If youre exhausted, youre not alone. In fact, its suggested that more than 50% of people with IBD suffer from poor sleep quality regardless of disease activity (1). ⠀ ⠀ A recent research study indicated that at least 50% of IBD patients experience fatigue. Inflammation, anemia, nutrient deficiencies, medications, and alterations in the gut microbiome have all been suggested to lead to fatigue in patients with crohns or colitis (1).⠀ ⠀ One of the many factors that can impact energy levels is poor sleep quality which is why I have my clients do research-based sleep and fatigue assessments at the beginning and end of our program so that we can quantify their improvements in energy. ⠀ ⠀ Some tips that have helped my clients improve their sleep quality include finding trigger foods to reduce pain/urgent/frequent trips to the bathroom, sticking to consistent sleep/wake schedules even on the weekends, and adding a relaxing bedtime ritual before bed. ⠀ ⠀ My most recent client who completed my program had an 85% improvement in her sleep quality score and a 44% improvement in her fatigue score and this occurred in three months. I scroll through old photos of my weaves to get inspiration and I came across this one and just sighed. It’s one of my all time favorites. I’ve never done another weaving like it. Ironically, it was done somewhat hastily and I thought it was going to look ugly and thrown together. Instead, it became a cherished piece. I think it lives somewhat locally. Bananas are one of the most wasted foods in supermarkets, today. And of course outside the store in our homes, we waste a gigantic number as well. Ususally due to the quick ripening properties of bananas in general. There are weeks were I buy bananas and they are all gone by Wednesday and other weeks where I end up with half a bunch that is starting to turn brown. If I could predict my families appetites for bananas, Id be one happy person. First and foremost, its imortant to slow down the ripening of bananas so that they last longer. Never store bananas in a container or in a bag, that will speed things up even more. Instead, leave them on an open counter or hang them on a banana hook. I also like to wrap a little bit of wax around the stems to slow down the ripening process. Of course, ending up with some overly ripe bananas will happen. Stick them in the freezer for later and incorporate them into some delicious dishes rather than tossing them out. Just because they are a little brown doesnt mean theyre inedible. Size inclusivity is one of the main areas where slow fashion is lacking. An entire section of people are left out of the movement because of their body size. This leads to body negativity, as plus-size people start seeing themselves as unimportant due to their exclusion from the conversation. Today marks not only the change of seasons, but a change to the studio as we all know it. This year has shown so many of us that our ways of existing and operating were unsustainable. So as a studio we are moving, adjusting, and adapting to a different world then the one we had envisioned. Many of these changes were set to take place on March 15th, but instead we had to shut our doors, doors which remained closed until very recently. Headaches in pregnancy are really common. Hormonal changes usually mean they may happen quite a bit in the first few months but tend to get better by the time youre around 6 months pregnant. Keeping your self hydrated, ensuring you get enough sleep and avoid stress can help with reducing headaches. Sometimes headaches after 20 weeks of pregnancy can be a sign of a condition called pre-eclampsia which can cause complications if its not monitored and treated. If you have any of the following with your headache, contact your Dr/Midwife/hospital straight away: A sudden severe headache or one that is progressively getting worse. Chest pain or pain below the ribs on the right Visual disturbances/flashing lights/seeing spots Vomiting Sudden severe swelling to your face, hands, legs/feet The vast majority of headaches in pregnancy are absolutely harmless but its always worthwhile making a note of what is not typical and contact your care provider for further advise. Have you ever heard of the J curve? I recently learned about this on Pinterest as I was doing research. Basically it’s an initial loss followed by an exponential growth 📈 If you want to do some research on this and how it relates to economics I highly recommend doing research, but why I wanted to share it today is sometimes this is what our businesses look like. When you first get started, you invest a ton of money time and resources and then you launch and you are just losing money and having no success as a change has occurred. But then things shift and it can start to grow (but also spend more to keep growing so make sure to watch out for that too!). But many quit while in the bottom. The most successful entrepreneurs I know in town are successful not because they are better but because they weathered storms and didn’t give up. If you are going through a dip right now, please keep going, start pouring water out of the ship to stay afloat. If marketing is your biggest struggle, that’s the reason I launched @twincitiescollectiveacademy to help those who want to use social media to bring greater awareness & sales to their business. But it is not enough for me to sit in fear we all must stand up and use our voice to vote, sign the petition for George Floyd, call the representatives in Minnesota to have charges put against the police officers...but also have grace and know that yes there is a systemic problem happening within the police force but we must also look at why these officers are in such internal pain that they feel it is their right to take another life. . We must heal as a collective and protest in peace by taking action not by causing more division and violence . As a mama of children of color I ask you as a white person to stop saying that we are all the same or that you are color blind! This is offensive to the BIPOC community because you have now not only striped POC of their right to demand change for their own race by categorizing POC into the white race but you have also just striped the human race of what makes us so profoundly beautiful and that is our diversity . We are all the same as in we all are human and deserve the same rights and racial equality but let’s not skirt this under the rug by saying we are all the same when it comes to the way society view POC . Wait, what? You had two home waterbirths?