Producer and rapper Pete Rock with an MPC! Along with groups like A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots, Pete Rock played a major role in the merging of elements from jazz into hip hop music. As one of the mainstays of 1990s East Coast hip hop production, he is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier, RZA and J Dilla! Hereās an interview excerpt where he talks about what gear heād have for kids if he opened up a school, via a 2001 Rock On interview: [Rock On: What piece of gear would you start young producers on at your school? Pete: I would start them out on something simple like a [Boss] Dr. Rhythm, and then Id gradually move it on up to actual drum machines that are used in the studio. Id give them something they could play around with and sample. I would go through the steps with them and tell them what to do. Rock On: Was the SP-12 your first piece of gear? Pete: Yeah. Ive worked with other drum machines like the [Roland] TR-808, [Oberheim] DX, the Roland [TR-]909, and the Dr. Rhythm box. When the SP came out, it first was the SP-12 and then it was the SP-1200. The 12 had no disk drive; you had to use a separate disk drive with the SP-12. The SP-1200 already had one built in, and it provided a little more sampling time. Rock On: Were your first productions done solely on the SP-1200? Pete: Yeah, and Ive been using that ever since. Rock On: What about the Akai MPC-3000? Pete: I have that still. Im learning how to use that as well. Vangelisā score for Ridley Scottās classic 1982 sci-fi film Blade Runner is considered an influential work in the history of electronic music. It was nominated in 1983 for a BAFTA and Golden Globe as best original score. Vangelis recorded, mixed and produced the score for Blade Runner in his London recording space Nemo Studios in 1982 (above, a photo of Vangelis at a venue in 1976). Hereās an excerpt from Nemo Studios on the recording process: [The long notes in the films opening credits were created on Vangelis Yamaha CS-80 synthesiser, an instrument that featured many performance controls, including a ribbon controller that gave Vangelis the flexibility apply a pitch bend to his notes. It also had polyphonic aftertouch, which gave Vangelis control over each notes inflection and modulation by varying the amount of pressure on each key pressed on the instrument. Besides the Yamaha CS-80, two other prominent instruments heard throughout Blade Runner are a Roland VP-330 VocoderPlus synthesiser, for the string section, and a Fender Rhodes, for the nostalgic-sounding electric piano. Other instruments included a Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 synthesiser, used for producing low drones and effects, E-Mus Emulator keyboard, put to use as a percussive sampler and a sound library, and Yamaha GS-1 for occasional percussion effects. Vangelis created the enormous spatial distance of the score by running his instruments through a Lexicon 224 digital reverberation sound processor. He used it by applying depths and spaces to his synthesisers and percussion, creating lush spaces to complement the films vast landscapes. For compositions that incorporated the occasional use of pulsating sequencer work, Vangelis had a set-up consisting of several Roland synthesisers and sequencers. This allowed him, during his performance, to adjust, transpose and edit the sequence as he played along. Legend Gary Numan with a Roland 808! Hereās an excerpt from the Gary Numan Synth History interview a couple months ago! Synth History: Do you have a favorite synthesizer of all time? Gary: I do but itās a software synth called Omnisphere. I think Omnisphere is an incredible tool for people like me, songwriters that are grounded more in sound than technique. If you mean a hardware synth Iād probably go for the Oberheim OBXa. The OBXa always seemed to come up with the unexpected. Synth History: Drum machine, acoustic drums, or both? Gary: Depends. I donāt really use drum machines at all, havenāt for many years. I have always used real drummers live of course, usually working with loops and other triggered drum parts or sounds. In the studio itās usually loops first for the vibe and then programmed real drum samples, but not a real drummer. Iād like to use a real drummer in the studio again, at least in part, to add to all the programming, and we may do on the new album.
