I love the term “pleasure practice”. First off “masturbation” does not sound sexy at all! Actually, the Latin meaning of the word is “to pollute your hand”. 😑. No wonder why we are riddled with so much shame and guilt as a society! ✨ When you move from masterbation to a pleasure practice you are creating a space for more love and play within your own being. It becomes an honoring of your beautiful body, full of arousal and eroticism. It’s a time for you to revel and explore in your essence, with the life force energy we all come from! It’s a deconstructing of all the density we carry around sexual energy. Just like yoga or meditation, it’s a practice. There is always room for more understanding and growth of who we are at our core. This doesn’t mean the practice is always incredibly orgasmic and amazing because it’s a process of awareness and deep connection. It’s discovering your programs around sex and sexuality that you haven’t realized. It’s learning the ways in which you weren’t actually taking care of or honoring yourself. It’s embodying your core essence and self acceptance. ✨ In my current coaching certification we have weekly practices, each week with a different aim and focus. Sometimes I’m not in the mood. Sometimes I’m not feeling myself, sometimes life is to distracting and I don’t feel like putting aside the time. Yet it is such an empowering process to really create a sacred, honoring, loving space for myself. When I go into the practice I never know what to expect, it ranges from mind blowing, peaceful, loving, heart breaking, emotional, stagnant, revealing, erotic, expansive, and everything in between. Meet Sonal, one of our incredible emergency first responders. She provides urgent resources and assistance to survivors, so they can overcome adversity and build a stronger future. In her time with Mercy Corps, shes supported responses to numerous emergencies around the world, including the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Sonal says that when she first started, working with a diverse group of first responders made me feel like the world was my home. For her, crisis response is not about just giving shelter, its about how we do our work and how we connect with the rest of the communities. Sonal will be features as part of a new exhibition at @imperialwarmuseums. Happy Thursday Friends! Today I was talking on a stream how it’s ok to find your own work rhythm. I admire people who can get up at 5 in the morning, but it just doesn’t work for me. I am absolutely not a morning person. At the same time the evening time gives me the most inspiration, I can literally see design in front of my eyes when I close them in the evening. Everybody has their own rhythm. It doesn’t mean that you’re lazy, it doesn’t mean that everybody else is better than you only because they wake up at 4:30 and by the time you wake up they already went for a run, had breakfast and answered their emails. It just means that you’re listening to your body and you’re caring about its purpose, to be healthy and to serve you 100%. Well-being has been such an important topic for me recently, because I have noticed how important it is to collect your own energy before sharing it with everybody. I love sharing and inspiring everybody around me. This is my purpose and it can only be served if I am feeling well. Good vibes only my friends, that’s the secret! Be healthy, be productive whenever you need to be. Be it in the morning or be it in the evening. Well . . . it’s life in the country 🌾I feel like I’ve gone back to my childhood roots as a refugee. This time fleeing from my city of Angels to my future home. As a child we fled with only the clothes on our backs. S/o to our amazing volunteers🙌🏾💚This past Sunday we had Jenita and her niece Christina come out to the farm and get a first hand experience in the art of harvesting. On this particular day we cropped out the last eggplant bushes and harvested some of our Malabar spinach seeds for saving and planting next season. It’s always wonderful to see people come out to our space and get a taste of the growing and cultivation process. The concept of food has a communal lens that must be nourished and fostered in order to change the narrative of despair between health and wellness within our communities. Growing food is a pillar in that initiative and we give thanks for being able to share our knowledge and experiences with others on this journey of growth and understanding. I’m taking a short break from social media to recharge my batteries. All of the BS has me a bit stressed these days and it’s important for me to model self care for my daughter as well as all of you 😘. Initially I had planned to peace out until after the election - but this morning I changed my mind. I will be taking a respite just for the next 6 days and then I will come back starting Sunday, October 4th to share a daily dose of kindness for the 30 days leading up to the election. Our team of volunteers quickly mobilized their efforts to carry out an emergency response, assess the damages and establish a rehabilitation program in 2 severely damaged areas: Karantina and Mar Mikhael. Our aim today is to rehabilitate 30 buildings and homes in these neighborhoods and guarantee a safe return home to 150 families. sooooo as much as I have loved #socialmedia since about 2013 when I really started to get the hang of #instagram I’m starting to loath it a little... Guilty about that weekend binge? 