Today is #WorldHumanitarianDay, a chance for us to celebrate all the #RealLifeHeroes who continue to support and protect people in need. It is also a day to honour those who have been killed in this pursuit, and those who continue to risk their lives to make the world a better place. In Australia, our year began with the #BlackSummer fires that had a devastating effect on people and their communities. In true Aussie spirit, volunteers and first responders immediately jumped into action to help one another. From the incredible firefighters who risked (and in some cases, lost) their lives fighting the blazes, through to the teams of volunteers who mobilised to help communities recover, we express our deep gratitude to these real-life heroes. This World Humanitarian Day, and every day, we pay tribute to aid workers and first responders around the world. 👼 my dad, Lieutenant John McCole Junior wrote a book about 9/11 called The Second Tower is Down 👨🏻🚒 along with his 20+ years in the FDNY, he was a multi-faceted being who loved to help people in need, build things for people, and I like to think he searched for the beauty in the hard moments his entire life 💎 yesterday was the anniversary of his passing, he left the earth plane 2 years ago and this week has been particularly sad for me 💔 we have to look out for each other. we have to care about each other. we have to live our lives holding the value of our neighbors at the forefront of our actions. On this day 19 years ago, 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their flights. 2606 went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift. It was their last night with their loved ones. None of them would return home on September 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same, so live and enjoy the breaths you take today. San Francisco to Resume Outdoor Personal Services Starting September 1 Haircuts, barber services, massages, and nail services are among personal services that can resume operating outdoors. San Francisco, CA — Mayor London N. Breed and Dr. Grant Colfax, Director of Public Health, today announced that outdoor personal services will resume in San Francisco, effective Tuesday, September 1, 2020. Outdoor gyms and fitness centers can reopen starting September 9, 2020. Additionally, the Mayor and Dr. Colfax announced that once San Francisco is removed from the State’s watch list, the City’s top priorities for reopening will be the gradual opening of classrooms, services that support the development of children, and other activities that can occur outdoors. Outdoor personal services that can operate include haircuts, barber services, massages and nail services. Only those services where both clients and providers can be masked at all times are allowed to resume. The City has posted information and guidance in multiple languages for businesses and is conducting outreach to personal services businesses to ensure they have access to the guidance and are able to prepare accordingly. It’s September 11th. I will never forget that morning 19 yrs ago. We lived 4 blocks away from the World Trade Center. That sound we heard and our building shaking. We ran from that building after the 1st tower fell. I was 7 months pregnant. As we ran up 6 th Ave carrying our dog we watched the 2nd tower fall. My husband said “Nothing will ever be the same again” and he was right. May we never forget this day, and please say a prayer for all those who lost their lives that day. I cannot believe it’s been 19 years since 9/11. What a memorable day for all the wrong reasons. Like so many people that day in NYC, I left for work before the first plane struck. I lived in Kingsbridge (Bronx) and worked in Brooklyn at the time. On typical day, It would take me 1 1/2 hours to get to work. I would take the number 1 or 9 train to 14th Street and transfer to the F train to Dumbo to @fatbeats When I finally transferred to the F train, the train conductor announced that there are no more trains running in NYC. Keep in mind, I still have no idea the Towers have been struck! Also I had never heard this before. So like everyone I went upstairs to call my office to say I’m going to be late but when I got upstairs not only could I not get through to my office but I also had never seen so many people on the street in NYC. I am still not knowing or aware of what was happening. I was just concerned about getting to work on time. Then I saw a line for a pay phone and stood in it. However, I heard the most horrific scream ever from 6th Ave (I was on 14th), and I went to see what it was. I just happen to look up and literally saw the second Tower fall. Obviously, I was beyond freaked out and still not knowing what was going on!. People all around me were losing their minds! It was straight chaos. Once I collected myself together, I went and sat on someone’s stoop. I was literally talking to myself and trying to figure out what to do! After pulling it together I walked.up the block. It was one of those crisp early NYC fall days when you feel like you can conquer the world. I woke up, got on the subway with my iced coffee, and went to my new job at Ogilvy and Mather advertising agency in midtown. We were in our morning status and out of nowhere this women