My motion regarding housing passed unanimously today. As many are aware, the City and our local housing and social agency partners have been ongoing advocates and supporters to end homelessness with a primary focus on the need for supportive housing as one of the main solutions to this issue. We continue to make the case to both the federal and the provincial governments that we need their support to help make this happen. The City can’t do it alone (as much as we want to) — jurisdictionally it isn’t in our mandate, and with only 8 cents of the tax dollar, it just isn’t financially possible for us to do it alone. If we work together, we can end homelessness though and that leads to my motion: looking at the possibility of using any existing spaces that may have become recently available as temporary housing so we can begin to move more people out of the cycle of homelessness and into longer-term supportive housing. Weve already demonstrated that we can do this: an example would be how we recently activated the Coliseum Inn as bridge housing and how were currently converting the old jockey dorm rooms on the old Expo grounds into transitional housing spaces — but we need more of this housing to help end homelessness. Id also stress that this motion isnt just about housing: council understands that we need support services for folks. That is why the motion includes working with the provincial government to accommodate short and medium-term transitional and treatment supportive housing for those currently experiencing homelessness.
