I’m obsesssssed with this series. Also, apparently it’s #MondayMaas?! I can’t believe I waited so long to be a part of this awesomely badass community 😍🖤 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The rumors are true, ACOMAF is somehow even better than ACOTAR. Not only is the love story one of my FAVORITES, the deep and detailed telling of the recovery from trauma and PTSD is so powerful and moving. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was so conflicted with this one in the beginning because I’ve NEVER had such whiplash going from loving a character to absolutely hating them (IYKYK). But, it was another great exploration of the different ways trauma can truly effect people and inherent characteristics that may not have always been on the surface. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Guys, like I said in my last post, you MUST pick up this series if you haven’t already. I bought this book on kindle and audiobook as well so I could literally nonstop read it. I listened to chapters 54 and 55 in my car in dead stop traffic (again, IYKYK) and I full on ugly SOBBED for everyone to see. No shame. No regrets. The world is full of bacteria that have to share the world with myriad species, and often have to live in competition with other microbes. Many bacteria produce antibiotic compounds that they can employ in their battle against other bacteria, some of which people have used as medicine. Other microbes can then evolve ways to evade and resist those antimicrobials as the competition continues.  These are glycopeptide antibiotic producers from the Wright study. / Credit: Photo courtesy McMaster University Now scientists at McMaster University have traced the long history of antibiotic use and resistance in microbes. Reporting in Nature Microbiology, they found that antibiotics and antibiotic resistance emerged together somewhere between 350 and 500 million years ago. This work can aid in the development of new antibiotics or alternatives to antibiotics, as resistance to the drugs continues to threaten public health. Our findings are of significant interest, said senior study author Gerry Wright, professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster and Director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research and the newly established David Braley Centre for Antibiotic Discovery. Our study reveals several implications in how we could potentially manage antibiotic use and find new drugs for antimicrobial infections. In this study, the researchers assessed the genomes of bacterial samples from a group called Actinobacteria; they focused on gene clusters involved in the generation of glycopeptide antibiotics. The drugs vancomycin and teicoplanin are in this class and are frequently used to treat bacterial infections. The scientists studied how these genes changed over time, and found that the synthesis of glycopeptide antibiotics and resistance to the effects of the microbes that produce the compounds trace back 150 to 400 million years. The genetic precursors to glycopeptide antibiotic production go back even farther. Resistance arose along with the antibiotic biosynthesis genes - and the glycopeptides may, therefore, drive the evolution of resistance, suggested the researchers. Inspired by Ekrem Hakki Ayverdi’s Tulip Manuscript showing 18th century portraits of delicate and graceful tulips abundant in Ottoman gardens. . .The Ottomans Turks loved all flowers with unrestrained exuberance, but adopted the Tulip as an independent element, creating a distinctive and personal universe of ornamentation, to adorn palaces, mosques and monuments in tiles with stylised tulip patterns and clothes woven in silks and gold. . . . My humble flower is painted on stretched Fabriano Artistico watercolour paper, sized in wheat starch paste (recipe generously taught by @saraysanat) and tea stained. .Painted with gouaches and hand made 24ct shell gold and loose gold leaf flakes. 34cm x 23cm - gummed tape yet to be removed). . . . . .I shared the process of making genuine (shell) gold paint in my stories last week, saved in my highlights above. I was asked to make two sets of blankets and cushions using locally found eucalyptus leaves for a cosy cottage. A recycling, reusing and up cycling project that I really enjoyed. The blankets are vintage wool and all the cushions were dyed and printed with several types of eucalyptus leaves including Brittle gum (Eucalyptus maniffera) and Blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus). They were made up of fabric remnants of cotton, linen, silk and merino wool, shabby and uneven. Dyeing the blankets were hard work! I will share the video of the 50 litre pot! 