Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Joe Montana and his wife, Jennifer, stopped a home intruder from allegedly kidnapping their 9-month-old grandchild over the weekend, officials said. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Montana, 64, told deputies a woman entered his mansion in Malibu, California, around 5 p.m. on Sept. 26, picked up the baby from a playpen and went upstairs. The couple tried to “de-escalate the situation”, but they got into a “tussle”. Mrs. Montana was able to get the child out of the suspect’s arms the sheriff’s department said in a statement. Should Carotid Holds be banned by Law Enforcement? •••••••••••••••••• Recently the Governor is California @gavinnewsom has banned use of carotid holds by Law Enforcement because it was deemed “unsafe” and “deadly”. Based on my years of training Brazilian Jiu jitsu and knowledge of human anatomy I would like to break down how they work. . Physiology of Carotid Holds: The vascular structures targeted by the technique are the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the carotid sinus. The carotid sinus has pressure receptors that maintain blood pressure and when there is an external compression the response of the body is to reduce blood flow. For loss of consciousness to occur the structure need to be compressed enough to decrease cerebral blood flow. 1️⃣Cerebral hypoxia or going to sleep occurs when the cerebral blood flow velocity dropped below 50% from baseline on both the right and left carotid artery. 2️⃣The compression force required to compress the carotid arteries was at least 100mmHg. An important note is that more than 100mmHg did not cause a faster response in which the subject was rendered unconscious. 3️⃣The average time for unconsciousness following the vascular constraint was held for 9-10 seconds (9.5 +/- 0.4 seconds). . ❗️Important safety note: brain damage can occur when the body does not have oxygen for 3 minutes. . Clearly if brain damage can occur this is unsafe, right? That means you need to maintain the hold for over 2.5 minutes after the opponent is already unconscious. As someone who has done grappling you would know to maintain a near maximum contraction of your arms for just 30 seconds is extremely difficult! . In my opinion this act by the governor is a great disservice to Law Enforcement. In my opinion a carotid hold is an excellent method of restraining an unwilling opponent as safe as possible. I feel that Law Enforcement should be trained on the proper method of executing this technique. . Reference: 1️⃣ Mitchell JR, Roach DR, et al. A Florida woman who raised thousands of dollars for the families of three murdered men is accused of stealing the money and going on a spending spree, police said.
