So much terrible shit has happened and yet there is also goodness. I finally started a creative agency called Hooligan Creatives, which is a sect of @hooliganmagazine, with one of my best friends @j__sath. Same missions and values as Hooligan, we’re just providing branding & design services for artists, creatives, healers & movement-builders. We’ve expanded the Hooligan team and we have so much exciting news on the horizon. I got new glasses after 3 months of nonstop migraines because a prescription update was long overdue. My friend cut my hair in their backyard (with masks on). I started growing a garden and I’ve already harvested banana peppers and basil. It is the first time in my life where I trust my friends wholly and fully. I am prioritizing my wellness as much as I can so I can continue showing up for those who remain on the frontlines of a never ending fight against white supremacy. 2019 was really an incredible year for me. My year was full of incredible experiences, wonderful places, and amazing humans. I think this might have been the best year of my life so far. Its interesting tho, I think it was my best year yet but it wasn’t my happiest. I still dont really understand how that works but I feel like I really grew a lot as a person this year, that thats a super cool feeling. One of the biggest feelings I have for this year is Gratitude. Im so grateful for my healthy mind and my healthy body. Im grateful for all the amazing, beautiful humans that have influenced my life life in a positive way. Im grateful for all the lessons I get to learn constantly. Im grateful to be fortunate enough to be able to create the type of life I want for myself. Continuing on with this date in history - 1620. After coming to anchor in Provincetown harbor, a party of armed men under the command of Captain Myles Standish was sent out to explore the area and find a location suitable for settlement. . While they were gone, Susanna White gave birth to a son, Peregrine, aboard the Mayflower (imagine that!) .. He was the first English child born in New England. . In mid-December, the explorers went ashore at a location across Cape Cod Bay where they found cleared fields and plentiful running water and named the site Plymouth. . The expedition returned to Provincetown, and on December 21 the Mayflower came to anchor in Plymouth harbor. Just after Christmas, the pilgrims began work on dwellings that would shelter them through their difficult first winter in America. . In the first year of settlement, half the colonists died of disease. In 1621, the health and economic condition of the colonists improved, and that autumn Governor William Bradford invited neighboring Indians to Plymouth to celebrate the bounty of that year’s harvest season. PROCRASTINATION OUT OF FEAR: Perhaps you see a post of an artist but you don’t see the struggle that is behind. JAMES IVESON PAINTING September 1 through October 15, 2020 Questions from Daisy Sheff August 2020 In our Graphite Journal chat, you said you were interested in “families.” Does having a daughter change your practice/subject matter? Is that sweet Norma in Drink? Yes, thats Norma in Drink. She was holding a cup whilst watching a tv show and she let it balance on her nose. This gave me enough time to draw her. I never set out to make a drawing. I draw when there’s time to draw, when everyone is preoccupied, when I’m not needed for anything. The drawings I get most attached to and take to the studio seem to happen when I feel fortunate and quite literally happy. Although the faces aren’t defined, I have the feeling that these are of specific individuals/actual events--- is this true? The paintings are very accurate to me in their description. I think the definition of a person comes from their whole body, not their face. I think likeness begins with posture, which is formed out of personal gestures––how a person sits on a chair, the shape of their elbow or shoulder in repose. They have such specificity while relying on color blocks- could be called “abstraction.” Yes, the paintings have ended up here. I am sensitive to what can’t happen in terms of illusion and these color blocks are what get left. There are a lot of changes that take place in these paintings. A sort of timeline is evident in their textures, edges, and underpainting. The process is technically illogical in terms of the craft of painting. They are quite clumsy. PLATFORM PROJECTS! 💥💥 In the gallery! 🔥🔥🔥 ELAINE K. Ng Object Calendar, Taiwan (2017-2018) inkjet prints (photos 1-5) This series began while I was living in Taiwan exploring ideas about how we assign meanings to objects and places, and how personal microhistories mesh with collective knowledge. As I walked around, I collected stones, plant materials, receipts, and the like – small tokens of my experiences, not unlike the plastic souvenirs people buy to remember special trips. I arranged my gatherings and photographed them, ultimately disposing of the actual items. These images record a personal experience of place and time, with memories assigned to objects that otherwise have no relevance, and meaning created in the visual language of their arrangements. Elaine K. Ng is an artist whose practice uses material investigation, writing, and research to examine our relationships to place. She exhibits internationally, and has lectured and held visiting positions at NSCAD University, Tainan National University of the Arts, and the China Academy of Art. In 2017-18, she was awarded a U.S. Fulbright Fellowship for research in Taiwan and has been a resident at the Djerassi Resident Artist Program and fellow at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library. P R O C E S S • I shared a bit of the making process for this big bowl yesterday via my story. The foot, the bowl and the ovals are all cast separately and attached after trimming. There are many steps to this process that require a slower pace of making. Little details that are as important as the piece itself. Taking my time with each and every one of them. . .
