If you were holding out hope for a 2020 race poster, you can thank the Blair-Brown family. Due to the challenges associated with shipping a poster as part of our participant kit, it just wasn’t in the cards this year. And then, we heard Ryder Brown’s story. Three-year-old Ryder Gordon Brown passed away on January 18, 2015, following a brief illness while visiting his grandparents in Falmouth. Since then, members of Ryder’s family have run the New Balance Falmouth Road Race as “Team RGB,” decked out in his favorite color - orange. In Ryder’s honor, the “pin” on this year’s poster design is orange. One member of Team RGB is Ryder’s cousin, Megan Blair. At age 13, Megan began running Falmouth with Team RGB and fundraising for Boston Children’s Hospital, where Ryder was treated. Now beginning her freshman year at Fairfield University, Megan convinced her father, Brendan, to join her for this year’s At-Home Edition. In order to thank Megan for getting him back up and running, and to celebrate her 6th FRR, Brendan reached out to the race team about creating a poster as a surprise for Megan. Inspired by Brendan and his family - and their love and support of the race - we have worked with his vision to create an official 2020 poster to remember the year when we ran together, but apart. 3 YEARS OLD TODAY!! There’s more to Strange Hymns than you know. It had 7 producers as a result of our highly frustrating & totally confused time on a major label. (Kids, the money’s good but we don’t recommend it). Nobody had a clue what to do with us, and so they did the right (easy) thing and dropped us. So rather than disband disheartened with no album we thought getting on with it was a better idea. So we did. We took the 4 songs from different sessions the label trialed with different producers, we remixed 2 old demos & with only enough money (probably not even enough) in the bank we booked Echo Zoo Studios in Eastbourne in the spring of 2017, and battered out Dreamers, Sundial, You & Me and Bring Me To Light in 3.5 days. Done. I guess determination got it over the line in such a short time. That and the kindness of Mikey Rowe & Andy Britton. The thing we like about it most is that it somehow doesn’t sound like 7 producers. We got to work with great people and we’ll always be thankful for that. So stick it on. September 26, marks the 3rd anniversary at HQ. Ordinarily wed be planning a special event with readings, maybe trivia, and cocktail specials. But this year is different. . Weve shared in some special moments with all of you here. The positivity and resilience of the community is something special to behold, and were grateful to you for making this space what it is. Well never forget Vada Azeems surprise wedding proposal, or when Hanif Abdurraqib, Eve Ewing, Sarah Kaye, and Clint Smith performed in front of a packed house. Or when Tom came up with the brilliant idea to host an Election Night Viewing Party for the mid-terms, and a gazillion people packed into our modest space. In March of 2012 my friends, The National, invited me to be the music director for a gig called The Bridge Session, produced by voter registration group, Headcount. This concert brought together some of my favorite New York musicians and buds and paired them with one of my heroes, Bob Weir. We collaborated on a dream setlist and quickly got down to work. It’s safe to say that playing this music, with these people very much changed my life for the positive. Something about the music of the Grateful Dead seems to always act as a guiding force for me. I’m compelled by a sense of truth in the songs and the way they need to be performed/played down w/ ears wide open. A couple years after this meeting, Weir and i embarked on another life affirming adventure making a record together called, Blue Mountain. The Victory🔥Tour 1984. Victory Tour was my first wardrobe job and Tour. Bill Whitten hired me as an assistant and eventually suggested me for the job as Michaels dresser. I never saw that coming. I remember the first time I met Michael. We were at a rehearsal studio and I just said “it’s nice to meet you - I’ve heard a lot about you “ Thank God he laughed! What do you say that he hasn’t heard? Michael didn’t do a “Thriller” Tour. The Victory Tour was it. And it was the last Tour with all the Brothers. It was only 6 months and only the U.S. But all Sold Out Stadiums. Exciting doesn’t even begin to describe it. Bill designed 3 cases of costumes for Michael. Michael picked his favorites and rarely switched them up. But he did wear this red Elvis jacket only once. And threw it into the audience!! Bill got Michael to wear those black and white striped pants Opening night. Michael hated them. We stumbled across this tasty lo-fi house bootleg by Hush Hush reworking Crave You. It reminded us of the mid-2000s blog-house era that we founded Flight Facilities upon, uploading our own edits and bootlegs that would form a catalogue online and in our DJ sets. Another thrilling design project I’m very proud of. Pasadena Playhouse, RAGTIME. 2019. I concept designed Houdini’s “reveal” box for Act 1 and his Metamorphosis trunk prop for Act 2 in addition to playing the role. These pieces were integrated into Scenic Designer Tom Buderwitz’s incredible set design of shifting museum crates and constructed by the fantastic Playhouse shop crew. The “reveal” box was an alternative to the more traditional Houdini entrance of his flying in upside down from the proscenium by his feet, straitjacket and all. An entrance that both the Broadway productions have done in the past and to great effect! The beautiful revival of RAGTIME that I did on Broadway in 2009 had that more traditional approach. For Pasadena, Director David Lee wanted a way to give Houdini an impressive entrance without flying. My solution? An elevated museum crate, dead center, innocuous amidst the rest of the set. When triggered however, it accordions open, its front panel folding down like a three hinged drawbridge, revealing Harry, suspended upside down from a reinforced ankle bar, mid-escape. Once freed, He pulls up and leaps from the box onto the deck to deliver his introduction! Hanging upside down alone in a pitch black coffin sized box waiting for my cue was an exciting and anxiety inducing experience. In Act 2, Harry and Evelyn Nesbit attempt a performance of Houdini’s famous Metamorphosis trick. What is intended as an elegant switch fumbles badly as Evelyn haphazardly flops out of the box. We created a slightly oversized version of the traditional trunk using the original design specs lent to me from legendary magic designer, Jim Steinmeyer. We wanted this version to be more comical and larger than life, accentuating a magic trick “gone wrong”. The actual trunk size is much smaller and a truly an incredible trick to behold! Houdini would make an impossible switch with a tied up assistant in the box under his feet. For this production, we sacrificed structural authenticity for theatrical comedy, rightfully so. @pasadenaplayhouse #magic #design - @darthschrader99 on Instagram
