Happy birthday to our wonderful @sammyreeve today. 19 years old and swimming out into the big world. This was his birthday gift. 🙃His first (scheduled) appointment with his new cardiologist the amazing Dr Rachael Cordina in Sydney. Linda and I were planning a post consult dinner and celebration in Sydney but with Covid and borders it wasn’t to be sadly. Thanks to sis @stellareeve for stepping in to be there with him. She always has his back. Going from being a @heartkids into the adult world of CHD is a massive step. We are very proud of the strength of Sammy, his extraordinary resilience and ability to roll with it all over the years. This is Dana Scatton. After 7 and a half months of being pregnant, seventeen year old Dana was diagnosed with DIPG. Sadly, she gained her angel wings at 4 am this morning after celebrating her daughters first birthday in January. When diagnosed with cancer Dana was told she had a 0% chance of survival. Never thought how strange this time would turn out to be, but Lee arrived last Saturday amid rain and national lockdown. Birth was a wild experience but everyone is healthy and safe at home now. Glad to have something positive to focus on right now and very grateful to have all that I do. Phoenix stole many of our hearts this summer as we cheered her on in her recovery, and it is with broken hearts that we are mourning her sudden and untimely death. Phoenix passed away unexpectedly just after 3:00pm on Saturday, September 19th 2020. After surviving her amputation surgery and overcoming the brief infection that followed, she was finally out of immediate danger. She even moved into a tiny cabin to live with us when she first returned from her amputation surgery so we could keep a close eye on her. Once she was in stable condition she moved outside, but she still preferred human company to that of her sheep friends. Every morning she would joyfully frolic and bounce out of the barn to greet us, and then she would happily roll around the lawn in her wheelchair for most of the day. When she was small enough to sit on my lap in the car, I used to take her into town because she loved car rides. Phoenix and I used to take walks around Kingston where she would brighten people’s days with her friendly personality. Despite an incredibly difficult beginning, Phoenix was a fighter who rose up again to become a happy lamb who touched many hearts. She was a kindred spirit, constantly kindling joy and spreading it to those around her. She was our little buddy, and we will miss her. Recently we noticed she was struggling to adjust to an increased nutritional intake of grain, but we did not expect this to result in abdominal bloating that would prove fatal. The veterinarian explained that Phoenix’s condition had progressed too quickly and there was little hope of saving her. Shortly after the veterinarian arrived, Phoenix died in my arms. Phoenix has certainly taught us lessons in resilience, strength, and hope. For many of us she was a shining light during a dark and difficult year, and I feel so fortunate that I was able to care for her until the end. Without your help Phoenix would not have survived more than a week or so, but thanks to all of your support she lived here happily with us for five months. For those of you who have donated to help with her medical bills, or have been cheering for Phoenix, we thank you and we are so sorry she is gone. ❤️🐑 - @kaylifergramsby on Instagram

Guess who’s back in the hospital 🤦🏽♂️ Melissa update (for friends and family) Monday night Melissa was admitted to the ICU at primary Children’s Hospital. The good news is. She tested negative for Covid. The bad news is she has pneumonia. We caught it in the early stages. And they will hopefully have her moved out of ICU into a regular room soon. If you missed out, here’s the 411: We’ve been radio silent on here these past few weeks, because I, (Fiona, director of our socials) had to take a mental health break. By break, I mean I had to step away COLD TURKEY from the biz to heal my anxiety. Not being anxious because my full time job, in the words of my friend Heather. The pandemic pushed the generalized anxiety disorder I’d been ignoring for years into THE DANGER ZONE 🚨 I only gave myself notice because I was in so much pain— physical pain! First, I thought it was a UTI, then kidney stones then anemia then thyroid problems then lupus + on + on... but all tests kept coming back normal. Turns out I was having panic attacks every single day.... I felt like I was dying. Fear paralyzes me. And I lost the joy in my life + didn’t know how to go forward. Thankfully my PCP (dear friend) recognized my severe anxiety + took me to a mental hospital for treatment. Today, I graduated from my Partial Hospitalization Program! Though I’ve still got a long way to grow, I feel a world of difference from the woman I was sobbing in the car on the way to the hospital 4 weeks ago 🌷 I’m not back at work yet + probs won’t be active on here much in the next 2 weeks. Social media can be a terrible thing when you have imposter syndrome, perfectionism, self esteem issues, depression, negative automatic thoughts, intense worry, neglect your own self-care, etc. I spent the vast majority of my life lifting up others while never filling my own tank. BUT! I’m learning + using tools to positively cope and build myself up ❤️ Whew! VULNERABILITY 🥴 I’m sharing my story because it might help one of you know you aren’t alone when you think life is too much to bear. You aren’t alone in any of this, I promise. