Our hearts are heavy to hear that Shetler Studios, a touchstone in the artistic community, will be closing after 30 years. The 12th floor holds a special place in our Shrill history, as we held our very first meeting there. We created our mission statement and chose our name in their studios. Over the last 3 years, we looked to Shetler for their affordable not-for-profit rates to rehearse (from our first production of “Lysistrata” to our most recent “Trifles”), audition, plan and dream up, and workshop new theatre. It was a cool day, the sun was hiding behind clouds all day. The kid was Playing with toys and reading. Sergej greeted the man and discussed the type of session to get. He looked at me said “half hour ? Hour?” I answered back prolly a hour. Ee split the session and payed him in euro. We entered the room the floor was black with white lines like a zebra. The walls had foam and there was a small table. Roughly the same size as my 404. While in Berlin visiting Germany i brought a Roland sp 404sx, which is a sampler. I had only owned the 404 for a few months so wasn’t as familiar with it as i am now. I loaded it with bird chirping samples , a couple drums and a few keys. While we played for that hour after a short ten minute set up, we both explored the new atmosphere our layers were creating. Das Gartenkunst-Projekt SCHLEUSE / LABOR AUSGELAGERT geht in die vorletzte Runde! Am kommenden Sonntag, den 6. September, präsentiert mit Anita Esfandiari @manzar_v bereits die achte junge Künstlerin ein Kunstwerk im Rahmen des Projekts. Die an der Frankfurter Städelschule studierende Künstlerin zeigt von 10 bis 18 Uhr ihre Arbeit »playhouse« im Garten der Opelvillen und steht vor Ort für Fragen der Besucher bereit. Anita Esfandiari beschreibt ihr Projekt wie folgt: »Es gibt eine winzige Straße zwischen dem Fluss und dem Boden. Ruhig, lang, mürrisch, aber eintönig. Es gibt ein Schild mit der Aufschrift ›Komm näher‹. Die Straße verläuft kilometerweit, begleitet vom Fluss und dem Boden. Ein anderes Schild sagt ›Ermok nähm‹ mit einer violetten Linie, aber der Fluss geht am Weg vorbei und der Weg geht am Boden vorbei. Oh! Es gibt ein Haus, das früher ein Spielplatz war. POWERSTATION 009 IS HERE 🖤 Kris Baha returns to his imprint since ‘Mind Your Head’ in 2016 with 4 mutant industrial cuts ready for a dancefloor of 1. ‘Behave’ begins with a hypnotic sequence guiding the listener through the piece as sonic sirens screech from the cavernous dystopian wastelands of 2020. ‘Starts to Fall’ , which was finished in January before the epidemic is a soundtrack of what was to come. A could be dancefloor anthem now lost to the ‘could of been’s’ of time. Baha’s signature mechanical grooves start the track off with KB’s androgynous autotune vocal singing ‘Starts To Fall’, punching into a metallic punk wave inspired bassline setting the tone before submerging into the anthemic hook, a call to a brighter future. On the B side, ‘Struck’ is the more brighter track of the release. High pitched melodic stab hooks shimmer above the corroded lowlands as 90’s industrial inspired drum grooves inject themselves into the already mutating bass line. Lastly, ‘Isolation’ is a slower BPM EBM cut evidently bleak and cold as forced Isolation and its negative side effects take their toll. The future is... Jamea Richmond-Edwards “Archetype of a 5 Star,” 2018 (acrylic, spray paint, glitter, ink and cut paper collage on canvas, 60 x 48 inches) Jamea Richmond-Edwards graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Jackson State University in 2004 where she studied painting and drawing. She went on to earn an MFA from Howard University in 2012. She offers a repertoire of portraits of women drawn using ink, graphite and mixed media collage. Richmond-Edward’s work has garnered the attention of various art critics including in the Washington Post and the Huffington Posts Black Artists: 30 Contemporary Art Makers Under 40 You Should Know. Richmond-Edwards has exhibited her artwork nationally and internationally including the Delaware Art Museum, California African American Museum, Charles Wright Museum in Detroit, MI, and Galerie Myrtis in Baltimore, Maryland. Her works are in the permanent collection of private collectors across the country including the Embassy of the United States in Dakar, Senegal. Richmond-Edwards grew up observing the Black