Here are my 8 simple tips to help you get back in the game this week and start feeling more in control of your life! • Wake up earlier! Give yourself time to get into the day and prepare your mind, body and soul for the day ahead. • Meditate. Learn to be still within. Create an internal environment that is calm and allows you to feel more in control of your life. Everything else will fall into place once you calm the storm within. • Have a plan for the day! You don’t need a long winded to do list. Focus on 3 key targets for the day ahead and get into the habit of starting and finishing a project or task. • Get moving! Wake up and work out or go for a walk. Don’t stay still for too long, keep moving throughout the day. Stay inspired, stay energised and keep moving forward! • Journal. Write down what’s in your head and heart. Start getting your thoughts, feelings and ideas down on paper every day. It is the first step to creating clarity and dropping off the baggage after another long day. • Break your pattern! Go do something different and expand your horizons. There is always a new coffee shop, store or exhibition to check out and if you’re completely stuck go for a drive and see where the road takes you! • Help someone! There is always someone to help. Reach out and make a difference. Sometimes helping others is the best way to get a fresh perspective on our lives and see first hand just how powerful and special we can be - when we start to shine our light! • Smile a little more! Find the beauty in your life and find the beauty in others. Then you’ll never have to pretend to smile again, you’ll feel it in your heart and you will carry that energy into each new day! • Have a great week and remember you create the flow, it all starts and ends with you! This post isn’t for all of you, but it’s for too many of you. If this post strikes a chord with you, makes you think, makes you uncomfortable...then it’s probably for you. I have gone back and forth about posting something personal on Instagram for the last five days, exhausted by the overwhelming sadness and anger I’ve experienced at the murder of George Floyd and the ignorance and racism I’ve witnessed in the wake of it. The friends whose silence and lack of empathy has let me down immeasurably. The responsibility I’ve felt to educate and the resentment I’ve felt over the pressure to be optimistic when I’m not sure I have much left to give. Dear white friends, please don’t send your black friends paragraphs saying how much this has hurt you. I get it but I can’t carry your grief. Tell your white friends how outraged this makes you. Don’t tell us, we are the ones who live with it. I have seen and loved you but I need you to see and love me, and the black ppl who don’t look like me. When I am lost, words find me. But it seems like I can’t find words strong enough to capture the collective grief Black people are feeling. I can only hope that this sparks change from the people who need and want to do better. This heavy time were living through, right now, has brought with it so much noise - but also a quietness as weve all been called to take pause. This morning, I woke up to my five year old kissing the tears on my face and handing me this card shed written for me. Ten years ago today, I lost my mama - and I still feel her loss so deeply, today. I spent much of the day reflecting on all the ways that it changed me, including the way in which it fueled me to turn this hobby of mine into a career. It was one of my last conversations with her that pushed me to pursue my passion for creating and capturing memories - and to share it with others. It was looking back and realizing I dont have nearly enough photos of her or with her past my childhood years to look back on and to hold onto and to share with my own babies - and hoping I can give others more. And while my mama remains my first why, its these babes of mine - their love, their hearts, their ability to connect so deeply - that keep me going. They are the reason I spend my days showing up for them and working tirelessly into the night to serve my clients. They inspire me and support me and remind me that the work I do has purpose. This pandemic threatens the livelihood of many small business owners like myself. But our purpose remains - to serve and support our community. And for me right now, that looks like carrying out my social responsibility to shelter in place while also supporting as many of my peers as possible. Because at the end of this - and there will be an end - I cant wait to capture life and love and celebrate life with you all. - @dselbak on Instagram

In 2019, I filmed a music video for this song, which was meant to be released on p110. After spending hours of time, money and planning, the producer didnt give me the copyright for YouTube eventhough its in the contract. This has lead to my video being unused. In the future I might work with someone to redo the instrumental to make it work with the video. The producer shall stay un named as its done with now! But once again, another lesson learnt! • This song was written in an unexpected situation with a strong meaning behind it. Hi. I’ve been gone a minute. Life’s not been kind. It never really has been but the last month and a half of 2019 was especially tough. I came frighteningly close to no longer being here. No one knows. I’m okay now, but I forgot how quickly the darkness can suck you under. How easily our breath can be stolen by it, and how difficult it is to take it back. I don’t feel strong, but I also don’t feel weak. It’s been years since u felt that badly and, honestly, I don’t know what I feel. But I’m better now, and it’s a new decade. Back from an incredibly fun weekend cabin outing with my bass family to celebrate my 30th journey around the sun. Taking a moment to majorly reflect on how grateful I am for these loving souls and how much I have learned and grown through our time and experiences shared over the years. It is a rare and special privilege to have a group of friends like this and that fact serves as a powerful reminder to push myself to cherish more and connect deeper with the ones I love. As my birthday approaches a current huge lesson in life has been to express gratitude through action, not just thought. It is through action that we pave the way for feelings and empathy, connecting deeper with others, and form better habits that serve to strengthen our bonds with each other and ultimately to the divine universe itself. This is a lesson I have learned before, but without constant effort, it’s so easy for me to become stagnant, comfortable, and disconnected. Going into this new chapter, I’m committing to pushing myself harder and further out of my comfort zone to carry out these actions of love and in turn dispel fear from my mind. It is in the light of love for one another as well as ourself than we find peace and connect with the infinite. Five years ago today I lost my mom. The last week of September is always a tough one for me because although they were years apart I lost Derek and Mom back to back. This is my journal entry from September 30, 2015. I was very distraught and after my mom died. You know I generally feel grateful for getting the opportunity to teach mindfulness in all the avenues that I get to these days, its truly a gift unto itself. Day 1 (Picture 1): 5x5x5x5 My word was “told” after picking up C. S. Lewis’s “A Grief Observed” (a fitting book for these days, I think) and this is a poem I wrote meditating in response to that word. Day 2 (Pictures 2 & 3): Found Markings I used a teabag from my favorite tea flavor (Fireside Vanilla SPICE thank you for asking 😉) and did a blind contour of these potted plants on watercolor paper. I really miss my job!! I miss my colleagues and my friends. I took a year out of working in Theatre to support myself with my recovery. I got the opportunity to help others during that time and work on my other passion projects however nothing compared or filled my heart with as much as theatre did, there’s is no other feeling like 5 weeks hard work in rehearsals and hearing the applauses/ standing ovations On opening night! you are precious, remember that Always! if someone lies to me, puts me down about my body. ignores my texts. takes me for granted. doesnt talk to me for days for no reason at all. shames me or tries to make me feel small, inadequate, less than, not worthy, not good enough or any other bs. i will leave them so fast the breeze i leave will hit them in the face. i have many times; and so should you! i have learnt how to be kind and respectful to myself. it was a long long road with many hills and valleys. and im telling you right now as sure as the sun rises and sets. i will let NO ONE take that away from me.
