2020 has been a terrible year, but its still far from being the worst in recorded human history. Here are a few bad ones: 1349 was the peak of the Black Death, which killed an estimated 75 to 200 million people in Europe, Eurasia and North Africa. It is considered the deadliest pandemic in human history. 1520 was when smallpox spread across the Americas, killing an estimated 90% of the Indigenous population. It is estimated that 25 to 55 million people perished. 1918 was when the influenza pandemic killed an estimated 50 million people across the globe. As many as 500 million people were infected. These were all terrible years, but many historians believe that the absolute worst was 536 AD. According to medieval historian, Michael McCormick, It was the beginning of one of the worst periods to be alive, if not the worst year. So what exactly happened in 536? Well for starters, a volcano erupted in Iceland, which dimmed the sun for 18 months, causing temperatures to decrease by 1.5 to 2.5 celsius. This led to the coldest decade (536 to 545) in 2,000 years, leading to crop failures and mass starvations in Europe, Mesopotamia and China. In 540 there was another volcanic eruption, this time in Ilopango, El Salvador, which killed tens of thousands of people and decreased global temperatures once again. In 541, the Plague of Justinian began to spread throughout the Mediterranean Basin and would kill 35 to 55% of the population. The plague would greatly weaken the Byzantine Empire after devastating its capital, Constantinople. The natural disasters, crop failures and the plague would go on to decimate Europes economy, which would not recover until 640, more than a century later. Ice core records show that in 640, there was a spike in atmospheric lead pollution which was the result of an increase in silver mining. Silver is found in lead-rich galena ores. During this time, periods of prosperity almost always coincided with increases in lead emissions. The Belle Tout Lighthouse is a decommissioned lighthouse and British landmark located at Beachy Head, East Sussex close to the town of Eastbourne. It has been called Britains most famous inhabited lighthouse because of its striking location and use in film and television. In 1999, the Grade II listed building was moved in one piece to prevent it from succumbing to coastal erosion. In 1986, the BBC purchased the lease to Belle Tout for the filming of mini-series The Life and Loves of a She-Devil and a year later it featured in the James Bond film The Living Daylights. From 1996 the lighthouse was used as a family home and, in 2007, the building was put up for sale again. I cannot believe it’s been 19 years since 9/11. What a memorable day for all the wrong reasons. Like so many people that day in NYC, I left for work before the first plane struck. I lived in Kingsbridge (Bronx) and worked in Brooklyn at the time. On typical day, It would take me 1 1/2 hours to get to work. I would take the number 1 or 9 train to 14th Street and transfer to the F train to Dumbo to @fatbeats When I finally transferred to the F train, the train conductor announced that there are no more trains running in NYC. Keep in mind, I still have no idea the Towers have been struck! Also I had never heard this before. So like everyone I went upstairs to call my office to say I’m going to be late but when I got upstairs not only could I not get through to my office but I also had never seen so many people on the street in NYC. I am still not knowing or aware of what was happening. I was just concerned about getting to work on time. Then I saw a line for a pay phone and stood in it. However, I heard the most horrific scream ever from 6th Ave (I was on 14th), and I went to see what it was. I just happen to look up and literally saw the second Tower fall. Obviously, I was beyond freaked out and still not knowing what was going on!. People all around me were losing their minds! It was straight chaos. Once I collected myself together, I went and sat on someone’s stoop. I was literally talking to myself and trying to figure out what to do! After pulling it together I walked.up the block. Is it what you call Docker? Odessa ... .. Итак, мое морское путешествие в этом году началось с Арабатской стрелки, а закончилось в Одессе. От Азова до Черноморки. . Финальным кадром серии ярких и контрастных пейзажей я решил сделать в самой Одессе. Выбор места был откровенно сложным и концепция финальной работы менялась прямо на ходу. . Изучая локации как в самой Одессе, так и вокруг неё, я понял, что сделать достойный кадр тут сложно, ибо придётся слишком редактировать пейзаж выкидывая лишнее и привнося что-то новое, тем самым создавая иллюзию места которого не существую. . Прогуливаясь от Лонжерона до Посольства Китая я для себя заприметил столь органичные и цветастые контейнеры, которые только сняли с сухогруза. И тут я понял - последнее фото будет не природным или городским пейзажем, это будет абстракция тысяч маленьких блочков лежащих на берегу мор.порта Одессы. - @denis.makogon on Instagram

In August 2011 Washington D.C. Was hit with a 5.8 magnitude earthquake caused cracks and falling debris on the monument. After 33 months the monument was restored to its original state. Over 150 cracks were filled in the monument and all rainwater leaks have been sealed. The elevator inside the monument is back in working order. The entire restoration of the monument cost $15 million dollars. Damaged marble was replaced with stone from the same Maryland quarry as the monuments original quarry. - @washingtonmonumentdc on Instagram
TRUMP’s TWIN TOWERS II Following September 11th, many New Yorkers sought to rebuild the Twin Towers, but with more structural strength. In the 2003 design competition, Team Twin Towers proposed rebuilding the towers with bioterrorism sensors and fireproof ceramic polymer coatings around the columns, floor beams and stairs. Similarly, the 2005 Twin Towers II proposal was nearly identical to the original design by Minoru Yamasaki, although with 115 stories—5 floors taller than the original. An above-ground memorial would have occupied the footprints of the original towers and three twelve-story postmodern buildings replacing 3, 4, and 5 WTC. The project was sponsored by Donald Trump who labeled the SOM/David Childs-designed Freedom Tower as disgusting. The Freedom Tower was the winner of an international design contest sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. In media appearances, Trump criticized the proposed Freedom Tower, saying “It doesn’t represent what we want to have represented. What I want to see built is the World Trade Center stronger and maybe a story taller, and that’s what everybody wants.” Should the original Twin Towers have been rebuilt?