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to take a break. It’s okay to say no. This is the truth. Your needs are real, valid, honorable. Vandaag is het een jaar terug dat ik mijn ruggenwervel op twee plaatsen brak. Wat een heftige tijd was dat. Misschien nog wel meer voor mijn omgeving dan voor mijzelf (voordeeltje van aan de morfine zitten). Wat ik me het meeste herinner is het intense gemis van Sem. Van 24/7 samen werd dat opeens een of twee bezoekuurtjes per dag. Ook de onzekerheid, wat de reden was waarom ik niet meer kon lopen en plassen, was vrij angstaanjagend. Die ervaring en periode heeft me laten zien wat echt belangrijk is: samenzijn. Hierdoor ben ik ook echt bewuster gaan leven, momenten pakken. Toen ik in het ziekenhuis lag kreeg ik ook ontzettend veel respect voor de mensen in de zorg. Daar bedoel ik niet de artsen mee, maar toch vooral de verpleging. Dag en nacht waren ze voor iedereen aan het rennen en vliegen. En dat voor een salaris waar velen van ons hun neus voor op zouden halen. Terwijl ik daar lag, volledig afhankelijk van anderen, besefte ik me dat deze mensen, die in mijn ogen écht helden zijn, veel meer verdienen. Niet heel lang daarna kwam het corona virus en moesten ze nog harder rennen. Dat is een van de redenen dat ik het zo belangrijk vind dat we er samen voor zorgen dat de IC’s niet weer in 1 keer volstromen dit herfstseizoen. Los van wat je van de maatregelen vind, ook ik heb bij bepaalde dingen echt wel mijn vraagtekens, dat is een ander verhaal. Politicians are not our saviors. They are not saints. Rarely, they are good people with conviction for their beliefs. And a few times in an era, they can be prophets for an ideology that changes the discourse forever. Bernie Sanders - while not a perfect man, is a prophet for policies that value human life and dignity, that champion the marginalized, and that view government through the lens of empathy and compassion. His critics dismissed him as loud and uncompromising, but Ill remind every evangelical that shuttered at this Jewish mans Socialism that that is what prophets do. Theyre abrasive and loud because theyre trying to wake you up. You dont know youre in bondage until someone rattles the cage. Thats what Bernie was always trying to do: to wake up an already dissatisfied and disillusioned American electorate to the injustices levied against them - and, more importantly - against those around them. And I think, more than any politician in my lifetime, he succeeded. Bernie Sanders has paved the way for a fundamental shift in American politics. Before he ran in 2016, Universal Healthcare, A Green New Deal, Free College, a 15 dollar minimum wage, and aggressive campaign finance reform were all pie-in-the-sky ideas to a skeptical and out-of-touch Democratic party. He financed his campaign in a way never before seen in modern American politics. He was ahead of his time when he started his political career, and he is still ahead of the complacent moderate establishment he challenged with his run. Often, those who are ahead of their time do not see the triumph of their mission. Millions of people were ready for his movement, but millions of people were not. But this is not the end. Bernie is the John the Baptist of Progressive political revolution. The One who follows him will strengthen his movement and broaden his coalition and make good on the promise of an America for everyone. But The One is not the candidate who wins with this platform: it is everyone who continues fighting, who keeps writing and calling and campaigning for the movement, not the man. ‘My mom was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) when she was 37 years old. PBC is a disease of the bile ducts that leads to eventual cirrhosis of the liver. There is no cure for her disease, but years of trial drugs slowed its progression. In October of 2017, my moms disease had progressed enough that she was placed on the transplant list. The day she was placed on the list I called and requested to be tested as a possible donor. After months of testing & imaging, I was approved as a donor at the end of February 2018. 10 days later, on March 6, 2018, I donated 59% of my liver to my mom. The surgery was a huge success. I was home after 5 days, she was home after 10. The day after surgery her symptoms were gone and she felt better than she could remember feeling in a long time. Recovery was hard, but we leaned on and supported each other. It has almost been a year and my mom remains infection, rejection and complication free ❤️ I am also now 7 months pregnant with our first baby, and my moms third grand baby! This morning we had mollies follow up appointment with her new cardiologist in florida for her ASD (atrial septal defect). He shared that it is still moderate and we will go back in a year for a follow up. At some point Mollie May have to have a heart procedure to fix the defect, but that likely won’t be until she is at least 5 years old. There’s still a tiny chance it could get better on it own. That is what we will hope and pray for. If anything theselast few years has shown us it’s thst the power of prayer and positivity can lead to miraculous outcomes. I thank god every day for the miracle we’ve been given. ❤️ It’s been a long and exhausting week and I’ve working more hours than ever, but I’m so excited by everything we are building with @socialfly, @entreprenistas and our new product launches. I’ve been getting lots of DMs about our @hellodigicards for students and teachers and I promise I’ll share more info next week as they are almost ready for pre order!! ✔️ I can’t wait for Mollie’s music class tomorrow morning with our neighbors and then a chance to finally hang out with a few friends this weekend. What is delayed cord clamping? It’s the prolongation of time between the delivery of a baby and the clamping of the umbilical cord (APA). The WHO recommends delaying cord clamping for all births. Immediate cord clamping should only