It’s been 41 days. Phil is finally reunited with his wife and baby girl. They discharged him and due to COVID the PT facilities aren’t working out at the gyms so he went to his mothers house and the PT and nurses will start therapy tomorrow. They say it will be a very long road. Currently, Phil is not walking or moving his arms. So phase 2 of this nightmare will continue but thank god he will do this phase with his eyes open. Still, the police unleashed tear gas and rubber bullets on the crowd (we thankfully left before the tear gassing started). There was no vandalism, no spray painting, no looting, and no provocative confrontation with the police. And still, The People were denied their fundamental constitutional rights and had military-grade weapons used on them by the very force tasked with ensuring their safety. Yesterday, president Trump had the area outside the White House cleared of a legal, peaceful protest with tear gas and rubber bullets, so he could walk out and have a photo opportunity with a bible, because he was embarrassed he spent the previous night hiding in a bunker. As someone else put it, Trump tear-gassed Americans so he could get a photo in front of a church he doesnt go to, holding a book he never reads, invoking laws he doesn’t understand, to use a military he dodged serving in, against Americans he sees as enemies. Apparently, American states must be left to organise their pandemic responses without gov. assistance, yet protests against racist cops require the intervention of the military. In an hour-long call with governors yesterday that was called “unhinged, the president raged at governors they were “weak”, while the Secretary of Defense advised in chilling terms on the need to ‘dominate the battlespace’. Over the last few days, we have seen hundreds if not thousands of videos of police brutality at protests *about* police brutality. These over-equipped and under-trained forces have roots in slave-catching militias (across the south), and patrols (in cities like Boston and NY) hired to keep ‘order’ in immigrant communities. Cops that murder are shielded by mob-like police unions, often facing no consequences. The cop that killed George Floyd already had 17 complaints against him. ‘Warrior’ training techniques also mean police approach interactions with public prepared to use deadly force, using powerful military hardware. Defunding the police is necessary. Police have also begun targeting reporters, in an attempt to blind the media – literally, in some cases: one journalist has lost the use of an eye to a projectile. One reporter has collected 105 instances of police attacks on media. We need to see united international condemnation. SWIPE, there’s 3 photos Aiight so boom, I’m gonna pick on myself a little bit to make a point and I truly hope my message reaches those who need to see this. Let me start by saying “you don’t know what you don’t know”. In these photos from 2016, 25 year old Tig was a brand new firearms instructor. I did a ton of photo shoots to convey the message that black women can and should carry and learn how to use firearms. The problem with these images is that I’m breaking safety rules (1st and 2nd photo) and I have an improper two handed grip (1st and 3rd photo). My thumbs should be forward (it’s better, just trust me), my fingers should never be on the trigger and I shouldn’t be pointing my firearm at the viewer. I’m also holding two firearms (2nd photo) which is HIGHLY impractical for real life. It doesn’t matter that I know none of these firearms were loaded. “Perception is reality” and if it looks like I’m being unsafe, then I am. To the untrained eye the photos look cool and are attention-catching HOWEVER my responsibility as a firearms professional is to present proper firearm safety and handling techniques. Every day I see cute photos of men and women using firearms as props (not really mad at this). The issue is the unsafe and improper handling of firearms in these photos could confuse those who don’t know better. I don’t want anyone to look at me breaking the safety rules or using a trash grip and think it’s ok. As an instructor, how can I use a photo of me breaking safety rules to advertise firearm safety classes. Crazy right? Anyone who posts photos holding or using firearms has the responsibility to make sure they’re doing so properly. So if you see something wrong, politely and respectfully say something because sometimes people just “don’t know what they don’t know”. On the Azerbaijani side, the remaining inhabitants found themselves without electricity, heating oil, water or food as they awaited the promised safe passage. They then found themselves facing the Armenian armed forces, who were supported by the 366th Soviet Infantry Regiment. During this attack, 613 people were killed, and 487 seriously disabled. Yesterday, for the second night in a row, New Yorkers took to the street to protest in solidarity with people across the country enraged and disgusted over the killing of George Floyd at the hands of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer and decades if not centuries of injustice against Black people at the hands of those meant to keep us safe. Protestors gathered at Barclays Center and a contingency of folks marched across the Brooklyn Bridge after observing a vigil for George Floyd in Foley Square. The tension erupted as night fell, and police sprayed crowds with tear gas and charged into pods they created to break up the larger pack. I This morning, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said that police arrested over 200 individuals. In a somber change of rhetoric, the police, city and the state will be conducting a thorough investigation into last nights events as videos and images surface of police shoving, beating, and antagonizing protestors and retaliatory actions against the police escalated throughout Brooklyn leading to several injuries for all parties present. reading ab the siege on portland by US federal troops and the unlawful detainment of three BLMTO protestors this weekend and thinking ab the glib collective desire that we are all superhuman actors who can somehow see through the forces of narrative and technology. specifically the strategic positioning of canada as a pacifist, progressive, almost effete global actor, and the capitalist mechanism of algorithmically manipulating our human need for more and new. the insistence that “tHat DoEsN’T hApPeN iN CaNADa,” and the ways we are, everyday, subtly coerced into forgetting. thinking ab the G20 protests here in toronto 10 years ago this summer. i will never forget walking home from work down yonge (i lived off beverley st at the time) and seeing officers in full riot gear doing some kind of public intimidation performance in the middle of the road, marching in formation and slapping their shields with batons while pedestrians stood and... gawked? there were no protests happening nearby; at that point, friday aft, protestors were closer to the fenced off convention centre [REMEMBER THAT???!] which was over 2km away. it was apparent to me then, if it hadn’t been before, that in all encounters between civilians and the state it is the police that rouse the spectre of violence. saying black lives matter, indigenous sovereignty now, free palestine, defund the police, and (esp imp for brown ppl) standing against hindu fascism in all forms isn’t the sole responsibility of activists - it is our joyful right as humans to amplify the voices of those who are being violated. in this way our rights are intertwined. if you haven’t explored the shape and sensation of your rights at this moment, how will you feel the loss of them until it’s too late? On June 1, the fourth straight day of demonstrations protesting the death of George Floyd, institutional racism and violence by police, protesters lay down in front of the Portland police station. After a calm start, things grew tense as night fell. Confrontations with police moved around downtown and lasted until nearly 2a.m. Throughout the night there was a push and pull between organizers, who sought to keep the demonstrations peaceful, and people who threw water bottles and other objects at the police.
