What do the risk factors associated with developing complications from COVID-19 such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure all have in common? Altered bacteria in the mouth. Whats crazy is, the pain that comes with birth is actually selected FOR in humans because the pain is directly associated with the size of the head of the offspring. And so since women tend to select for smarter men, and smarter men produce children with bigger heads earlier in life... It doesnt seem like this problem is going away anytime soon. Luckily we have anesthetics BUT we also have EVOLUTION... Or in this case ADAPTATION. Some moms out there are lucky enough to inherit this mutation which makes the birthing process virtually painless WHATS EVEN MORE INTERESTING, is that compared to other variants in pain associated genes (I have a whole post or video I want to make about that) this mutation doesnt seem to come with any negative side effect. Most pain-resistant genes lead to early death because pain is actually required to alert the body about issues. Some mutants can go days without realizing they have an open wound or burn and by then it could be infected. THIS MUTATION only really seems to affect labor pain. Thats pretty cool! Social Media Friends. This is the time we need you and your support the most. @bp.surfs suffered a blast injury this morning when she was pumping up a board with an industrial compressor before our surf camp. She was thrown backwards by the blast and hit her head on the ground. She has 7 stitches in the back of her head, a concussion, and a carpel fracture from where the compressor hose hit her hand. She was driven to Salida Hospital from BV in an ambulance where the accident happened. After a CT scan and X-rays in Salida they determined she needed to be flown to St. Anthony’s in Denver so she could be assessed by a neurologist. She has air in her skull and brain hemorrhaging from the blast injury. As you all know medical transport and treatments are extremely expensive. The best thing for Brittany from here on out is to ONLY have to worry about HEALING. We can all make sure of this by donating! Conclusion Diets high in seafood, rice, and red meat other than pork and low in refined grains, fried foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, and wheat are leading healthy dietary factors for metabolic health in children. HDS is strongly predictive of CMR factors. Background Identifying leading dietary determinants for cardiometabolic risk (CMR) factors is urgent for prioritizing interventions in children. We aimed to identify leading dietary determinants for the change in CMR and create a healthy diet score (HDS) to predict CMR in children. Methods We included 5676 children aged 6–13 years in the final analysis with physical examinations, blood tests, and diets assessed at baseline and one year later. CMR score (CMRS) was computed by summing Z-scores of waist circumference, an average of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), fasting glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, multiplying by − 1), and triglycerides. Machine learning was used to identify leading dietary determinants for CMR and an HDS was then computed. Results The nine leading predictors for CMRS were refined grains, seafood, fried foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, wheat, red meat other than pork, rice, fungi and algae, and roots and tubers with the contribution ranging from 3.9 to 19.6% of the total variance. Diets high in seafood, rice, and red meat other than pork but low in other six food groups were associated with a favorable change in CMRS. The HDS was computed based on these nine dietary factors. Children with HDS ≥8 had a higher decrease in CMRS (β (95% CI): − 1.02 (− 1.31, − 0.73)), BMI (− 0.08 (− 0.16, − 0.00)), SBP (− 0.46 (− 0.58, − 0.34)), DBP (− 0.46 (− 0.58, − 0.34)), mean arterial pressure (− 0.50 (− 0.62, − 0.38)), fasting glucose (− 0.22 (− 0.32, − 0.11)), insulin (− 0.52 (− 0.71, − 0.32)), and HOMA-IR (− 0.55 (− 0.73, − 0.36)) compared to those with HDS ≦3. Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Dwi Kemaladewi, PhD, only joined UPMC Children’s in 2019. Yet, already she’s making a name for herself. With a big smile and contagious enthusiasm about her work, it’s easy to understand why. Appointed a Mellon Scholar by the hospital’s Richard King Mellon Institute for Pediatric Research and a recipient of a 2019 Children’s Trust grant, Dr. Kemaladewi has built a career around investigating pediatric rare diseases. She studies a debilitating, deadly form of muscular dystrophy called muscular dystrophy type 1A (MDC1A). Kids with MDC1A have mutations in the LAMA2 gene that cause their muscles and other bodily functions to shut down. Children diagnosed with MDC1A lose the ability to walk, and sadly, many do not make it to their teens. Dr. Kemaladewi and her colleagues wondered whether they could improve therapies for patients with MDC1A using genetic technologies. So, they set to work studying a gene called LAMA1. LAMA1 is closely related to LAMA2, but only active in utero. Using cutting-edge CRISPR gene-editing, Dr. Kemaladewi and her collaborators “switched on” LAMA1 in mouse models with MDC1A. The results? Amazingly, the mice given the therapy demonstrated markedly improved motor function and decreased paralysis! “Properties of the Hammer”, a self portrait developed in a darkroom by me in 1993. I was 19 years old, and I knew there was something deeply rotten in the area of Texas I grew up in. Insidious behavior and thoughts can be concealed by Southern pleasantries, the pulpits of churches, and suburban attics. I didn’t understand what white supremacy was in 1993, but I knew there was something invisible operating on my body. I could feel that much. My folks never sat me down to talk about it, but I was starting to piece something together from observing their relationships with white folks over the years. I was never called nigger to my face (like my parents were), but you don’t have to be. There’s a zillion other ways to be called that. I was beginning to get that too. I was naive then and running on pure intuition. My need to express some growing unease came out in my pencil, brush, or camera whether I wanted it to or not. We are often asked about the name of our practice. One can find various definitions of ‘Original Cause’ — the beginning of the universe, the spark that started it all, some seed of religion or spirituality. In our case, the name came to us during a Past Life Regression during our training with Dr. Brian Weiss. Compartment syndrome is a medical emergency and it needs to be recognized early. A similar situation may occur when an IO cannula is deployed in the wrong position or dislodged during the treatment. That is why you would want to make sure your IO device is in place. There are several ways to verify IO placement: 1. Check for aspiration of bone marrow 2. Flush and watch for swelling 3. Are the medications injected via the IO taking effect on the patient? 4. If available, bedside doppler may be effective in correct position confirmation. Early signs of compartment syndrome - Severe pain, swelling and redness of the affected limb Compartment syndrome is a rare complication associated with IO access. It may occur when the cannula is dislodged from the bone or over penetrated it. Therefore, correct location must be verified by aspiration of bone marrow, saline flush and observation of extravasation signs. In the image above is the result of a fasciotomy performed on a patient who had arrived to a field hospital with compartment syndrome, after being trapped under wreckage of an earthquake and rescued. Here is what you are accomplishing: “Short-term, the mother is less likely to have postpartum heamorrhage, less risk of postpartum depression, less chance of anaemia, delayed menses meaning they will have a temporary measure of contraception. The long-term advantages for the mother include less chance of ovarian and breast cancer, less likelihood of suffering from endometriosis, less instances of diabetes and hypertension, and better weight control. For the babies, in the short term, they would have less problems in the GI tract, less instances of respiratory issues such as colds and pneumonia, fewer ear infections, better vision in the long-term, fewer cases of bacterial meningitis, and fewer admissions to the hospital overall. They are also less likely to be absent from work later in life.
