#talktomyself 할머니에게 보낼 사진을 몇 장 추려 인화했다. 가장 최근의 내 모습, 그리고 어릴 적 사진 몇 장. 안타깝게도 사진들이 다 어디로 도망갔는지 둘이 찍은 사진이 없다. 아니, 애초에 둘이 사진을 찍지 않았던 걸까. 하지만 모든 사진에 할머니가 있다. 카메라를 보는 내게 웃으라고 말하던 할머니, 브이하는 나를 말리는 할머니, 셔터가 눌리기 전 얼른 뛰어와 내 잔머리를 정리해주던 할머니, 그리고 이렇게 행여 차가 오진 않을까 걱정하며 내게 눈을 떼지 못하는 할머니. 프레임 안에 함께 있진 않지만 모든 사진에 그리고 어린 시절 모든 날들 어딘가에는 할머니가 있다. 전문적인 건 잘 모르겠지만, 할머니의 병은 서서히가 아니라 차이가 큰 계단처럼 어느 시기를 겪으며 확 나빠지는 것 같다. 갈비뼈를 다쳐 병원에 거의 묶여 있던 시기, 본인의 집을 떠나 있던 시기, 할머니는 급속도로 기억을 잃었다. 그리고 마침내 격일로 돌아가며 요양병원을 찾아가던 엄마와 이모가 찾아뵙지 못하게 되자 우리를 모두 잊고 자신의 기억도 10대 즈음으로까지 되돌아가셨다. 그래도 세 번에 한 번꼴로는 딸들을 알아보셨는데, 이제는 아무리 “누구예요, 엄마”라고 물어도 대답이 돌아오질 않는다. 그도 그럴 것이 쬐끄만 기계 안에 들어 있는 얼굴이 누가 누군지 알 게 뭐겠는가. 그러다 병원 허락 하에 넉 달 만에 가림막을 두고 겨우 5분 만난 날에도, 할머니는 내내 간호사 손만 꼭 붙들고 웃기만 했다. 코로나로 요양병원의 면회가 전면금지된지가 벌써 8개월 째다. 그나마 7월 한 달 간은 2주에 한 번 가림막 면회가 허용됐으나 다시 코로나 확산 위험성이 높아지자 그마저도 중단됐다. 아주 가끔 병원 간호사님 핸드폰으로 영상 통화 하는 게 전부다. 그러는동안 할머니의 치매 진행은 또 급격히 진행됐다. 어쩌면 할머니는 자신이 아니라 우리가 할머니를 잊었다고 생각할지도 모른다. 미안하고 안타깝고 너무나 죄송스럽지만, 이 상황을 이해시킬 수가 당연히 없다. 간호사 선생님께 부탁해 사진이라도 할머니 머리맡에 두려고 하는데, 과연 소용이 있을지 모르겠다. 할머니가 날 기억해내는 것까지는 바라지 않는다. 그저 할머니를 늘 보고 싶어하는 사람이 있다는 걸 느끼게 해드리고 싶을 뿐이다. 할머니가 보고 싶다. 나를 몰라도, 할머니는 나를 안아줄 것 같다. #사진 #할머니 에게 #코로나 제발 좀 - @chaconneg on Instagram