started screaming in the hallway that one of the “twin” towers was hit and that her husband was in the building. My boss turned on the TV in the conference room and then we watched the second tower go up in smoke. It was so surreal. I had been in NYC for two months. I didn’t know how to feel. I was so scared and confused. We were all dismissed and I walked home along the crowded streets of people in panic. Luckily I had a strong network of friends from college and highschool to lean on. We banded together, did what we could to help, and held each other tight as we watched the endless news of this devastation. I ended up living in New York for the next 13 years. I watched as we re-built our city and faith in humanity. New York always seems to always get hit the worst. Probably because it’s the most resilient city in the world- filled with people who live there because they want to be there. People who live in NYC are survivors, whether it be terrorist attacks, hurricanes, blackouts, shady politicians, or pandemics, there is nothing that can break the core of this special place. This post isn’t about beer, it isn’t about gaining followers, it isn’t about comments, it isn’t about us. This post is about the 3,000 people that lost their lives this very morning 19 years ago! Regular people just like you and I heading into work, getting on an early morning flight. Some of those regular people became modern day heroes. FDNY, NYPD, first responders, the passengers on flight 93 that stood up and tried to take the flight back over. This post is about all of them. Today we honor them. I remember exactly where I was on this day. Gathered around a 12” black and white TV in a truck service bay in CT, and watched live as the second plane flew into the tower, feeling helpless, feeling angry, feeling scared. Getting the phone call that my mother in law wasn’t on the plane from Philadelphia to LA, and that she was safe. America rallied around our first responders with an outpouring of well deserved gratitude for the sacrifices they made to put the lives of others before their own. For nineteen years, on this day, we’ve said “never forget.” And today, WE HAVE FORGOTTEN. We demonize the very organizations who put the lives of others before their own. We insult them, we disrespect them, we provoke them. We make them our enemy. Why? Because we’ve allowed the actions of a few to control our feelings about the many. America: GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER. On this day, 19yrs ago, evil put its best foot forward and took the initiative. Also on this day, was the rebirth of a nation and call to action for the American people to become one, regardless of race, gender or political preference. Regardless who orchestrated the catastrophic and devastating events of 9/11, innocent people died, their loved ones emotionally destroyed and good men and women were deployed and permitted to do violence on your behalf while you slept peacefully at night. As the buildings fell, many stood up ready to take ownership for the delivery of direct and lethal retaliation and many more ready to rebuild and secure the nation. Those warriors who never made it home, they made the ultimate sacrifice for a collective cause much greater than they as individuals. Unfortunately, contributing to the overall loss of life. And those who did return home safely, carrying the burden and mental scars of war. Never to be the same. As a kid I used to ride my bike to the top of the Tourne Park in northern NJ where you could get a glimpse of the twin towers. It was a different type of beauty than I get now in the Wasatch, but it was beautiful and majestic nonetheless. 19 years ago that skyline was forever changed. Today I will remember all of the first responders running IN to save lives as others were running FOR their lives. Today, Friday, marks the 19th anniversary of the most horrific terrorist attack on American soil. On that September morning, 2,996 people lost their lives and more than 6,000 were injured. A day that dawned with crisp, clear blue skies quickly became filled with unimaginable tragedy. It showed us the worst in humankind. Had we not, at that time, evolved beyond using people and planes as bombs? It also showed us the best of human nature as strangers helped one another as much as possible seek safety and shelter. In Greenwich that Tuesday morning, it was quiet after the attacks. With so many neighbors and friends working in New York City, we were transfixed before our television screens, watching the events unfold. Traffic into the City was non-existent. The normal noise from I-95 was replaced with a steady stream of sirens and military helicopters headed in the direction of city. Thirty-four people with ties to Greenwich died that day. Thirty-four people did not return to their loved ones. Wives lost husbands, mothers lost sons, sisters’ brothers, sons’ fathers and fathers lost daughters. Their losses cannot be replaced; they left our entire community mourning and grasping to comprehend the enormity of what happened. We need to do more than “not forget.” We need to teach. Four years ago, a radio station in Oklahoma posted on social media that this is the first year that middle school students in their