Todays talk: why cats are obligate carnivores 😸 What is an obligate carnivore? An obligate carnivore is an animal that cannot obtain all the nutrients that they need from the plant kingdom & bacteria (1). But... your domestic feline is more than this, they are considered hypercarnivores, meaning they ONLY feed on animal tissue (2). 🧛♂️ Their nails are sharp, their tongues are barbed with teeth shaped for slicing & tearing, & their jaws only move up & down, they dont grind side-to-side (2, 4). Evolution has kept their digestive tract short, preventing the need for stomach fermentation; & while they do posses digestive enzymes to break down animal tissue into amino acids, they lack the enzyme necessary to split carotene (plants) into vitamin A, making it essential that they consume the liver of their prey (1). All characteristics of a meat only diet... 🦁 Cats have an extremely high protein requirement - if theyre not getting enough, theyll take it from their own muscles (3), the same as calcium. Their bodies cannot create certain amino acids, instead they must consume them, like arginine & taurine (3). Unlike humans, cats saliva doesnt contain amylase, so their mouths are not able to break down starches like those found in wet or dry foods (4). 🍲 Lastly, cats must eat FRESH meat. Because their digestive system is short & not meant to rid their food of toxic byproducts, they cannot handle old or spoiled meat; it has to smell & taste a certain way, which accounts for a lot of their pickiness (5). 🍖 All cats, including your little house panther require a flesh based diet with organs & bones - evolution has made it so their bodies are not equipped for plants or spoiled foods. Alguns animais apresentam pouca abertura da cavidade oral, focinho comprido e com isso a visualização da glote torna-se mais desafiadora. . O que não pode acontecer é deixarmos de tentar e fazer o nosso melhor para que a intubação seja efetivada! . A intubação orotraqueal durante uma anestesia não serve apenas para que ocorra a anestesia inalatória. Ela é um modo seguro de mantermos patentes as vias aéreas dos nossos pacientes, evitando colapsos, aspirações (cuff inflado!), além de facilitar a oxigenação e a ventilação assistida caso seja necessário. . A posição esternal acaba sendo a mais comum nas rotinas, mas não é a única. Podemos intubar com o animal em decúbito lateral, e o modo mais fácil de intubar sem auíxilio de outra pessoa, é no decúbito dorsal (como na primeira foto!). . Então a dica de hoje é: treinem a intubação em outras posições, saiam da zona de conforto e treinem também os colegas que trabalham com você! Uma intubação realizada de modo correto e no tempo certo, pode salvar vida! . O treinamento permite que a gente vá aperfeiçoando a técnica e nos traz mais segurança em situações desafiadoras. . . Il 𝘊𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘴 Oggi vi presentiamo il canide endemico della Sardegna, il 𝘊𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘴, che popolò l’isola presumibilmente dal Pleistocene medio all’Olocene. Nella Sardegna centro-orientale sono stati rinvenuti resti scheletrici del canide presso la cava del Monte Tuttavista (Orosei-Galtellì) e nella Grotta Corbeddu (Oliena). Il 𝘊𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘴 presenta un muso stretto e lungo e ciò ha portato gli studiosi ad ipotizzare che si nutrisse in particolare dell’ocotonide 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘶𝘴, rinvenuto frequentemente in associazione ai resti di canide in molti giacimenti fossiliferi della Sardegna. La morfologia del cranio di 𝘊𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 è paragonabile, tra i canidi attuali, al 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴, una specie di sciacallo che abita gli altipiani etiopici e che si è adattato ad una dieta di piccoli roditori. Nonostante presenti una discreta documentazione fossile, non è ancora chiaro da quale canide, presente nelle aree continentali durante il Pleistocene, sia derivato. Studi recenti hanno evidenziato che il 𝘊𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 mostra analogie con il gruppo degli sciacalli e del coyote, anche se non è da escludere un legame con gli antenati del licaone, un canide attualmente diffuso solamente nell’Africa sub-sahariana. Texas Gold Millipede - - Scientific Name: Orthoporus ornatus . Taxonomy: Animalia -- Arthropoda -- Myriapoda -- Diplopoda -- Spirostreptida -- Spirostreptidae -- Orthoporus -- ornatus . Status: least concerned . Features: This species has a gold colored body (hence the name) with dark brown segment lines. Typically has a dark brown head. Has been recorded up to 6 (15.24 cm) but on average is about 4 (10.16 cm) . Distribution: Can be found in the wild in U.S. states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas as well as the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. . In captivity: This species prefers more arid conditions than that of previous Florida species. In the wild, they prefer more sunshine than many species. Note, desert does not equal 100% sand. Still keep them in a substrate of mostly organic soil. Also to note, dont be worried if your millipedes disappear for the winter months; its completely normal and they should reappear in the spring! . . Footnotes: N/A . 🐛Personal Notes🐛 Sorry for skipping around with species! The reason Im covering the Golds now is because I just got several of my own! They are absolutely wonderful and my biggest species to date. They do spray their toxins much more often than my other species, but of course it isnt dangerous. In my tank, I experimented mixing my usual substrate with childrens play sand (so its non-toxic) to try and aerate the soil better. So far all is going well and they seem to enjoy digging into the sand. Also, as the holidays are here Ill probably be posting less for the next couple of weeks.
