Twice last week I was asked for my measurements by modeling clients. It felt really weird giving strangers these numbers, knowing that some sort of calculation was happening that would determine my value to them. My entire modeling career has been riddled with sentiments around my “thick thighs” or “wow, so muscular” - and it was always delivered with a tone of disappointment. Former agents showed me pictures of extremely lean girls that I should aspire to look like, stylists expressed their frustrations as they cut garments to pin me in to. Models 50 lbs lighter than me were celebrated for their “perfect bodies” while their bones caught the light and they consumed nothing but cigarettes and coffee. Growing up in this working environment was nothing less than really fucking confusing. In my hearts heart I saw a different girl in the mirror. I saw an athlete that struggled to excel in her sport because of her awkward tallness, inherently lean body and loose joints. When I stood in my power and truth I did what I needed to do to achieve my greatest dreams - I ate as much as I could. I focused on being strong, powerful and unbreakable; and I felt good - valuable and worthy. But the industry would tell me a different story about my value. It wasn’t just the constant commentary and affirmation of the skinny obsessed media. It was the monetary allotment. At my leanest I could earn more on a single photoshoot than any brand was willing to pay me for an annual ski contract. And this was really confusing as a young girl. So, I’m here to invite you in shifting this paradigm, for ourselves and for the next generation. Let’s start with knowing that our value is not measured in our dress size, but in the way you treat others, the kindness that you show strangers and the love you express to yourself. Let’s support our sisters in know their true beauty and let’s demand that brands highlight women of all shapes, size and color. I hope you will join me in that commitment because I know you’ve felt the pressures too. Please share your story in the comments below. Why is pizza so amazing? 😍🍕 ©️©️©️Everything you read about diets is conflicting, confusing and complicated (the 3Cs). 🤯It can seem overwhelming, but I promise you it’s not as difficult as it seems. If I can only teach you one thing - it’s this: 🥳THERE ARE NO RULES TO EATING HEALTHY. THE DEFINITION OF HEALTHY IS UNIQUE TO YOU. 👊🏼 🚘Don’t try to go down someone else’s path. Create your own. Trying to get the same results as someone else is only going to discourage you because we all have different needs, desires and obstacles. 💚I love carbs. Going keto would render me down to a terrible 2s two year old throwing constant tantrums for not getting what they want. And no one wants to see a trantrum-y Katie B (trust me). But. Some people swear by it - and that’s ok. Nobody is right. Nobody is wrong. 🍭Some people are also extremely against sugar. Being a type 1 diabetic I have to monitor my sugar, but it doesn’t mean I can’t have it. So I do. Because. 🌵🧡Desert Therapy🧡🌵 ____ My therapist told me I need to go to the desert.🧡 ____ For years I’ve experienced tremendous healing while immersing myself in a sun baked sandstone landscape. 🏜 _____ Quarantine this spring put a *seemingly* vast space between me and my geographical spirit guide. 🏜 Like sandstone, I began to crumble, and confined essentially to one place I was forced to stare at the ruble. _____ The seismic events pushed me to seek a professional therapist for the first time in my life. Do I know where to start? No. Not really. My first appointment with the consultant today made me feel totally & utterly judged. I went wanting to be reassured, made to feel like I was in safe hands. Instead I came away sad. Low. Feeling completely judged. The good news is that I saw our baby. And that we now have a head down. At 28 Weeks we had a Breech position, & while normal wasn’t ideal. So that was the good news. The other was an odd conversation. Namely about #femalesterilization & #csections I have never had a section. I don’t plan on having one. All my babies thankfully have been natural vaginal births. Not easy but natural. Why would a section be mention? Why would sterilisation be mentioned? I asked if he would ask someone half my age with half the number of children I had the same question. As your consultant it is my job to give you this information. #onrepeat apparently. So I came away from said appointment never wanting to return. Upset. Cross. Feeling completely judged. @nhsengland our baby was planned. Wanted. We want a big family. Why can’t that be accepted without question? To say I am disappointed is an understatement. To say I’d like to leave civilisation & live in a forest would be a dream come true. To be who we are. September 1, 2009 // 11 years ago! @laurenpaul8 + I, alongside our brave mommas @letterbliss + @debrakparsekian + incredible friend/cousin/cinematographer @misterhamilton, hit the road on an almost 2 month road trip across America to shoot Finding Kind, @kindcampaign’s life-changing + award-winning documentary that still lives at the heart of our programming. Forever + always, I will love + cherish September 1st. Some yrs it just might take me a minute to realize it’s Sept (this is one of those years)! That year, leading up to this day I was anxiously anticipating the seconds + minutes leading up to our departure, wondering if we were going to get everything done in time, armed w/ countless excel documents + school contacts across the country, filled w/ so much hope + curiosity for what we would discover + really just so much passion + desire to create change + start a conversation. And now here we are 11 years later, still at it. We have witnessed SO MUCH CHANGE. The conversations surrounding bullying, female relationships, youth empowerment + social justice have been ignited, shifted + changed in exponentially immeasurable ways since we first started talking about Kind Campaign in 2008. There’s a moment from that first road trip that I’ll never forget (omg there’s so many!), where we had a minute of free time + started watching back the Truth Booth footage + both just sat there crying hearing story after story from these precious girls about their experiences w/ female bullying. I vividly remember us looking at each other + saying at the same time (our brains have done that in a scary + beautiful way since the beginning): “we won’t stop until this changes”. I am so thankful for all of the change that we have witnessed. I am so thankful that we are able to do what we do. I am so thankful for all of the hope that we have after each assembly because of all the inspiring girls that we meet. I am so thankful that we both jumped in head first + took a leap of faith + followed our passion. I am so thankful for all of the people (especially our families!) that supported + still support us.