⠀ ⠀ This is a common response when I talk to moms about their birth experience and they ask about mine. I find myself quickly dismissing what mine looked like to hold space for them to process theirs. But they often get curious and want to know more.⠀ ⠀ Well...my pregnancies and births were smooth and beautiful, but my first postpartum experience almost broke me. I then say, to again shut down the good parts and be back in a place of empathy and understanding with them. ⠀ ⠀ Because in our society I find its hard to talk about both extremes. Those who had breathtakingly good and earth-shattering experiences. Mamas dont want to feel like theyre bragging if it was an enjoyable experience and some sit in silence because of shame, trauma, confusion, or a host of factors.⠀ ⠀ This isnt helpful. ⠀ ⠀ Mamas who need support to process what happened arent helped.⠀ ⠀ Mamas who need inspiration that birth can be beautiful, breathtaking, or even orgasmic have to dig to find those stories.⠀ ⠀ So today, in honor of my sons 6th birthday and my birthing DAY, Im going to lift the veil and say that Yes! Im a mama who had two beautiful birth experiences and I will happily share that side of the story to anyone who is seeking uplifting stories. How do you use up your produce skins? Most of them can easily be eaten and with others, there are still many ways to get more out of them! I love making apple cider vinegar (recipe in my book!) with apple peels and love making homemade fertilzer with banana peels. Making homemade all-purpose cleaner with leftover citrus peels is also a great way to use up every part of the lemon or orange. Reducing food waste in the home starts when we change our perspective of our food. Getting more out of it allows us to learn new skills, become a little more resourceful and save money! Just like my great-grandparents, they would never waste a scrap. I really learned so much from them as they would find ways to eat or use everything that came from their gardens. Real talk: I’ve been super quiet on here as I have been trying to mentally get myself in the right headspace with this school year starting tomorrow. 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 We all come in different shapes, curves and sizes and this is the reasoning behind why prescribed exercise is so intricate and individual. Our spinal shape plays a large part in exercise prescription and gives key indicators for movements that will be suitable, and others not so much. Here are a few of my favourite tips for movement for these postures. ▫️Remember to Breath properly. Utilise a diaphragmic breath to take advantage of available lung capacity, build good circulation, stomach tone, and postural awareness. ▫️Neutral Spine is different for everybody. It’s about finding the best ‘pain free’ most comfortable position for the body to move functionally. The are many ways to correctly find this on each individual body. ▫️Always think length. LINK IN BIO: Back in 1999 I started a solo recording project called HIGHLANDS. I made a few 5-10 minute tapes that came with short zines called “5 Minutes Of Your Time”, and gave them away to anyone who would take one. In the early 2000’s, there were a few live line ups for those songs-including @bood138 @remoteoutposts @scam_punks and a few others at different times. I ended up playing in other bands in the 2000’s and 2010’s and never returned to HIGHLANDS until recently. Daniel Westcott and I have kept in touch and have been in other bands together over the years. (Google QUEERWULF😉) Quarantine hit and I started talking to Daniel everyday and trading home solo projects. I asked him to send me blank drum beats...to write a song on drums, the way I used to do HIGHLANDS. He started sending me all kinds of stuff from his garage and we came up with these new jams. It should be noted that, nowadays, this is more common in rural and conservative areas and not in bigger cities. ‼️ Interestingly, what this practice shows is that at least during the first couple of years there are more fluid ideas about gender compared to the West, where babies often wear pink or blue depending on their sex. In Afghanistan, switching one’s gender during the early childhood is not very controversial. ‼️ The real question is: when will the day come when Afghan girls have the same amount of freedom and receive the same respect as boys and men? And is this so called freedom the girls have being a bacha posh really freedom? Isn’t this just another form of oppression? This is the balancing act I work on perfecting everyday. I own a business and want to be profitable but I also want to be a supporting leader to my team. Sometimes these two go together and sometimes they seem to work against each other. How do you know when you are finished having babies? For me, I have always wanted two. I never want to be outnumbered by children. I often hear that people simply can’t imagine not having another baby and I definitely don’t relate to that. For some, parting with baby items is a painful process.   Personally, I couldn’t get that stuff out of here quick enough. I loved my babies and the endless possibilities that lie ahead. But I never found them particularly interesting.    Now, as my youngest and last daughter approaches three, I realise with a gut-wrenching sadness, I will never have another toddler. And for me, that is something worth grieving.   While adults will stew on a wrongdoing for days, a toddler can go from absolute despair to unbridled happiness in mere seconds. When they are happy, they insist that everyone around them be happy too. And they are so endearing that their happiness is infectious. A joyful toddler can emit a tidal wave of happiness through a group of strangers. The way they love is so fierce that is overwhelms them. Their perseverance is admirable. They are delightfully unpredictable and contrary. I’ve never been a fan of the “terrible twos” label, largely because I find it inaccurate.  Toddlers are perfectly emotional, inquisitive, hilarious, loving and creative and the only thing terrible about it, is that this magical age only lasts for such a short amount of time. 💫 - @common_wild on Instagram