🤍 E un bambino quando? 🤍 Ci sono periodi della vita in cui questa domanda è lordine del giorno. Un po come quando ci si riuniva al pranzo di Natale e veniva chiesto del fidanzatino. Poi si chiedono notizie del matrimonio, poi di un eventuale secondo bambino. Insomma per ogni momento della vita cè la domanda indiscreta di turno. Spesso non viene chiesto né con malizia né con cattiveria, lo si chiede perché viene quasi spontaneo, lo si chiede per fare conversazione. Purtroppo però questa domanda può essere un macigno per chi la riceve. Prima di farla fermiamoci un attimo a pensare: magari quella donna, quella coppia non desidera figli, magari sta lottando per averne, magari ne ha appena perso uno, magari ha appena finito di piangere per il ciclo che puntuale si riprensenta ogni mese. The ultimate hospital bag list 💛 (IMO is overrated). My past 2 pregnancies had me filling up 3 hospital bags (1 for husband, 1 for me and 1 for the baby) with all these essentials, and honestly there are a lot in there that we all could live without, as I ended up unpacking a lot of unopened ziplocs when we got home 😅 👶 Your newborn wont have 3 outfit changes during the day- unless you plan to do a photoshoot. But I will definitely swear by swaddles and diapers 🙌 👨 Baby daddy wont be changing as much either 🤣 🤱Our hospital bags are often neglected (I think, bec we make sure that everyone else has more than enough. Reminds me of the story of why Mama Bears porridge is cold). It’s hard to get it together the last few weeks. I will be honest, I am really gutted about the boys off the Gulf 1 Livestock ship. The whole situation has affected me. It has knocked around just about every stocky I know. To have such promising young men lost in such a completely avoidable incident, with the silence of the Government and others, deafening. A shipping company that has some fucking questions to answer. Survivors that have some fucking questions to answer. I mean all we all want to know is “Did those lads get in a liferaft” Simple question that with all the ‘drills’,paperwork, the regulations, SOP’s, communication, all the t’s being crossed and i’s being dotted, a ship still manages to sail into the eye of a typhoon fully loaded and with a recent history of engine issues... this vessel has failed our industry, our producers and their animals and all the men onboard. SFRC-based biomimetic endocrown - Part 2 As promised some extra info about the endocrown case: A tooth-like restorative approach was adopted for the fabrication of the endocrown. Dentine was replaced by a semi-IPN-based millimeter-scale SFRC (everX Posterior). This SFRC core had a more or less anatomical design leaving at least 1mm of space for the enamel-replacing PFC (Clearfil Majesty ES-2). The days are getting shorter and the lockdown looser now and so I am bidding farewell to #fryties with this last display of 3 from my favourite tie-makers. They are each small, independent, imaginative and talented. We start with Nino’s, of Soho’s Brewer Street. The son of a well-known London tailor, Franco Santoro, Nino has been making bespoke shirts and suits since 1993. This gorgeous tie is hand painted. I have a black and white version too. Pic 2 (swipe left) is from Penrose, who’ve been specialising in designing and making ties for years. This beauty reminds me of something sumptuously medieval – perhaps filtered through the mind of a Victorian like William Morris or Augustus Pugin. Pic 3 is the work of Magties, who made ties for me in the latter series of QI. Alan Brooker started the company in Brick Lane and says in his little biog on the Etsy page where he still sells his remarkable creations: “I built a client range including Sir Paul McCartney, Stephen Fry, Dr Who and James Bond to mention a few.” Only ties could place me in such company. It has been an unreserved delight to share neckties and cravats with you all. Your enthusiastic responses, witty participation and informed commentaries have lightened my days throughout this bizarre and unforgettable lockdown experience. We will none of us forget the months of seclusion, fear and uncertainty, but I hope most of us will have found plenty to enjoy too. A new kind of closeness with the natural world and with that mysterious entity Time; with friends, food, family, pets too and – yes – even something as silly as ties. Frivolous, facetious, facile and superficial as they may appear, ties can serve as windows into our mythologies; into the stories of our cultural, historical, economic, social lives, remembered and misremembered as they so often are. I