I made this pendant to mark this strange time in history and the notion of what it means to stay home. For me, being home has been a whirling mix of things - gratitude for the people I share my life with and the beautiful piece of land that we inhabit, worry over a very uncertain future as as self-employed artist, shame that my chosen path in life isn’t in the essential services sectors as well as comfort and pride in our (mostly) communal efforts to protect each other by staying home. There has also been a lot of reflection on what my Mom used to call “being plain”. When I was a kid and had an itch to go somewhere or do something, but my Mom felt like our family just needed a day at home, she would tell me that we were just going to stay home and “be plain”. *SOLD* Close up of the new necklace you may have seen me wearing in my last post. Lemurian seed crystal points, the largest one almost 3 inches in length. Super simple, yet a stunner. This is part of the collection I was planning on launching at New York Fashion Week this fall. Part of the collection I quietly poured my heart and soul into during the first few months of the pandemic. I made the choice (again, everybody has to define their own risks and limits during this time) two months ago to postpone my participation, as neither myself or my doctors thought it was the best idea. To say I was disappointed is an understatement... gutted, heartbroken, defeated... all those thoughts swam through my head. I have had the goal of NYFW for so long, and it seemed to slip through my fingers when I was so close. BUT, all hope is not lost. I was able to move my participation to the spring, and Im saying this out loud now to make it concrete and real. This time around was not for me, but I will get there, and I will have a collection Im even more proud to show. When I made that call in July, I packed away these pieces, the crazy big over the top things my heart yearns to make... and when I planned my angel wing search with @Bernadettemarciniak Thursday, I pulled them out finally. Casualties of ruined plans no more, they are breathing the light and will soon be completed, not for the runway, but for me. My plans for 2020 may have gotten derailed, but they are not dead. And letting go of what I thought would happen has made room for other beautiful things to occur. This isnt a sad post, but it is a post that mourns a loss. It is totally possible to grieve with gratitude, and thats were I sit today. I will watch the runways next week with a mixed bag of emotions I am sure, but I will see you in the spring NY! 🌱 - @desertdaisyjewelry on Instagram

I feel like people only get to see the highlights of being a military family. The happy FaceTime calls and joyful reunions... • Sean has been gone four months now. Our newest necklace was inspired by an incognito way I say “I love you” to my kids when we want to be quiet or are too far apart to hear each other. For my daughter we use the single hand ASL I love you sign- for my son we use the counting fingers for 1, 4, 3. The numbers represent the number of letters in I(1) Love(4) You(3). I made this necklace for someone a while ago, who couldnt afford getting a hug due to sickness, it could really harm her. In our social distancing, I thought #nohugs applies to us too, fortunately only temporarily. . I also want to share some good news. Last week we received the news that my brother-in-law, who lives a few states away, tested positive with coronavirus. He felt really sick, had high fever, and lost his appetite. Two Facebook groups I belong to, prayed collectively. His temperature continued to go down last night. His appetite improves as well (today he asked for pizza!). Today didn’t go as I had planned. I threw out my back pretty badly on our first ride at the water park, and spent our time there sobbing on a lounge chair in physical and emotional pain, watching my family make memories without me. 💔 It felt very unfair. But then I started to intentionally shift my thinking, and I thought of all the things I loved about Koa, and I decided to BE those things, just as I had hoped to aloud when I posted about Koa’s birthday this morning. I was brave when I shared how I was feeling with my group of healing warrior parents and Koa’s baby group. I was confident when I reminded myself that there are no coincidences. It wasn’t a mistake that my day had changed. I was friendly when I said hi to people I passed. I was joyful when I filled my heart with gratitude rather than lack. I was helpful when I cared for Ash. I was curious when I let the day unfold as it was supposed to, not as I had wanted it to. I was adventurous when I said yes to finding new options. I was funny when I sang songs with Ash to make him laugh. I was willing when I chose to let go of my expectations. I was able when I purposefully shifted my thinking. I was a leader when I invited my family to focus on the gifts Koa has given us in his life AND in his death. I was a doer when I sought out care for my pain. I was someone who changed the world when I saw all of incredible random acts of kindness being done in Koa’s name today with #koasactsofkindness “Be the things you loved most about the people who have transitioned.” Happy birthday, Koa Becker Norman.
