinois leader who lived by the words, “All power to all people.” He was killed at age 21 when officers raided his home in the early morning of December 4, 1969, an assault that also left fellow Party member Mark Clark dead and several others wounded. Post-film Q&A with Henry “Poison” Gaddis, Black Panther Party member and Executive Director of Hope and a Home; Lynn French, former Black Panther Party member; Flint Taylor, founding partner of the People’s Law Office; and Professor Jakobi Williams of Indiana University-Bloomington. RSVP link in bio. ------ Restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive in 2017 with funding provided by the National Film Preservation Foundation and The Packard Humanities Institute. #themurderoffredhampton #fredhampton #blackpantherparty #uclarestorations - @uclaftvarchive on Instagram