be used for special conditions. * Benefits for baby: - Allows for extra blood transfer from the placenta to baby, resulting in increased blood volume. - Increased iron storage, which decreases risk of anemia and is vital to baby’s healthy brain development - Increased amount of stem cells, which helps with your baby’s growth and helps with their immune system Research continues to grow in this area and more benefits are being found especially for premature babies. I have been asked many times how it has been to be a doula in current times. Sometimes my answer is politically correct - it is being asked as a courtesy so I don’t dive too deep. But I was talking to a prospective client today and it was one of those conversations that felt natural and comfortable. Safe and like she genuinely wanted to know. So I answered from a very raw and open place. It was SO hard the first few months. I felt a deep depression and an anxiety that was nearly debilitating. If feels strange to call this ‘work’ because I am so passionate about every aspect of it that it feels more like a calling. A calling that I feel so incredibly blessed to have listened to and worked for. When things shut down so abruptly and intensely, it felt as if the ground had been swiped out from under me. I was terrified that my dreams were no longer. But more importantly, and more intensely, I was absolutely and so completely devastated for birthing families around the world. Being a sensitive empath has its pros and cons and believe me when I say, I felt this SO hard. It almost hurt to breathe. With time, community, a rocking therapist, a change of weather and some serious breath work, things slowly started feeling better. (Most) birthing locations began opening their doors a bit more and welcoming doulas back. So today, I feel good. But to be honest, I am still a bit guarded about what the future may bring. What I have learned from this: - Breathe. Always breathe. - There are other ways to provide support. It may not look like what we want, but that is part of life, right? - More than EVER, birthing families need doula love (support). - The perspective of what a doula is and how beneficial we are is shifting. - Parenthood is already isolating. Combined with quarantine our society is at risk for severe postpartum depression / anxiety. So many doulas (including myself) will offer virtual doula support. MEU RELATO DE PARTO! ✨💙 Sábado dia 29/08 já com 40 semanas e 5 dias, eu estava bastante disposta e desejando que o meu encontro com o de José não estivesse mais tão longe. De manhã cedo resolvi ir para a bola de pilates praticar alguns exercícios específicos que ajudassem tanto a estimular José, como também para aliviar os desconfortos na coluna. A tarde resolvi preparar um cházinho e a noite queria dançar, chamei meu amor @mano_walter colocamos algumas músicas dele pra tocar e dançamos bastante! 😂 A dança no sábado à noite foi tão boa que na madrugada de domingo as contrações leves começaram, conversei com minha obstetra @anasofiacalheiros e ela achou melhor me avaliar em casa para saber como eu estava, porque o encontro que eu mais queria que chegasse, estava muito perto de acontecer! No domingo monitoramos eu e José até o início da tarde, fizemos exercícios com a minha fisioterapeuta @damypilates para ajudar, usamos a bola, fizemos agachamento, me movimentei bastante. Eu estava apenas com 2cm de dilatação, as contrações eram ritmadas mas com pouca dor, resolvemos que eu iria descansar para o que viria e foi o que eu fiz, tomei um café a tarde, comi bem e lá por 17h as contrações começaram a vir com bastante dor, liguei para minha médica e ela e minha equipe resolveram voltar lá pra casa para continuar a me acompanhar. As horas foram passando e as contrações cada vez mais ritmadas e doloridas, estava sim acontecendo! Um misto de sensações começou a passar pela minha cabeça, felicidade, alegria, medo e insegurança, eu estava tentando manter a calma e sempre respirar fundo. Mas as dores só aumentavam e começaram a vir com mais frequência, fiquei mais de horas na banheira com água quente correndo para tentar aliviar, era o jeito mais fácil de eu sentir menos dor. Ficar em pé era quase impossível pra mim, as contrações já estavam 4 a cada 10min e varias vezes eu chorei de dor. ✨ CONTINUA NOS COMENTÁRIOS✨ - @deborarsilvaa on Instagram

How can a support partner help mom during labor? Support people play a key role in mom’s confidence and wellbeing. Here are a few things you can do to make labor easier: 1. Take childbirth education classes. This will help you understand the process and what is happening to mom’s body. 2. Be mom’s advocate. Discuss the birth plan in advanced. Talk to your partner beforehand to learn how she feels about the different procedures (epidural, episiotomy, birth interventions, etc.) and what kind of support they want. 3. Show your support. Birth can be frightening. You are the best person to help mom regain confidence and get her back on track during her process. You know her better than anyone. Let her know she is doing a great job. 4. Make the occasion special. This is a unique experience in a woman’s life. A day she will remember for the rest of her time. Spoil her, show her your love, bring her flowers, find a special way to make this special day even better. 5. Don’t complain. Mom is going through a lot, so the last thing she wants to hear is complaints. Your sore back or boredom are not the priority at this stage. Be positive! Baseada sobre o que conversamos ao longo da gestação, a doula te mantém consciente de todas as suas escolhas feitas até aquele momento. Isso é tão fundamental! Além de te acalmar, também te orienta para que em todo o trabalho de parto você se sinta o mais confortável possível.
