Todays talk: raised bowls for barfers 🤮 Does your cat still throw up despite everything else youve tried? If you KNOW its not food intolerance, scarf & barf, or something similar, it could be their anatomy. 🐈 Being four-legged creatures, a cats esophagus is horizontal & flat rather than vertical; because of this, when crouched, food may be hitting their esophageal sphincter (which separates the throat & stomach), resulting in regurgitation shortly or immediately after eating (1). What can YOU do to help❓ Raised feeding bowls may remedy this! Instead of being in a squat position with a squished stomach, raised bowls allow for a more comfortable feeding posture. They may help with bloating if your cat sucks in a lot of air while eating as well (2). Make sure the feeder is in a neutral position, no higher than knee or chest height - they shouldnt have to reach upward or downward to access food (2). You also want the bowl to be shallow enough that their whiskers wont have to bend while eating. 🐱 A raised bowl can benefit any cat but for older ones, it may become necessary. This is because sometimes the stress in muscles, bones or joints [due to crouching] does not allow them to eat very much, which means they are not getting all the nutrients they need to be healthy (3). By lifting the bowl to a comfortable height, a cat can relax its body while eating, letting gravity do its job & facilitating the foods movement from mouth to esophagus to stomach. 😋 So, if youve tried or ruled everything else out, a raised bowl that caters to your cats anatomy may just do the trick! ⚠️ This is merely a suggestion, not to replace medical advice. If your cat is throwing up more often than youre comfortable with, please, take them to a vet.
