A carotid-cavernous sinus fistula (CCF) is an abnormal connection between an artery in your neck and the network of veins at the back of your eye. These veins at the back of your eye transport blood from your face and brain back to your heart and are located in small spaces behind your eyes called cavernous sinuses. Sometimes an abnormal channel forms between these veins and one of the internal or external carotid arteries that run up each side of your neck. This formation happens as a result of a small tear that sometimes occurs in one of the carotid arteries. If the tear occurs near the veins in the cavernous sinus, an abnormal channel may form between the artery and the network of veins, through which blood may flow. This is called a fistula. A fistula can raise the pressure in your cavernous sinuses, which may compress the cranial nerves located around the cavernous sinuses. This compression may damage the nerve function, which is to control your eye movements. These cranial nerves also allow you to experience sensation in parts of your face and head. The increased pressure caused by the fistula can also affect the veins that drain your eye. This can cause symptoms such as eye swelling and abnormal vision. Symptoms of Carotid-Cavernous Sinus Fistula Indirect CCFs tend to cause fewer, less serious symptoms. This is because of their relatively low rate of blood flow. Direct CCFs usually require more urgent attention. In 2010 I was part of a study which measured the effects meditation has on the brain for long time meditators. It was 3 intense trips throughout the year to the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin. This was research completed by Dr. Richard Davidson and his amazing team. Davidson is best known for his groundbreaking work studying emotion and the brain. A friend and confidante of the Dalai Lama, he is a highly sought after expert and speaker, leading conversations on well-being on international stages such as the World Economic Forum, where he serves on the Global Council on Mental Health. Time Magazine named Davidson one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2006. Spending the days in meditation and going thru a series of what they called stress tests, I was wired up most of the trip and they monitored sleep while I was connected to what seemed like a thousand wires. Each trip included 90 minutes in a full body MRI Machine where I was not allowed to move, as the entire study would be ruined. Finally now we have the results, although I already told them there is nothing up there! Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC). Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) is an allergic reaction of the eye. It occurs when one or several small round bumps (papillae) develop on the underside of the eyelid. The underside of the eyelid is also called the upper tarsal conjunctiva. These bumps develop when the upper tarsus rubs over something foreign in the eye. The term giant refers to the bumps, or papillae, being larger than 1 millimeter (mm) in size. There are two types of GPC, primary and secondary. Both are responses to allergens but have different causes. Primary GPC has two types which are: •vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) •atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) The two types of primary GPC have many similarities. They differ by having different primary causes and the age and manner of symptom onset. Splenic laceration It may not look like much, but this can be a deadly injury if not dealt with quickly and definitively. This injury is also one of the most frequent reasons for requiring emergency surgery after blunt force trauma. The spleen is part of your immune system that besides being a filter for old cells circulating in your blood, it also is the main source of the body’s Complement system, which enhances your body’s ability to fight off a specific type of bacteria. Therefore, while you can live without your spleen, one of the trade offs is that you will require ongoing vaccinations against the most common of these organisms. Gratitude365 - Thankful for making a difference in the lives of newborns, infants, and children EVERYDAY! What do you do for a living? Simply put, I get to read brainwaves of newborns and test the hearing of children. Sounds cool 😎 right? It is so much more. At age 7, I told my mom and dad I would grow up and work with babies who are deaf, like Annie Sullivan and Hellen Keller. I began teaching myself sign language about the same age. Watched movies, learned finger spelling from a book, and traded babysitting for sign language lesson at age 11. Became an interpreter, early intervention provider for deaf and hard of hearing children, teacher for the deaf, started my own non-profit for early intervention, wrote and coordinated the newborn hearing screening law in Kansas and became a pediatric audiologist. I was asked to co-write a newborn hearing screening and diagnostics chapter in a text book. I love, live and breathe pediatric audiology. Every single day I get up and go to work and I am THANKFUL for this opportunity to serve these families. Thankful to make a difference. #Repost @trauma_time・・・ Today’s case we have this severe hand injury! This 15 year old male was playing with some homemade fireworks when...kaboom! The explosion resulted in this severely mangled right hand, which is unfortunately his dominant side. To orient yourself a little better, the pinky is to the left, index to the right, and thumb is completely disarticulated and hanging toward the bottom of the picture. The team opted to amputate the hand at the wrist after extensive examination of the wound. You could argue that the index and pinky fingers had a chance to be salvaged, however, the extent of the surgery would be vast. From this picture, it seems that the damage extends into the wrist, effecting the flexor muscles, which would greatly increase the difficulty of the salvaging. I think they made a great decision to amputate when weighing the risks vs the benefits! This type of injury was one that my parents always warned against every 4th of July. This is a lesson for everyone...leave the fireworking to the professionals, who use mass produced explosives and take all necessary safety precautions! ⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ Don’t forget to tag your friends down in the comment section! Keratoprosthesis is a surgical procedure where a diseased cornea is replaced with an artificial cornea. Traditionally, keratoprosthesis is recommended after a person has had a failure of one or more donor corneal transplants. More recently, a less invasive, non-penetrating artificial cornea has been developed which can be used in more routine cases of corneal blindness. While conventional cornea transplant uses donor tissue for transplant, an artificial cornea is used in the Keratoprosthesis procedure. The surgery is performed to restore vision in patients suffering from severely damaged cornea due to congenital birth defects, infections, injuries and burns. Keratoprotheses are made of clear plastic with excellent tissue tolerance and optical properties. They vary in design, size and even the implantation techniques may differ across different treatment centers. The procedure is done by ophthalmologists, often on an outpatient basis. Although many keratoprostheses have been developed, only four models are currently in commercial use: the Boston keratoprosthesis, Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis (OOKP), AlphaCor and the KeraKlear Artificial Cornea. Its #WorldHeartDay, so I thought I would post this extraordinary photo from 1987 of Dr. Zbigniew Religa monitoring the vital signs of a patient after a 23-hour heart transplant - a procedure many considered impossible. In the lower right, you can see his colleague asleep. The transplant was a success, and the patient outlived Religa. Zbigniew Religa conducted Polands first successful heart transplantation, and in June 1995 he was the first surgeon to graft an artificial valve created from materials taken from human corpses.
