Something doesn’t have to be perfect to be right, and songs and songwriters are malleable shifting things that can’t always be pinned down. — Before I started the lettering for this new collection of unreleased Townes recordings, art director @chunkletindustries suggested I look to the famous lettering for the Heartworn Highways documentary/album for inspiration. It’s great lettering evocative of that era. But all the photos available for the layout were casual, personal snapshots, taken at small bars or venues later in Townes’ life. And from what I was told, these are more personal, intimate recordings (I haven’t heard the record yet). So instead of giving the lettering the fully rendered treatment as for a proper album, I thought it made sense to simply do a pretty good sketch in a classic honky tonk style. Henry agreed this was the right road to go down and that’s where it ended up. There’s no big production to the recordings, so the text follows suit. — I left in some incomplete or abandoned ideas for flourishes, lines where I was trying to find shapes, and other relics of the process. In places there are proportions and balance that are a bit “off” and I purposefully didn’t go back to correct them. That’s how the letters got played this time around. If I ever had another time to play with this group of words they might look a bit different; maybe better, maybe not; a little looser or tighter in spots; the lilt of their arcs might be go higher or lower; the rhythm of the verticals might shift; some new connections (ligatures) attempted or found. What separates lettering from type is that, like a great song, it never comes out the same way twice. — It was hard to keep a lid on this one the last few months. Very stoked to have a new song out! I remember writing this song when the four of us lived in a house in West Hills together. It was one of the songs we tracked when we were recording Mystic Truth, but we felt like it had its own unique vibe. I’m pumped to have it out in the world!
