“Center” Steel and acrylic yarn. 2020. 📸: @lorettt.o ▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️ In my most recent body of work, Sun Series, I ask the viewer to walk through knit-covered steel forms. Each form contains multiple doorways scaled to my height or width, thus creating an intimate conversation between the interactor and myself. “Sun” was part of my birth given name that my parents decided to keep. Not only is it the source of life, but also a part of a greater system. “Center,” the last iteration in my Sun Series, is particularly meaningful to me; two of the doorways are scaled for my parents and positioned across from each other. The other two doorways represent my measurements from when I was adopted from South Korea at 15-months old and my current measurements. This piece serves to bring people together. It was created and constructed by a system of disconnected parts and serves as a metaphor for political and societal systems that separate and bring people together. Through this work, I celebrate the structures that connected me to the people who have given me everything. A big thank you to @bannerot who introduced me to the knitting machine about a year ago. A professor that completely transformed my practice and me as a maker. ♥️ Thanks for coming early and staying after so many classes with me ♥️ And @wickersonstudios_ar for introducing me to parametric design and steel jointery, and the constant feedback during the building process! Armlet of Queen Ahhotep I When it was found among the mummy’s hair, this gold armlet of Ahhotep I was thought to be a crown. Because of its diameter, however, it is certain that it was to be worn round the arm for protection. It is inlaid with lapis lazuli and carnelian and decorated with vulture of gold and inlays bearing the names of Ahmose I. Second Intermediate Period, 17th Dynasty, ca. 1560-1530 BC. Entre os ícones da Coleção do Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro está a escultura em bronze polido Mademoiselle Pogany II, de Constantin Brancusi (1904-1957), conhecido como o patriarca da escultura moderna. Margit Pogany (1879-1964) era uma estudante de arte húngara recém-chegada a Paris quando posou para ele.⠀ ⠀ Brancusi trabalhou muitos anos nessa escultura, fazendo simplificações até a última versão. Exposta em mármore no Armory Show em Nova York, em 1913, foi ridicularizada pelo público e pela crítica, que alegaram que a obra pareceria mais um ovo do que o busto de uma mulher.⠀ ⠀ A Mademoiselle Pogany II do MAM Rio, de 1920, foi escolhida no ateliê de Brancusi pela artista Maria Martins e pela jornalista Niomar Moniz Sodré Bittencourt, que dirigiu o museu por dez anos. A obra foi doada pelo casal Stella e Roberto Marinho em 1952. Em julho de 1978, a escultura enfrentou bravamente o trágico incêndio ocorrido no Pavilhão de Exposições do MAM Rio. Danificada, apareceu no mês seguinte na capa da revista Arte Hoje n. 14, com o título “O MAM renascerá”.⠀ ⠀ A escultura foi restaurada por Edson Motta entre 1978 e 1980, quando voltou ao museu. Em 1980, tornou-se imagem de selo postal brasileiro. Entre os estudos que a escultura suscitou está o artigo da pesquisadora Ana Chaves, que o MAM republica.
