There has been no retreat from our community despite being challenged by racists, white supremacists, corrupt police and government, ash falling from the sky, and the overwhelming fear that our homes, children and businesses could be next. ⠀ FMA: May 30th_Liberty_Morgue Bed_Gate, 2015⠀ The Drawing Center⠀ ⠀ A visual essay dedicated to immigrants, liberty and my fathers death on May 30th, 2015.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ I was in the midst of a project at The American Academy in Rome when he died. Within days, I returned to The Bronx to begin this work. It is biographical and historical, with a document titled Bull Romanus Pontifex (1454) by Pope Nicolas V at center focus. In the bull or holy letter, he would sanction Blacks to “perpetual enslavement thereby setting Europe towards a strong economic/tyrannical path as he made the Vatican a home for subsequent popes and Florence the nexus of the Italian Renaissance (he was a major patron of the arts--not surprising). All fostered by the trading of Black bodies and raw materials. Both are still integral parts of international commerce, just more systematized and removed from plain sight, most of the time. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ In this work, ideas of labor, liberty and death would be explored through the Statue of Liberty, hand trucks and a cast of my fathers death bed titled FMA:_Morgue Bed. I utilize refrigeration foam, a cooling fan and an ice tray dated to his birth date to make a headstone. The concrete--a labor material often used in Nigeria for construction acts as a binding agent and marker of industry.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ___________________________________ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ May 30th of this year marked the 5th anniversary of my fathers death and arguably the beginning of international protests over the death of George Floyd and others that were not allowed to live to their full potential. I spent that day at the protests and have since found it difficult to stop. Like many on the frontlines, overt and subtle racism has shaped a great part of my being. ⠀ ⠀ Really nothing inspirational to say here, just mourning and sharing.Thats what many are doing now. Celui qui te transforme de l’intérieur quand une société ne te laisse que 14 jours pour être à l’aise de l’exprimer à l’extérieur.. Nous aussi on se mange une putain de claque. Nous aussi on cherche des repères, le lien qui rattachera ce nouveau né à nous.. On ne m’a pas demandé de couper le cordon.. On ne m’a pas demandé grand chose c’était l’urgence. Et quasiment le jour même je devais me rendre au taf.. les premiers jours à la maison, un mois après la naissance de mon fils, je lui portais encore une chaise sous sa douche et j’essayais de savonner ma femme qui ne pouvait même pas se laver.. je lui disais au revoir dans le lit le matin et l’a retrouvait dans la même position après mon entraînement le soir .. j’ai bcp bataillé pour tisser ce lien, pour me sentir utile et pour être le père dont mon fils avait besoin, le partenaire de ma femme et l’homme que la société voulait que je sois .. Ce soir le congé paternité est passé de 14 jours à 28 jours .. ça n’est pas encore le paradis, c’est toujours inégal .. mais c’est une VICTOIRE, je le dis haut et fort, merci de nous considérer un peu plus ce soir, nous les pères... Jélu. Cabeleireiro. Fechou devido ao confinamento provocado pelo Corona virus. Infelizmente já tinham pouca actividade e esta época não ajudou para manterem o cabeleireiro em funcionamento. Este letreiro foi um marco para a praça /jardim no bairro de Campo de Ourique, em Lisboa.