schools are learning about September 11 as an historical event. As a New Yorker this time of year is always so emotional. We grew up living in the suburbs just north of the city. Almost all of our friends parents were commuters to the city. I was 17 (a college freshman), I hadnt gone to my first class for the day yet. My mom called me & said, Put on the tv! The World Trade Center just got hit by a plane. As shes scrambling & talking to her co-workers, my eyes were glued to the TV. The broadcaster holding the microphone looked up, looked back at the camera, screamed another plane just hit the second tower & they ran. I spoke softly in disbelief, Mom... another plane just hit.. She took a gasp for air & said something I have never until that momment heard before, We are under attack! The upcoming hours, days and weeks had brought New Yorkers together in a way we had never seen before. Locally, we had no phone coverage for what felt like forever to find out if our family & friends were ok, all of the lines wouldnt dial out. We watched on the news as people walked home over the Brooklyn Bridge. We prayed as we didnt hear from them & drove to be with out loved ones. Even if we didnt have a loved one lost, we sobbed thinking about those we did. We were there for eachother, we helped one another, we loved each person for who they were. We saw human kind for what it was. A time where we were united no matter our race, religion, class or political views. United we stand always ❤. Never forget where NY tough originated from😔. I remember going to the dentist and playing outside on the little train wondering why my mom seemed distracted and asking her why there was smoke in the sky. I remember going home and learning building in NYC were hit, being sent away from the TV when I saw someone jump out of the building. I remember my big sister had to get picked up in person from school cause so many of her peers would not have parents. I remember the release for my mom when she learned my dads meeting had been moved from the World Trade Center to uptown the day before. That he was safe just wouldn’t make it out of the city for days. I have these memories still in my mind from 19 years ago. It’s crazy to think of how much has happened now my life and the fact I still clearly remember lots of little snippets from that day. I honor and commemorate our friends parents who never came home after that day. Never forget & pay tribute. In our hearts rests the victims of 9/11, the heroes who risked their lives to save others and the families whom forever lost their loved ones. On 9/11 - I was in fourth grade eating breakfast before school when the first plane hit the first tower. My mother watched in horror and was screaming at our little television. My father was flying to Boston at the time of the attack. With no cell phones (and particularly no service after this occurrence) nor any WiFi my mom couldn’t get in contact with my dad. For hours she panicked wondering if he was safe & also was heartbroken while watching thousands of people suffer. As a child I just couldn’t understand this event. I believed it was just an accident... In 2018 I visited #nyc and went to the @911memorial it truly was one of the most incredibly put together museums I have seen - the feeling I had as I walked through reading, watching, and listening to the panic & pain our country experienced could only be transferred. Now more than ever we need to come together and fuel peace. I can only hope and also act towards this. It’s 4 am on September 11th and as I sit in a fire engine on a Wildland fire in Southern California looking for hot spots I think of the phrase “never forget”. 19 years ago on September 11th I was studying to become a paramedic and didn’t realize my path was leading me to become a firefighter. After that day it was clear to me that the war I knew of good vs evil from back home was now here in the USA. You see as a young Jewish kid I was very familiar with the phrase “never forget” my family was nearly completely exterminated by the nazis and if it wasn’t for my grandmother being the sole survivor of her family my whole family wouldn’t be here today. It’s because of this I don’t take the term never forget lightly. So to my fellow first responders and country: May we never forget the tremendous loss of first responders and civilians that day. May we never forget the families they left behind. May we never forget that we must constantly train to be ready for the next challenge. May we never forget that evil still exists and wants to harm us. May we never forget that as first responders this job has never been about us, but about serving others. May we never forget that it doesn’t matter how good the technology and equipment we have, it still boils down to us being able to make critical decisions under stress. May we never forget the traditions of our brotherhood. May we never forget why we signed up to do this job. May we never forget the sacrifices of those that came before us and may we never forget how united we were and can still be like on September 12th 2001 when we lifted each other and got back up as a united country. On this day 19 years ago this country dropped to its knees. Shortly thereafter we all became united.