community’s fashion style in Detroit’s inner-city during the late 1980s and early ’90s. Popular and idolized were Coogi sweaters, red gators, and designer bags from Gucci and Louis Vuitton. She understood the correlation of the fashion industry around the Black female experience and their complex relationship with luxury clothing. The artifice of dressing became the driving narrative of her work and her form of Black aesthetic and expression. She was particularly interested in how her work confronted social disparities and the inequitable practices and tone-deaf decisions continually made by the fashion house of H&M, Adidas, Gucci, and Prada. So heres a slight digression from my other ongoing projects (so many...), but its a short one. My wife and I got new electric toothbrushes yesterday, and they came in these oblong test-tube like plastic containers with a screw cap at the end. Hmmmmmmmm. Much like a glass display case, but long and skinny. My first thought to make some kind of miniature landscape, like an impossibly skinny cliff or butte or something. Then I measured the opening....barely 21mm. My Death Star tiles are 20mm.....Hmmmmmm. Therefore, allow me to present -- Death Star In a Bottle! This was a super fast build - maybe two hours, tops. Gotta put a few more greebles on the underside, then paint it up. Those are fighters from Fantasy Flights Star Wars Armada game. Most of the honest and liberating work I do is in the unlearning. Seeing the sneaky ways I try to believe I’m too much and not enough or that I’m undeserving of what I have or underserved of what I need. ⠀ It takes continuous work to unlearn things you didn’t know you were taught. Sometimes it feels like a fight to accept it all. ⠀ You know when I started loving my self? When I decided to. And you know what happened? I truly started loving myself. And then I felt free enough to love everything else in my life more. I started standing up for myself and my health and my wholeness, naturally. I look around now and feel love and acceptance from everyone who has a seat at my table. ⠀ We live in a reality where taking care of ourselves and each other is radical. Rest is revolutionary. Believing we have and are enough is rebellious. ⠀ like all of the systems that are falling right now, here is another that must. Just as the others, we continue to learn that the structures that teach us how to be are working exactly as designed. Until we choose to stop buying in. ⠀ What if we didn’t support the systems that tell us we are wrong, can’t trust ourselves, have to worry, be alone, or get sick. Let the walls fall: you aren’t how much or how little or not enough or too much. What you’re going through isn’t tmi for those wanting to know more. You are not cemented to any experience of reality forever, whether good, bad, pretty, ugly or otherwise. Everything is changing, always, all the time. Fight against the current of status quo. Question everything. ⠀ I hope you have and I hope you do. Then we can talk about how grateful we were to have done it. It’s worth it. You’re worth it. The power we all gain is worth it. ⠀ I have two big events coming up this season. The Pisces Full Moon Retreat is for us and our rest and our wholeness. September 1-3 The Mars Retrograde Journey is for us to find our purpose and our power, together. September 9-November 15. ⠀ Really, they go together and we must have both. “When nothing goes right, go left” I read this quote on a motel sign while on a solo road trip to Colorado recently. It has really stuck with me. When life feels like it’s falling apart, sometimes you just have to go in a different direction. It even is true with this piece. I have created so many paintings in the last 2 weeks. Many have elements that I like, but as a whole, they they just weren’t working for me. After having the idea to put them all together, it fought me too. I reworked, took apart and reframed this piece about 5 times today. The final product makes me happy though. We wanted to emulate that sharp contrast in a PC, and that was how Geode was born. A matte, stony looking paint finish on the entire chassis sets the stage for deep purple lighting and a striking, handpainted crystal gash across the front. Mineral details can be found throughout the PC such as in gorgeous crystalline RAM sticks and real crystals stacked carefully under the graphics card.
