@mayorcantrell ‘s life has been steeped in community service. As a little girl, her grandmother would bring her to neighborhood meetings, and by the age of 13, she was serving as secretary for her local chamber of commerce. “My soul found its home in New Orleans,” is how Mayor Cantrell describes her arrival in 1990 as a student at Xavier University. After graduation, she and her husband, Jason, bought a home in the Broadmoor neighborhood, and Cantrell became an active member of her new community. As the President of the Broadmoor Improvement Association, Cantrell led the neighborhood’s redevelopment following Hurricane Katrina and the levee failures. Flooding decimated Broadmoor, but through citizen engagement and Cantrell’s leadership, Broadmoor is now considered an international model for disaster recovery. Elected to the City Council in 2012, Cantrell has prioritized improving people’s lives. On May 7, 2018, Mayor Cantrell was sworn in as the first female Mayor of New Orleans, just in time to celebrate the city’s tricentennial, or 300th anniversary. She is a dedicated wife to her husband, Jason, proud mother of her daughter, RayAnn, and a parishioner at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church. This is the high school library where I work. Lately, I have been going in there just to walk around and be among the books that should be stuffed in student lockers and backpacks and it feels so empty. There are no kids bustling in and out and it makes me feel trapped. The kids are not allowed in the high school and my mind goes through mini freak outs all day not knowing when this will end. The library, any library, is my favorite place to be and I can’t wait for the day that it’s full again. The Punjab Women Protection Authority (PWPA) and Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO) on Wednesday agreed to undertake collective efforts to provide justice to female victims of abuse and violence. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by both organisations to support the implementation of the Addressing Root Causes (ARC) project, which will be implemented with technical and financial assistance from Oxfam. SPO initiatives as part of this collaboration will include forming and training Ba-Ikhtiar (BI) groups on their legal rights, procedures and the justice system, developing outreach plans for these groups for the purpose of sharing information on the referral mechanism, and conducting awareness and training for police, courts and community members in target areas on child protection, women, protection of minorities and early age and forced marriages. A Brief History of The Emergency Shelter Partnership In early December 2004, a group of concerned community leaders gathered to address what it saw as a growing problem of homelessness in Northern Westchester County. Reports of homeless men and women suffering through severely cold winters and, in some cases, dying from exposure, mobilized the group to develop a program for a winter night emergency shelter. The core of the shelter concept consisted of interfaith congregations opening their doors to offer a safe place to sleep and a hot meal to those in need of food and shelter. In 2005, the Emergency Shelter Partnership (ESP) committed to providing emergency shelter during the five coldest months of the year, November through March. In October 2011, ESP became a 501(c)(3) not for profit corporation. In 2018, the Emergency Shelter Partnership joined forces with a similar group in Ossining thereby serving two geographical areas – Mt. Kisco and Ossining. We know that everyone wants to get in as much climbing as possible during reservation blocks 🥳 but we do need to remind y’all that we kindly ask that all climbers be ready to exit the gym at the end of a reservation block so that our staff can prep the gym for the next block. ☺️ If there is an announcement made that the block ends in 5 minutes, let’s be courteous and not start another climb.   For mask wearing, we are following CDC guidelines and are no longer allowing bandanas or masks with valves on it. Need a new mask? Weve got your back! Come to the front desk and we will provide you with a complimentary mask. And last but not least, if you are unable to make it to your reservation, please call the front desk so that another member can utilize that spot. This is super important so that all of our friends have the ability to come in and climb. Please note that reservations are held 30 minutes into the time block, and after that, it is first come first serve for drop-ins. This will be important as we start to get into colder temps and busier times in the gym. Suffolk County police officers patrol the county 24-hours-a-day to keep our residents safe. They do this during inclement weather, on holidays and overnight when most people are sleeping. The seemingly simple act of operating a patrol car under adverse conditions is one of the inherent risks to law enforcement. We were unfortunately reminded of the danger when two Suffolk County police officers were seriously injured in motor vehicle crashes and their recovery has been anything but easy. It’s been more than two years since First Precinct Police Officer Don Dillon was patrolling during a snow storm when his patrol car was hit head-on by an individual who was driving high on drugs and operating a stolen car at high speed, despite the poor weather. Officer Dillon suffered numerous broken bones including his pelvis, hip and leg. In a separate crash, Third Precinct Police Officer Christian Vidal was patrolling during the early morning hours on September 1, 2019, when a drunk driver crossed over into his lane of travel and struck his patrol car head on. Officer Vidal was so seriously injured that he was placed in a medically-induced coma. Both Officers Dillon and Vidal want to return to full duty to continue to serve the people of Suffolk County, however, they both still grapple with the