Want to help out some Bighorn Sheep? The Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep (SCBS) is partnering with Castle Mountain Ventures / Equinox Gold (formerly known as the Viceroy Mine) and the California Chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation (CAWSF) to install a brand new wildlife drinker system on the perimeter of their active mining operations. Dates are Oct. 24-25, 2020. They are requesting early sign ups. The groups are looking for a big group of volunteers to assist with this project. The mine reports at least 25 Bighorn Sheep residing around the property. The habitat is choice with abundant vegetation and favorable geologic structure. This is a great opportunity to provide the one vital element to boost lamb recruitment: WATER! Activities will include: raking and preparing the pad for the rain mat, unfolding and positioning the rain mat, creating the outer edges of the rain mat by filling & placing sand bags on the edges, moving and placing rocks of various sizes as needed (there are plenty of rocks here), preparing the holes for the RainCatcher tanks (they should be already roughly pre-excavated), working with a crew to move the tanks into place manually, burying the tanks with dirt, assisting with plumbing the rain mat catchment dam with the tank system (any plumbers out there want to help?), re-landscaping & clean up, and possibly hauling some water in cubes a short distance (to be determined). Everything is NEPA approved. The Castle Mountain Ventures / Equinox Gold site is located within the newly formed Castle Mtn Monument boundaries, on the Eastern perimeter of the Mojave National Preserve, near the California-Nevada state line. SCBS has a volunteer to cook and serve breakfast and dinner for the crew if enough people are interested. Camp will be set up outside the mine property on BLM land, or you can commute from Searchlight, NV. More details and plans will be provided to those who sign up. The monuments 🏜💫 After watching this incredible December sunset sweep a pink glow across the sandstone buttes, I spent one of my hardest nights camping in 10 degree weather. Juniper is afraid of sleeping bags so she braved the cold. Every half hour or so I would wake up to find her violently shaking and try my hardest to get her into the bag, at which point she would try to claw her way out the bottom of it and I would hold here tightly for as long as I could until she had warmed up. Somehow we got through it and woke up to a thin dusting of snow. Looking back at my photos now, the sharpness of the cold has worn off and in its place is gratitude for such a beautiful experience amongst the monuments. This adventure took place in 2018 on sacred Navajo Land , at a campsite I booked through Hipcamp, hosted by Navajo people. I also want to acknowledge that the Navajo Nation is disproportionately affected by the pandemic, due to the legacy of colonialism and lack of support by the federal government. - @caitlinfullam on Instagram

I took the opportunity to head up to the pinnacles for a night on the long weekend. One of the coolest places I’ve been to in the United States. The landscape in New Mexico was vastly different from anything I’d experienced and captured before. When we got here there was zero direction on how to actually get closer to the base of this place. So we wondered around small backroads in the hopes of linking up with a more official passage. Valley Of The Gods does it again 😍 Zoom in to our little hilltop home! Harley especially loved this place, she is definitely a dirt dog. Water brings life to the desert on the Navajo Nation. Of the nearly 200,000 Navajo people spread across the Navajo Nation, roughly 1/3 do not have access to reliable, clean drinking water. From Climate Change, to Uranium Exposure, access to clean water is far from simple. Today, many water sources on the Navajo Nation still contain arsenic and uranium levels that are too high for human consumption. Many still give this water to their livestock which they plan to eat, further exacerbating the already high rates of cancer that continue on the Navajo Nation - decades after some of these uranium mines have been closed. - Further, many chapter houses (community houses) that supplied clean water, were closed during the peak of covid, further limiting access to clean water. Today is the four year anniversary of the accident which transformed my life, a day I have begun to call my leg-o-versary. Change can be a challenge, but also empowering. In four years I am grateful to have been able to travel to the ends of the earth, surf monster waves in Hawaii’s north shore, ride horses through the deserts of Jordan, climb to the highest altitudes i have ever been to, dive through underwater worlds in the Yucatán, hack my way through the jungles of Colombia and Guatemala, and play soccer with my kids in the park. . . None of this was done alone... so many people to thank for believing in and being part of the journey. Thank you Family, friends, and each of you in the world have been the ‘spirit legs’ to fly with! Thank you to @phprosthetics, @cafoundation, @fillauer, and @ossur who have literally given me legs to move through the world with. I am deeply proud and thankful for all my friends at @natgeo and @disneyplus, and the film crews who believed with me that there were no limitations, that being an explorer is all about mindset, and showing that to millions around the globe on their various world empowering platforms;). Most of all I am eternally grateful for my kids who have been 1000000% in this with me, with smiles and love all the way. . You ever just feel called to be somewhere? It’s less of an interest and more like a deep yearning at the soul level. The first time I felt it was when I drove through Santa Fe on a road trip with my classmates in college. I looked back at the sun setting on the Sangre de Cristos, and I remember thinking “I need to live here.” I graduated a few years later and moved to Santa Fe at the end of that summer. That was over 10 years ago. Then I felt it again, less than 6 months after moving to New Mexico, when I visited Abiquiu for the first time. I saw it all. A home. A family. Animals. A garden. These cerros and canyons and arroyos that I could wander through forever. And me: happy, healthy, thriving. You can imagine my complete and total surprise when, five years later on my first date with @chamapedal he told me he grew up in Abiquiu. There were so many beautiful and strange coincidences around our meeting... like the dream I had the night before we met, where I was carving a wooden spoon. CATHEDRAL GORGE SP: This absolute gem in the desert is located roughly an hour and 45 minutes away from St. George in Panaca, NV. We decided to make a day trip out of it, and it was worth it! I discovered that the cathedral-like spires were made from fallen ash after a volcanic eruption. It’s insanely cool to hike through the narrow walkways and see all the cool formations. It looks like the inside of a cave and feels like a maze. The park is open 24/7 and there’s a $5 entrance fee. The state park is small, but we did find fully shaded picnic tables, a bathroom and stand-alone spigot with fresh water. There are multiple places to park and explore. It was really hot today but the shade inside the formations provided some reprieve from the heat, so it was definitely bearable to walk around during the day. #NationalPublicLandsDay #HikingHighlights #Dunefield On a hike though the dunes youll find yourself enticed to go just a bit further, just a little higher, to get that view youve been waiting for. There are no established trails on the dunes, rather wind scoured ridges to follow, taking you up each un-named and ever-changing peak. The most popular destination on the sand is High Dune. This dune is the tallest dune visible from the Dunes Parking Lot. A mile and a half (as the crow flies) to the summit with a 700-foot elevation gain, you can experience a view of the entire dunefield. These 30 square miles of sand display dramatic shadows and colors at sunrise and sunset. Avoiding the middle of the day will reward you with cooler temperatures and more stunning viewscapes. Be sure to hike in close-toed shoes, bring plenty of water, and be prepared for the heat. Other popular activities on the dunes include sand boarding and sand sledding. We do not rent these inside the park. Checkout our website for more information on where to find these fun items. Lastly, a select few people find themselves drawn to try and hike the tallest dune in the park. Previously, this was Star Dune, a 755-foot, day long commitment. Our park geologist has recently crowned a new king, Hidden Dune, a 745-foot, day long commitment. Star dune has shrunk to 734 feet.