hope amongst the 100+ I shared with you one or two struck some kind of chord. Farewell then, loyal and friendly followers of #fryties. The Nazca lines of Peru are the world’s most renowned geoglyphs however the west coast also has great geoglyphs to offer. The best-known American geoglyphs are the Blythe Intaglios. These giant desert figures can be found west of the Colorado River 15 miles north of Blythe, California. Nell’Isola di Ortigia c’è un luogo in cui mito e realtà si incontrano: la Fonte Aretusa. ⠀ Situata nella parte più antica della città di Siracusa e immersa nel verde dei papiri, questa sorgente d’acqua dolce giunge per via sotterranea sino all’Isola per poi sgorgare a qualche metro dal mare, creando un piccolo laghetto semicircolare gremito di anatre e pesci. ⠀ Secondo la mitologia, Aretusa era una delle ninfe al seguito di Artemide. ⠀ Durante una battuta di caccia, la fanciulla si allontanò troppo dal gruppo e arrivò sola davanti alle sponde del fiume Alfeo, le cui acque erano così limpide che si poteva scorgere la ghiaia sul fondo. Era una giornata molto calda e le venne il desiderio di fare un bagno. Tutt’attorno vi era un silenzio singolare, interrotto solo dai suoni armoniosi della natura. ⠀ Aretusa, certa di non essere vista, si tolse le candide vesti e si immerse. L’acqua cominciò ad agitarsi e, proprio mentre tentava di raggiungere la riva, le apparve il fiume Alfeo. Whether you have begun the healing process or currently battling here are some tips for dealing with emotional wounds that can support you on your journey. 1. Take your time. Allow yourself some grace and don’t believe it all has to get fixed at once! It’s a process. 2. Healing takes time and everyone’s journey will look different. Small changes will one day be seen as the major stepping stones that got you to a healthier place. 3. Be patient and consistent. 4. Be realistic about your goals and expectations. 5. We have passed 6K sales today!!! It was just the 5th of August that we have hit the 5K mark! Before, it takes us about a year to hit even 1K sales 😲 . . . Musings from the ER 🚨🚑 What I enjoy -Acuity/patients: Pts present to the ER at their most vulnerable state. Usually scared & in a lot of pain. It’s a huge honor to be the first one to comfort and care for them.💖 -The unpredictability & breadth of potential pathology: You never know what you’ll get. In one room, you can have a pt with suicidal ideations. In the next, a pregnancy woman with vaginal bleeding. -The work-life balance: EM docs get a lot of days off. They clock in and clock out a specific times, and they don’t take call. 👏 What I didn’t expect -When I think about EM, I think of trauma. (Thanks Grey’s anatomy 😆) While car accidents, falls, and gun shot wounds happen, the majority of ER visits are for more common complaints (i.e. abdominal pain, cough/fever, lacerations) What I’ve learned -The system is broken y’all. I’ve known this to be true, but it really become apparent in the ER. We’ve had so many pts come in for things that could be managed by a primary care doctor or an urgent care. Ex: I had a pt who had knee pain after surgery, but couldn’t afford her follow up visits ($200) to her orthopedic surgeon. She developed an infection and ended up in our ER, where we prescribed her antibiotics and sent her home (something that could have 1. Been prevented 2. Been done in an office visit). She’ll now have a bill that’s at least $800+. I am very cost-conscious about health care and always think about how much our fragmented system affects our patients’ well-being from a cost/debt perspective.🥺 Why EM isn’t for me -The hours. My body can’t handle the frequent changes from AM to PM shifts, or working at odd hours of the day. 😬 -Being a generalist. While it’s great to be on the front lines, many times EM docs have to consult other services for more specialized care. I like being the specialist, knowing everything there is to know about one organ or system. -The lack of long term pt relationships. ER is fast-paced. The goal is to get patients in, give them what they need, and discharge them (or transfer them to another service). You usually won’t see them again and don’t get to build relationships over wks to yrs! - @lilyinmedicine on Instagram

Another from the newest release-that we hope carries with it a bit of encouragement in this season that feels so wavy and uncertain. Last weekend our family was camping up north on the shore of Lake Michigan. The first night the winds were SO strong we thought our tent might blow away and the waves were SO loud pounding the shore that they drowned out even the noise of the crazy gusting wind.