serious consequences of their injuries. Earlier this week there was some good news— after extensive and ongoing efforts on his part to rehabilitate, Officer Vidal returned to work on limited duty. However, Officer Dillon, a former marathon runner, has not been able to return to duty due to the severity of his injuries. To show the department’s support for these two officers, Chief of Department Stuart Cameron paid the officers a visit this week. Please remember these two heroic officers and their sacrifice to our county as they continue to struggle with their injuries. You may have noticed that the street in Downtown Campbells been opened again. Yes, this does mean that the street closure experiment is coming to an end, but not entirely. After doing this for a bit over a month, the City of Campbell in consultation with the community of small businesses in Downtown Campbell deemed the road closure to be too detrimental for some of the businesses, but were not giving up on creating more opportunities expand outdoor options. Instead of having the road either closed or open, were going with a hybrid approach with parklets. These are parking spaces transformed into outdoor seating areas. It will take about three weeks for all the barriers needed to get the parklets in place to be installed. In the meantime, the street will be open Mondays through Thursdays and be closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This means that until further notice, the road closure will still be in effect on Fridays and weekends. As soon as the parklets have been fully installed, Campbell Ave. will again be open to traffic seven days a week. The parklets will be kept in place for a minimum of three months, but would likely continue indefinately if everything goes well. We know this news comes as a disappointment to many of you out there and were sorry that we couldnt continue it, but the City of Campbell is taking everything it learned from the month long road closure experiment and applying it to this new effort to give it a much better chance of working out for everyone. Also, weve been very pleased with how much improved youve all been about following safety guidelines since we started the road closure. Most people in Downtown Campbell are now wearing masks and wearing them correctly. Please join us in honoring Staff Sgt. Ronald J. Ouellette, 23, a native of Merrimack, New Hampshire, who gave his life in service to the United States and its citizens. Staff Sgt. Ouellette, who was attached to the 42nd Aerial Port Squadron at Westover Air Reserve Base, Massachusetts, died Monday from injuries sustained in a single all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) non-combat related accident on the flight line at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait. Ouellettte was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve. “Ronald was a valued member of the Patriot Wing and there are no words that can heal the pain his loss brings,” said Col. Craig Peters, the 439th Airlift Wing commander. Ouellette, who had been in the Reserves for six years, was named “airman of the month” in October 2019 according to his squadron’s Facebook page. His awards include the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Reserve Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Longevity Service Award. Our deepest sympathies are with Staff Sgt. BURGER DAY UPDATE! Last week on #burgerday4unitedway 1,452 burgers were sold over our four locations and we want to thank every single person who came out to support the @unitedwayvictoria! That means we at Big Wheel donated $2,904 and the @bwcommunityfoundation donated $1,452. But that only brought us to just shy of @unitedwayvictoria goal of 5k. So we donated an extra $644 on top of that to bring the final donation and official cheque presentation to $5,000!!!! All of this money is going towards childrens literacy programs here on the island and we couldnt be happier to support this great cause! Massive THANK YOU to everyone who joined us last week. An Eagle Scout project is bringing little libraries to Granite Shoals. Jonathan Randolph built three Little Free Library boxes in Granite Shoals to share his love of reading and benefit his hometown, which has no library of its own. The free exchange little libraries are located at City Hall, 2221 N. Phillips Ranch Road; Bluebriar Park, off of North Shorewood Drive; and Crockett Park, at the end of Prairie Creek Road. The Eagle Scout project is one of many requirements Randolph must fulfill to attain the Scouts’ seventh and highest rank. The Marble Falls High School senior is a member of Troop 284. Randolph, who has lived in Granite Shoals “all my life,” said he chose the Little Free Library boxes for a couple of reasons. “I wanted to do an Eagle project that would have an impact on the entire community,” he said. “Other scouts have done stuff for their churches. I wanted to do something that would benefit everybody, something everybody could have access to. In Granite Shoals, we don’t have a library. Neurofibromatosis (NF) can cause tumours to grow on any nerve cell throughout the body. It affects 1 in every 2500 people and a child with NF is born every 3 days in Australia. Cabra-Vale Diggers recently donated $6251 to the Children’s Tumour Foundation for their Health Management Kits Project. The project aims to provide Health Management Kits to individuals and families in the Fairfield area who are impacted by Neurofibromatosis (NF). The Kits are packed with information and are designed to empower families with knowledge, so they feel more able to navigate complicated health systems along with information about navigating the emotional impacts of a diagnosis of NF. They also provide practical tips for talking with your child and tools for educational professionals. Thank you to the team at the Children’s Tumour Foundation for their outstanding work and care for such a delicate project.