🍔🍪🍩🧁🥂 I’m here to tell you that when Monday rolls around, reverting back to restricting calories to extremely low or unsustainable as a diet during the week “to make up for it” or just continue to diet is not the answer.. I know I just preached about the benefits of whole, “clean” nutrient dense foods and I don’t want to confuse THAT with unhealthily restricting calories especially through only “clean eating” or viewing foods as “good” or “bad” When you restrict calories or “bad” / non-nutritious food or a prolonged period of time the desire to: 1. Feel satiated increases 2. Binge on “bad” food increases and the cycle repeats... The weekend binge on high calorie foods and drinks could be hindering your progress due to the calorie content consumed especially with any metabolic adaptions from dieting.. 😫 WHAT YOU SHOULD OPT FOR INSTEAD: 1. More reasonable (no more than 30% below maintenance) calorie deficit during the week 🐠🥝🌮🍒🍞 2. Structured weekend refeeds (double carbs) 🍪🍪🍩🍩🧁🧁to let you enjoy those extra carbs from a date night dinner or whatever 3. Any Aultmore fans in the house? Aroma comes out swinging with a big punch of malt and dried fruits that tow in some lighter sweeter notes; Palate follows along in almost the exact same path but with more of a banana chips fruitiness than an orchard fruitiness; Finish is quite nice and hits a great balance with the oak coming through so much. The best Aultmore I’ve had was that sherry bomb Sovereign 9 yo Aultmore from a couple of years ago, but this… this ain’t bad. In the queue I have a 1996 Connoisseur’s Choice Glen Elgin that’s also held up amazingly well over 5 1/2 years thanks to using wine preserver. But like the Glen Elgin, this 2000 Connoisseur’s Choice Aultmore has changed since opening – though entirely for the better. I spent the weekend at a hotel ten minutes from my house. Alone. Im thinking about all we hold as women and mothers. Sometimes it would be nice if someone else would take over all the responsibilities. On being a woman and mom: How much of these responsibilities do we really NEED to carry? My hunch after 15 years of mothering and partnering is: not as much as we think. Books have been written, podcasts have been recorded, and corner booths in wine bars and coffee shops have held sacred conversations hashing out this very topic. How do we start to gather tools to find our way to setting boundaries, letting go of what could’ve been, radically accepting what actually is? It is always strange to arrive after a long and arduous expedition, especially one like the #NorthPoleCrossing with @MikeHornExplorer. There is a sadness to it too, everything you long for is there, and at the same time, when you arrive there is suddenly nothing more to long for. Thats when it’s so important to remember the small things that matters in life, things we all take for granted. You never know when its nothing more to long for. We were extremely hungry, and finished only with one bag of lunch ration each (last photo). First thing we did was to go down to the mess room and eat. The chef had prepared a dinner consisting of apaches soup, mutton and chocolate mousse for dessert. We both had two servings of everything. The next thing was taking a shower. It was a shock to see my body after three months of hardship, muscles visible, ribs protruding under my skin. It almost hurled to feel the first rush of warm water over my body. I sat in the shower for about an hour. There was no weight scale onboard Lance, but looking the photos I think I lost 12-15 kilos. That also explained why I got increasingly more cold towards the end of the trip, when we started to ski 12hours and more long days. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to add a little bit more light in people’s lives and impact this world in a positive way. My core mission and question to myself has always been ‘what can I do to be part of other people’s lives and impact it in a beautiful way.’ After ten years in the corporate world (where I couldn’t shine my light the way I wanted to), I decided to leave the “security” that came with it, and start doing things exactly the way I wanted to. It all started off with a blog, which led to a business, which made me 0 money at first (nothing but losses the first 14 months) but I kept at it and made more than a living after some time. I opened my styling company @fabstylingservices where my mission was to help women look their absolute best and minimize closets that had taken over entire households. Along the way, I discovered that even though I helped women look their absolute best, many still suffered from deep rooted programming of low confidence, lack of self worth, self love and the ability to believe in themselves and the magic they can create. These deep conversations I’d have with them, led to my current business, @iam.journal. I always like paying attention to what people complain about, where there’s a problem, there’s a way to help and a business idea! The point of this caption is to share with you that the biggest lesson I’ve learned during all these changes and going from corporate girl to business after business, is that, if you want to go after your