White supremacy isn’t just a thing held by people hiding under sheets and dunce caps but a pervasive system of beliefs that’s deeply embedded in all of us and manifests itself through all layers of society. Policies, institutions, ways of seeing. Ways of understanding. Ways of learning and speaking. Ways of saying nothing. I speak out often on my personal account and when I created this account for my art I thought I’d avoid politics and stick to the things we can all agree on. HERE IS A CLAY BURGER. BEHOLD, AN ICE CREAM CONE. No quarrel there. But truthfully it’s felt odd not to disclose how I feel on these pressing matters of human existence. Politics are only “separate” if you have the privilege to separate yourself from them. In fact it’s a deeply political choice to not be actively political. These clay works are about finding joy and connecting through colour and texture and playfulness. But joy is not a space to occupy while hiding ourselves from injustice.
