I got a chance to chat with owner, Poreyah Benton, about her backstory, vegan cuisine, and the restaurants future. Check it out! ____________________ You’ve probably heard it before: “Vegan diets aren’t filling enough”; “Veganism is expensive”; or “Vegan plates sacrifice the flavors I know and love.” But at Vegan Ahava, Chef and owner Poreyah Benton (second picture on the left) debunks all these myths and then some. “Don’t knock it till you try it,” she says. Offering vegan comfort food in the New Haven area since last November, the food truck has developed a large fan base among many diets. “I have a lot of customers who aren’t vegan actually and they still like to support,” Benton says. Benton has been a vegan all her life growing up in Dimona, Israel where she was part of an African Hebrew Israelite community. A community of 4,000 that has actually been vegan for 50 years. She recalls learning to cook at the age of six and loving it ever since. What an incredible honor to receive this today. There’s no opinion that means more to me than that of the local cannabis community. Passionate about much more than just viticulture, Dave is not only our vineyard manager, but also looks after Governance ( well-being and doing things properly ). He was the seed planter for our Mental Health Awareness campaign in July. In the Vineyard, Dave is extremely passionate about sustainability, working tirelessly to refine our practices over the last 4 years. He believes in a long term vision of a fully self-sustainable model ( pruning and crop management to one side ). To get a small glimpse into who Dave is when he goes home... him and his wife Heidi ( who also works with us ) bought a block of land in Coonawarra a few years ago, which was home to an olive grove, among other things. They are now producing their own spray free Coonawarra Extra Virgin Olive Oil, after taking time to learn from the best @grampiansoliveco , who Heidi couldn’t speak more highly of. If you have had one of our platters, their’s is the oil we use for them. Oh, and he is a Richmond supporter. Smoke and instability from #wildfires compound the risks they face every day. Our staff across rural #California are working hard with a variety of partners to get masks, food, know your rights information, and other resources to agriculture workers. For example, our Fresno team partnered with Catholic Charities, Diocese of Fresno to host a drive-through event in Five Points that distributed hundreds of masks and bags of food to agriculture workers and their families. Don Miguel Rodriguez - Mataquescuintla, Guatemala Don Miguel is a central figure in the Xinca parliament and has been actively involved in the struggle against the Escobal silver mine project since its inception. His gentle and calm demeanour is always present, but quickly turns to focused passion in moments when he must speak for the rights of his community and defend the land his family and peoples have occupied for hundreds of years. He is present whenever there is a call to action, and his resistance has even seen him jailed without due cause. A coffee grower since he was a child, he manages two small plots of Catuai and Pache San Ramon, both situated between 1750 and 1800masl, interplanted with the beautiful shade of pine and gravilea. As we stood on the slopes of his farm last year, he made sure to underline how important the resistance to the silver mine was, not only out of respect for Xinca sovereignty but also to the future of his family and community. The mountains surrounding Mataquescuintla are some of the most pristine in the country, with some of the cleanest natural source waters as well. This year, Miguel was one of a handful of the group to begin processing coffees in his house and he’s highly motivated to continue improving his knowledge and to improve the quality of his coffee. His coffees were some of the first from the group to arrive in Canada in 2018 and now he’s in need of more buyers. 30 bags of his coffee still remain, and present the opportunity to support a pillar of the Xinca community. Feeling kinda fabulous with this photo of me by @jackiedivesphoto in an excellent article by @lexxgill about covid-19 and the unexpected opportunities that have developed, especially for BIPoC folx, who have historically had a harder time finding access in the food industry. I am so grateful to both of these women for their time, energy, and passion to shine a spotlight on these businesses. Its been especially cool to see all the ways that the diversity of cultures in Vancouver collide and are celebrated right now, as I hope they will continue to be, permanently. I had the privilege of participating in the @bipocfoodcouver pop-up last week, and the response was wonderfully uplifting. It can be such a struggle to find a foothold in food, to make it profitable, and to feel like youll find your way. The most beautiful thing about working in a commissary kitchen like @cohocommissary is the community and collaboration that arises. One of my favourite sayings is, a rising tide floats all ships. The other day someone commented on our TikTok: Industrial Farmers are not farmers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The comment gained quite a bit of traction, and a fair amount of likes. This was a comment we have never heard before. Their reasoning behind their statement was that we use GMO’s, roundup, and have air conditioned machinery. And people were agreeing with him! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Obviously, I don’t waste my time overthinking these types of comments and taking them to heart. People who leave those comments have a whole lot of hate in their heart, and who knows, they could be going through a rough patch in their life. But, it did spark a thought in me. What makes a farmer a farmer? Does a farmer have to pick all of their crops by hand or have a fleet of tractors? Do they have to be organic or can they use GMO’s and sprays? Do we have to have a small herd of cows or can we have thousands? Hint hint: IT DOESN’T MATTER!!! Anyone that is helping to feed the world is a farmer. That is our job. It doesn’t matter how you do it, as long as you are caring for the land and animals responsibly! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So thank you userr4kx9376k6 for telling us we are not “real farmers” because we have air conditioned tractors. SHATTERED DREAMS: Kishori Raut Kurmi, 65, of Bishrampur, Parsa has a family of seven. He lives in a small house with a thatched hay roof. Four years ago his son Mukesh, 39, left to go to Saudi Arabia, where he would get a job and support his family. He borrowed Rs 1,50,000 from someone from the village and was slowly paying his way. “He had planned to pay everything off this year,” says Kishori. When the pandemic started, the Kurmi family was making do with what they had. Three months ago, Kishor was sitting outside in his yard getting vegetables ready for dinner when the phone rang. “They told me my son, Mukesh, had died in Saudi Arabia,” he says. The family learned that Mukesh died in a road accident while trying to send money home. A few days later his son’s body arrived home in a coffin. “I am devastated,” says Kishori, “We sent our son abroad and we were weaving many dreams, but the dreams are shattered. According to the statistics from the Foreign Employment Promotion Board, an average of two Nepali migrant workers die abroad every day. Mukesh’s company has not sent the money his son earned, and Kishori has not heard anything from the Nepali government on compensation or relief. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he has not been able to mourn his son’s death properly. For now all Kishori can think of is how to survive another day, “We are poor people. It wasn’t easy filming this production and this next episode into the Jungles of Borneo with a Dayak headhunter tribe is a testament of that. We took wooden long tail boats into the heart of this wild country in search of jungle Mahseer, one he most challenging fish to catch that we’ve ever encountered. . We had a small army of Dayak tribesman assisting us on this exploration and with there help there was nothing in our path that could stop us. Everyday we pushed deeper into what was assumed the impossible and unnavigable by boat. We yanked boats up waterfalls, up rapids and sliced through anything in our path. . We saw the battle remains of dead people. We were attacked by leeches everyday. We experienced horrific flooding and almost lost one of our base camps when the river flooded up 14ft and one night a jungle old growth fell and by some act of god managed to not smash us in the middle of the night. Morning! Awesome news yesterday but here is a little back story. A lot people yesterday asked why I looked so serious in the picture @foodandwine took. This particular picture was taken a day after we had to furlough all our staff the shoot was scheduled for weeks and couldn’t be postponed so it went on! It honestly was one of the hardest things I have ever done, all I could think about is the team! 🎉 Congratulations to Lloyd Black who was voted as the winner of the 2020 #SilverSneakers Swanson Award! 🏅 Lloyd Black, a 92-year old retired teacher, made the decision to improve his personal fitness by becoming a member of Anytime Fitness at the age of 90.