heart’s desires and do something different, you will throw some people off guard (that are used to a version of you). You will ruffle some feather, and you will shed some people along the way. Unintentionally, even. Not because you’re doing anything wrong, but because often, our actions bring out insecurities within other people. Moving on and doing things different are acts of courage. Perhaps you’re doing things they wish they had the courage to do. Perhaps your actions are subconsciously pointing out their inactions? Your actions will make some people think of their inactions! On Wednesday, the Trump administration announced that US citizens visiting Cuba will no longer be able to bring back tobacco or rum and won’t be able to stay in hotels owned by the Cuban government. The administration is also eliminating blanket authorization for Americans visiting Cuba to attend sporting events, cultural performances or for professional meetings and conferences. In eight years of living here I have yet to meet a Cuban who didn’t think Americans visiting was a good thing. The announcement comes at the same time as literally no one is able to visit Cuba because of the pandemic which has forced the island to close its borders. So why do it now if it won’t have any impact? Does anyone who really follows Cuba think this will cause the Cuban government to fall or change their policies? A Look back to some highlights from last weeks Scotland staycation adventure. • Everyday I carried this mini in my pack like a talisman all 96 miles of The West Highland Way to celebrate the end of the walk. I cant even begin to explain how good it was to crack it when I was finished! • The walk runs over a lot of diverse terrain, starting just outside Glasgow and finishing in Fort William. I experienced all weathers, took in the most incredible scenes and met many lovely people along the way. Every evening I was lucky to be joined by an old friend and my wing woman Ruth, who always greeted me with a cheer and a dram/cup of tea in hand! • This year celebrates 40 years since The Way was first established, voted by National Geographic as one of the worlds top 10 walks, in 1980 it was the first of its kind in Scotland and is typically completed by around 17000 people a year. We are going through a period of drought, but the trees we planted with PUR Projet have helped to protect our land and soil erosion has slowly stopped. The trees planted shield my coffee from the sun, but also from hail, and the falling leaves prevent my soil from eroding while nourishing it. Well well well, it’s not every day a kitten shows up in front of our office building! This little guy was found by our associate right at the front of our office building this morning. He was scared, shivering, skinny and had a tick. There was no mom or other siblings in sight and by his size we assessed he was around 7-8 weeks old and fully weaned (scroll to see the teefers!). We took him in, fed him some KMR 2nd step Kitten Weaning Food. He was then taken to the vet to get an exam and flea and tick prevention. He appears to be healthy, just a bit underweight. He went home with our associate and a kitten foster from our local rescue is on their way to pick him up! He will be scanned for a microchip and held for a week to see if anyone claims him. If they don’t, he will be neutered and up for adoption! Another kitten off the streets that will be neutered and live a happy life in a loving home! Yesterday we had the honor of spending the day with Petronel Nieuwoudt and the @careforwild team. Petronel is a legend and an iconic figure in rhino conservation in South Africa. Her approach to rhino conservation is powerful and seeing this approach in action is absolutely inspiring. What is the biggest threat to rhinos? PEOPLE. Currently the communities perception is that rhinos are enjoyed by white, privileged tourists and celebrities. Instead heritage should be the focus and the community needs to be part of the rhino conservation solution. Protecting rhinos is about community goodwill. Strong community relationships, is stronger than any security fence. Confession: I’ve always been extremely conscious about my smile. You will hardly find any pictures of me smiling with my teeth showing. Reason? That insanely irritating and never disappearing discolouration (damn you coffee!) yea it sucks! I must have tried every toothpaste brand promising white teeth available and I even tried bleaching them once but all in vain. Regular toothpaste is full of ingredients that can actually be harmful to your health (Ever wondered why toothpaste isn’t supposed to be swallowed?) Also some toothpastes contain decorative PLASTIC! It wasn’t until I stopped using regular toothpaste that I realised how synthetic it actually tasted and felt (who can blame us, we have been told to use it from the appearance of our first tooth). On August 18th I defended my preliminary oral and written exams which now makes me a PhD Candidate, I would say ✅ but instead I’ve actually paused...I’ve had to embrace what it means for me to rest and also continue to acknowledge that some of my exhaustion is inundated by layers of grief. This constant push of a racial capitalist system...I finished my exams and jumped right into the fall semester foolishness at the university...Structural