Sine Qua Non, Chardonnay, “Mr. K - The Noble Man - Alban Vineyard,” California [375ml] 2006 . Founded in 1994 by Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine. The Krankls began making their own wines in 1994 due to personal interest and with the added benefit of being able, if the wines were good enough, to sell them to the successful Mediterranean-themed Los Angeles restaurant Campanile, which Manfred co-founded and managed. Beginning with several self described project wines made in partnership with John Alban and other vintners, initial production was approximately 100 cases. After several experiments with white varietals, Rhone red varietals and even Pinot noir, the Krankls found their sweet spot in 1994 with a predominantly Syrah-based blend they named Queen of Spades that earned a 95 point rating from Robert Parker. Today, this wine retails at an average price of $5,861 per bottle. Manfred was also a co-founder of La Brea Bakery. Sale of a portion of his ownership position in LaBrea enabled him to focus on wine-making full-time, at which point total production, diversity of releases, and competency with the full spectrum of Rhone (and other) varietals steadily increased. Sourcing fruit from a wide variety of growers from year to year, and increasingly from their own vineyards has caused the winery to never make exactly the same wine twice, about which Krankl has said, People buy Sine Qua Non. They don’t seem to give a toot where it’s from”. . In collaboration with Austrian winemaker Alois Kracher, Manfred and Elaine Krankl have also produced sweet wines under the label Mr. K (after the surnames of the two winemakers). Inspired by @MrKing and his new blog post debating the 1985 vs 1988 vintage of Sassicaia. . Tenuta San Guido, “Sassicaia,” Bolgheri 2005 . In the 1920s the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamt of creating a ‘thoroughbred’ wine and for him, as for all the aristocracy of the time, the ideal was Bordeaux. This is how he described it in a letter to the esteemed wine critic, Luigi Veronelli dated 11 June 1974: “…the origins of my experiment date back to the years between 1921 and 1925 when, as a student in Pisa and often a guest of the Salviati Dukes in Migliarino, I drank a wine produced from one of their vineyards…which had the same unmistakable “bouquet” as an aged Bordeaux….” . In the 1940s, having settled with his wife Clarice on the Tenuta San Guido on the Tyrrhenian coast, he experimented with several French grape varieties (whose cuttings he had recovered from the estate of the Dukes Salviati in Migliarino) and concluded that the Cabernet had the bouquet I was looking for. . A wine made mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon was a fundamental change to the Tuscan and Piedmont tradition of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, respectively. TANKS FINALLY ARRIVED! Many months after ordering, the large tanks for the rosato finally arrived, just in time for the main part of the rosato harvest! The unloading and positioning took time in order not to damage the vessels which was to be avoided at all cost as these tanks are tailor made with specific dimensions for our cellar as well as our way of winemaking for the Susucaru Rosato. _______________ VASCHE FINALMENTE ARRIVATE! Robert 2020 Royal St. Robert Is showing beautifully. Without question the cluster quality and overall vine health is as good as we have seen since beginning RAEN. The years dedicated to permaculture and biodynamic farming principles are now just starting to show 🙌. The first couple years under our guidance were challenging as the soil microbiome began to regenerate along with the vine roots and surrounding microflora. Now the canopy, fruit zone and soils beneath have found harmony making the journey here so worth while. It comes during a difficult year for all of us but the future is bright. Harvest is days away for our Royal St Robert block. Can’t wait to get these babies into the cellar for there sacred journey into wine. 🙏🍷 - @raenwinery on Instagram
