Word on the street is that this week is #ClimateWeek and #CattleWeek. Two topics that work perfectly together!⠀ ⠀ Here are some ways that #AZBeef ranchers are everyday environmentalists:⠀ 1. Maintain and introduce habitats as homes for numerous endangered and threatened species including Southwestern Willow Flycatcher, and Chiricahua Leopard Frog. ⠀ 2. Utilize rotational grazing in which cattle are moved to different pastures every few days to prevent overgrazing. ⠀ 3. Maintain proper nutrients in soil by regularly analyzing soil samples. This also helps to determine if nutritional supplements are needed to help meet cattle’s nutritional needs.⠀ 4. Plant grasses on highly erodible land, thereby conserving soil. For example, Arizona mines seed the sides of the mines and feed and graze livestock to help to compact the soil and fertilize with manure. ⠀ 5. Where can I see waterfalls? - Its a common question at Zion, but for most of the year, the answer is: There really arent many. You may have seen photos of beautiful, large waterfalls in Zion Canyon. These torrents certainly make for incredible scenery in this dramatic sandstone environment. However, for sightseers and photographers that are witnesses, they usually have some pretty fortunate timing. After all, Zion is a dry, desert environment. Large waterfalls tend to occur either: 1) for a few weeks in spring during annual snowmelt, or 2) after rain as ephemeral or temporary waterfalls, usually only lasting a few hours. For the rest of the year, the only consistent falling water sources in Zion Canyon involve a trickle at Lower Emerald Pools, a small vertical stream in The Narrows named Mystery Falls, and a few small seeps and river cascades. If you are lucky enough to visit while there are waterfalls, The Temple of Sinawava and Emerald Pools trail system are some of the best places to watch. Its National Park Week!!! Did you know there are over 150 #NationalHistoricLandmarks located in national park units? These four structures were designed by architect and interior designer Mary Jane Colter, built by Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, and managed by its concessioner, the Fred Harvey Company. Hopi House (1905), modeled after a Hopi pueblo, was built to merchandise Indigenous handicrafts in a historically accurate environment. Hermits Rest, a refreshment stand, and the Lookout, both dating from 1914, were designed to appear as if they had grown out of the rocky landscape. Colters last major structure on the South Rim, Desert View Watchtower, was completed in 1932, long after the establishment of @grandcanyonnps . Modeled after an Anasazi tower, it has notable interior spaces based on circular forms. All four structures respect their incomparable settings and reflect the cultural heritage of the area. We often get questions about how supporting the Mesa Verde Foundation is different than just going to @MesaVerdeNPS and paying your entrance fee..... . Well, the federal government cannot and does not completely fund our national parks. Financial assistance is needed to maintain and improve parks for present and future generations. Most of the federal funds are used for day-to-day maintenance and operation of structures, buildings, and roads. There’s not much left over for preserving the very things that make Mesa Verde special. Private and public sector collaboration is important throughout the National Park Service and provides important support for parks like Mesa Verde to preserve the park’s unique cultural heritage.