and systemic violence in this city is insidious. On the streets, at Florida State University, local and federal governments, and even at times in the home I live in and it’s exhausting and terrifying . . . Today I read an impact statement at our graduate student union bargaining zoom meeting because face to face classes have impacted me and other instructors in ways that appear to be ignored by the university. There’s no substitute for justice, liberation, love and peace...these systems aren’t working towards any of those things. There are folks who are tho—there are collectives who are and I’m grateful for my folks most of whom live far away that help to uplift me or provide a distant shoulder to cry on . . . And so I will always turn to what grows me, what brings me joy and is rooted in love and healing—Rooted Resistance—Embodied Liberation for the queer and trans* folks of the global majority—All Power to the People . . . For those that are new here or didn’t see our stories, I had a Grand Mal seizure and had to be rushed to the hospital about two weeks ago. Since that moment, it has been a huge life adjustment. Sad, exhausting, followed by a lot of continuing sickness. Seizures are incredibly disruptive to your body so it has taken time to heal and understand everything. Unfortunately this business revolves around my epilepsy and for that, I am incredibly sorry to all you. It is why I work so hard when I am healthy, so you guys can be as full of fantasy feelings for as long as possible. In 2019 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bugimotwa Growers Cooperative Society to manage their coffee washing station. ⠀ ⠀ Our goal is to run the washing station, while training the community in its operation and management. We hope that at the end of our lease we can step back and become nothing more than a customer of a thriving community run washing station. ⠀ ⠀ The washing station has been idle since the 1990s and is in considerable disrepair. None of the fermentation or drying infrastructure was functional. I haven’t been on this account in a while. I felt like I needed to take a step back from the all-consuming nature of this illness and this page, and pretend to be a bit more ‘normal’. • And it has been great 💫. Yes I have had ups and downs, and trying to forget about the illness doesn’t make it go away, but it’s been nice to get back to doing normal things - hanging w pals, going on hols, meeting new people etc. • This illness can consume your thoughts 24/7 and I think it is so so important to get away from it when we can ✈️. Get away from the ‘I should be doing this’, ‘I cant do that’, ‘I need to do more research’ and just be. The mindset shift is really important to getting better otherwise our fight or flight response just remains activated ❌. • I don’t just forget about my protocol though. I’m still sticking to the supplements, techniques, diet etc, but am taking myself out of an ‘I am ill’ frame of mind to a ‘I’m a person trying to enjoy life’ frame of mind. Being joyful and having fun ☀️ 🌊 🥤 🏏🏝 is just as good at getting you in to the healing state as being calm is - and I always forget this!! Never feel guilty for having fun instead of meditating or whatever - they are both equally as good at activating the parasympathetic nervous system. In fact, it has been scientifically proven that positive emotions (happiness, joy and optimism) boost the immune system (thank u @davidrhamiltonphd) 💪. • And in one of these happy, ‘normal’ moments - on a lovely coastal walk in Cornwall - I found a teeny cafe that does loads of DF, GF and refined sugar treats, without even being a specialist cafe, showing that the world is waking up to gut health and making me feel like I’m not the only person in the world who has to stick to this diet for a while! Being able to enjoy something and it still be within my protocol was so liberating 💫 and made me feel that little bit more normal. • Hope everyone is well and one step closer to recovery ⭐️. Washing stations in Ethiopia are generally referred to by the names of the local kebeles (villages) so there are multiple sites with the names “Bukisa.” Atlas’ lots are from sites operated by a gentleman by the name of Girma Gurara (pictured here), and are comprised from the harvests of around 1,200 smallholder farmers from the area. Its obvious from the cup that there is attention to detail in every step of the production process. Notes of tangerine, ginger and hibiscus with rose and citrus zest create a nuanced, aromatic, and satisfying profile. During our most recent visit (February 2019), we were blown away by the tidiness of the facilities and excellent condition of the equipment. The de-pulping machinery and fermentation tanks were pristine, and the drying beds in fantastic condition. We were also inspired by the teamwork of the staff at this washing station. While washing coffee, groups work together with long wooden paddles to stir up the fermenting parchment before rinsing through the concrete channels (to ensure uniform removal of loose mucilage). Meanwhile, another several dozen workers were sorting drying parchment coffee on raised beds. The cup profile of this coffee is exceptional, but it is this level of teamwork and care invested in the coffee by the farmers delivering to Bukisa that sets it apart.
